Delving Deeper: Ch7, Space Food
Before reading and watching about space food, I have not thought about how
eating on the space station might be; I usually think about how being as a militarily
person and the way they get nutrients dense food. I was confused a bit when in one of the
videos stated that they get fresh fruits and vegetables about every two weeks, but I did
not know before that getting to the space station takes about two days.
One of my family member bought a freeze drying machine since she is a worker
to freeze dry food for her children for school to assure that they get the nutrients they
need instead of buying fast food, and it was so interesting to me when reading that freeze
drying was a way to preserve food for astronauts. Freeze-drying is one of the process for
food preservation that increase food shelf life, but it is different than traditional drying
because it uses low temperature to minimize nutrients loss, and I was thinking since
astronaut do punch of researches, they need to have more nutrients. Moreover, being in
the space might affect the food because there is radiation that could break down nutrients
and could be tasteless. I was wondering how when adding water to the freeze dried food
will stick to the food since the less gravity make water float, but I was thinking that when
adding the water and putting the food in a forced-air convection with the heat the water
stick to the food particles.
Food in the international space station are precooked or some are fresh, but they
all come in disposable packages to be easily and flexibly used by astronauts. Another
thing they can have variety of food selection like seafood, chicken, beef, nuts; also, they
got liquids like juices, coffee and tea. They can warm up food if they need as well.
Eating on space seems to be way different that eating on earth. For example, they
can have sauces for their food, but they cannot have pepper and salt because they can
make a clog on the air bents and also, they might get into an astronaut’s eyes. Relating to
the way astronauts get some fresh food like fruits and vegetables, they use decentralized
meal assembly where they got delivers from the earth, and those vegetables and fruits has
been delivered in the appropriate temperatures and packed in little disposable bags to
avoid faster spoilage.
