Assessing the Sample Self-Introduction Speech - Business Finance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH1G_2tvR0YAfter viewing the sample speech above (youtube link above), and after thinking about all of the factors outlined for the assignment, please do the following:1. Complete ONE POST that comments in full, detailed, insightful, original form and style on TWO issues identified below. Please note that you do not have to address all areas of the letter you choose. For example, if you choose a and d, below, you can then select one issue WITHIN the a area and one issue WITHIN the d area to address. This way we leave things for others to add as well.a. The speakers INTRODUCTION: mention/discuss quality of attention getter, credibility building, preview/thesis statement, main ideas as previewed in the intro, OR overall quality of delivery.b. The speakers ORGANIZATION OF THE SPEECHS BODY AROUND THREE MAIN POINTS: Does she do this? What are her main ideas? Are they presented in an equal manner, or does one outweigh the other? Are they diverse? Are they equally detailed and balanced? Does she include narrative examples in an effective, compelling way? What are they and how do they help her? What other devices, details, transitional moves, or support does she integrate that help make her speech stronger and more listenable?c. The speakers CONCLUSION: Is it effective? How? Why? Is her recap strong and clear? Is her close memorable? Does she leave us with something striking, a bang of a thought to keep us engaged in her message even after shes done? Does she extend her message beyond the life and times of her speech? Does she touch her audience emotionally? Explain and give evidence to support your choice.d. The speakers DELIVERY: Does she alter her voice to enhance interest? Does she control her voice? Does she over-control her voice? Are there any distracting fillers or other devices present (like um or uh or so or like)? Does she control her gestures? Does she pause too much or leave the flow of her presentation seeming interrupted or artificial? Does she, most importantly, speak NATURALLY as she would speak in a normal conversation? This is what were aiming for, so be sure you know the difference between extemporaneous/conversational style of delivery v. manuscript or memorized (neither of which is permitted for a passing speech grade). Explain and give evidence of your choice.e. What about this speakers presentation and delivery would you most like to emulate? Why? Explain why you consider this a strength in her presentation.f. What about this speakers presentation should she consider honing (or reconsider altogether) if she were to repeat the speech (or to plan and deliver her next speech)? Why do you feel this way? Be specific and use evidence to support your response.

Speech of Self-Introduction: Requirements and Guidelines

100 points possible
PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES:
a. To give a brief speech to introduce yourself to your classmates
b. To practice organizing ideas and speaking in public.
c. To give a speech and use it as a benchmark for future improvement.
d. To participate as speaker, listener, evaluator in team member presentation experience
e. To hone related communication and collaboration skills
TOPIC, CONTENT, STRUCTURE: This is a speech about you! BUT, be certain to view
and read all materials in the Reading and Viewing Materials BEFORE you even begin to
think about planning and delivering your speech. You know yourself, Im sure, but there is a
designated manner in which to present that self to your audience members and earn the most
points for doing so! In this course and this speech, just as within any communication context,
your audience matters, too! We will learn how to organize and include content for our speeches
designed specifically to engage the attention of our audience members while simultaneously
presenting information we feel passionate about.
•
•
•
•
To come up with ideas for your speech, brainstorm a list of details about yourself that
will interest us.
Design a theme or central idea to use as a focus and pick out THREE ideas related to
that theme. For example, what are the most important things or people in your life?
How have they impacted your life, your decision to study, your goals? Have you
traveled, or have you any hobbies or special interests? What can you tell us about
yourself that will give us greater understanding of who you are?
Tie THREE main ideas all together under a theme. It will be much easier if you can
think of a theme, such as travel, family, hobby, career, dreams, etc., and stay focused on
it. Concentrate on THREE main points about yourself and develop them with stories,
explanations, and details. Its more interesting to hear a speech about a few ideas that are
well developed than to hear a long list of detached details.
SO...DO NOT SIMPLY INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND THEN GIVE AN
EXHAUSTIVE LISTING OF THINGS ABOUT YOU! THIS WILL NOT FULFILL
THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS SPEECH ASSIGNMENT OR FOR THIS
COURSE; HENCE, THIS WILL NOT EARN A PASSING GRADE FOR SPEECH 1!
ORGANIZATION: Organize your speech into three sections: Introduction, Body, and
Conclusion. Avoid reading a list of things about you; that’s not the mission and consequently
will not earn a passing grade.
The Introduction must include AN ATTENTION-GETTER, orienting material to move your
audience from the attention-grabbing device to the thesis, and a LIST THESIS that clearly
previews all three main ideas to come in the body of the speech.
Know your intro material/ideas and deliver it powerfully by not looking at your notecards
and instead looking directly at your audience members and the webcam (also a member
of your audience, right?).
Tell us your name somewhere in the introduction of the speech, but dont just say it and
then start speaking; incorporate your name in some clever, meaningful way related to
your established theme.
Have a specific focus and end with a thesis that tells us what you will cover in your
speech and what your theme is. You must also end the introduction with a preview of
your three main points. Here is an example of an introduction for the sample outline
below.
Sunrises and sunsets with my feet in the sand! After moving to Florida from Pittsburgh,
PA...I found a love for 3 new hobbies. I am here today to tell you about my life in the
Florida sunshine...building sand castles, boating, and volunteering my time at beach
clean-ups!
The Body of the Speech must be organized around THREE main ideas, ideas that are
connected in some way and work together to demonstrate your overriding theme.
Use the main ideas and related key words to name the main parts of the body of the
speech. Each main idea should be presented in its own body paragraph, and each body
paragraph should be developed and presented equally as much as the other two.
Use transitional devices and signposts to introduce and summarize big ideas you plan to
make and have just finished making. This is very important in the public communication
environment. It helps us as listeners follow and know what to expect.
Use at least ONE narrative device: Audiences want to hear stories, explanations,
descriptions, and what these things mean to the speaker. The shopping list of information
will not allow you to connect with your audience. Tells stories about sand castle
competitions and boating excursions...and explanations of the reward in volunteering
The Conclusion of your speech should summarize ARTFULLY and originally, the points made
in the body of your speech. Ideally, you remind listeners of your overall purpose, and you lead
them out of your speech with something interesting, striking, and thoughtful to think about
afterward. The final words of your speech are like a “punch” to the thoughts of your listeners –
or at least they should be. You want to hit listeners with something that will strike them
mentally and leave them considering your message long after you’ve finished speaking.
You want it to be clear that you are moving to the closing of your speech. That said, be
sure you avoid saying, “That’s all.” or “That’s it.” Don’t end with “Thank you.” You
might want to end by saying: “In closing, Ive enjoyed sharing these memories and ideas
with you and look forward to getting to know the rest of you,” or something like that.
Much better, right? Want to do something even better than that? End by going back to
your thesis and theme. This is an awesome, very effective, and well-liked strategy! The
best closings reach back to the introduction in some way, review the main points
mentioned in the speech (without just repeating them verbatim), and leave the audience
with a punch of some sort (something interesting, surprising, memorable related to your
message).
Essentially, you want to o out with glory! Leave the audience with that mental “punch”
(see above :)!
STYLE AND DELIVERY:
• Do not write an essay and DO NOT read or memorize your plan as a speech. None of the
speeches in this course are “Manuscript-type” speeches. You must give extemporaneous
speeches to pass the course! What does this mean? This means you must plan, rehearse,
and deliver spontaneously and with a conversational style.
• Your goal is to deliver your message in a conversational style while looking at the
camera. Show some enthusiasm—remember to focus on the message not on yourself to
lessen your anxiety. No one else knows what you will say, so if you forget something or
goof up in any way, we probably won’t know it! You may glance at the note card as you
speak, but you must only have key points on your notecard, not sentences AT ALL. You
want to look at your audience most of the time with brief looks at your notecard at least
distracting times and ways. You do not want to do the opposite, which is to look at your
notecard most of the time and look at your audience briefly.
• Practice out loud in front of the webcam. Remember that an oral presentation is quite
different from a composition. Your delivery of the ideas needs to be polished enough so
that it doesn’t sound like a written report.
• Speak from key words on one note card: Do not use a notebook or a sheet of paper and
avoid writing a composition or manuscript. Show your card to the camera/audience
before you begin your speech. If you sound as if you include sentences rather than key
points on your notecards, if you are reading or seem as if you are reading based on
tone/eye contact/limited conversational quality required to connect with your audience,
your grade will be reduced to less than passing.
AUDIENCE: You must gather a live, 8-member, adult AUDIENCE and present this speech
TO THIS LIVE AUDIENCE. Because our class must simulate and meet the same
requirements as a seated version of this course, only by giving your speech in front of a collegeaged audience aware of and willing to evaluate you relative to designated, understood precepts
of our speaking assignment will you gain the experience required to pass a college-level public
speaking course. THE LIVE AUDIENCE IS REQUIRED FOR SPEECH 1, so any Speech
1 not delivered with/to this audience on the assigned/agreed upon date and time will not earn a
grade.
TIME: 2.5 to 3 minutes. Your grade will be affected if you go over or under by 30 seconds.
Time your practice runs and be sure they consistently fall within the 3 minute requirement.
Speeches falling more than 30 seconds short or going over 30 seconds longer than required will
not earn passing grades. Please note that the time requirement ONLY INCLUDES THE
SPEECH ITSELF, not the audience count, notecard display, set up, or the related critique after
you speak.
OPTIONS: Visual aids or props and quotation integration are optional for Speech 1
ASSESSMENT: 100 points possible for Speech 1, not including planning, quizzes, outline,
team efforts, and team reports.
PROOF OF AUDIENCE, RECORDING, AND SUBMISSION PROCEDURES
Record your speech using webcam, microphone, live audience, and established
Youtube.com account as prescribed in our syllabus, but be sure to follow these things to
show that your audience is present!
First step: Prepare your webcam and headset as you did for the previous equipment test.
2. Be sure your camera focuses on you but sits as if it is one member of your overall
audience (it watches you from the same perspective your audience does, in other words).
3. When all equipment is ready, immediately scan/do the following in this order:
a. Your notecard so I can see it, the words on it, the number of words on it, etc. (You may
use ONE card with KEY WORDS on it, not with sentences or the full speech, as this counts
as a composition or manuscript style of speech and leads you away from the required
delivery style for this class.
b. Next, scan the audience members slowly, counting them off one through eight so that I
can see all members present for your speech. If you move too quickly, and I can’t make out
all members, you do not get credit for the audience accordingly (and hence do not pass the
speech).
c. Position your camera as a member of the audience. You must speak to the camera but
also to your audience. Speeches that have you speaking to the camera while speaking away
from the audience don’t really count as public speeches, since they neglect one of the most
critical elements of the public speaking environment: audience needs. You MUST speak to
both audiences: Your live audience and the camera. I also need to see your entire body, not
just your head.

Do not include the audience count or notecard display in the time requirement for your
speech. Only actual speaking time for the speech counts toward the time requirement.
Have an audience member time your speech for you. Agree in advance what signals
he/she will use to communicate (silently) that you have reached the two minute mark,
then the three minute mark, etc.
Begin speaking. After you have completed your speaking presentation, include any other
requirements for the particular speech (e.g., evaluation session or critique, if applicable).
When finished speaking, review your presentation. If you are satisfied with it, and it is a
complete recording, copy and paste the Youtube.com link into the dropbox for Speech 1
Recording. And you are done! Congrats!!!
P.S. Pretty please don’t wait until Sunday late to get this situated and submitted. Always
plan for advance submission so you don’t end up without an audience or end up in a bad
technical situation that prevents you from performing and submitting the speech on time.
