PSYC 1200, Spring 2020
Assignment # 1
Due date: Friday, May 29th before 11:59 pm AST via Brightspace Dropbox
Goals for Assignment # 1
1) expose you to a scientific article in psychology that you will hopefully enjoy and understand
2) expose you to library resources so you become familiar with how to search for journal articles
3) gain some academic writing experience to sharpen your written communication skills
4) familiarize you with how to submit assignments in Brightspace
Task: find and read a psychology journal article and then complete a writing assignment stemming from the
article you chose (details below). Each student must choose a different article from one of these 4 journals
(only) published in or after 2015:
•
•
•
•
Canadian Psychology
American Psychologist
Perspectives on Psychological Science
Psychological Science in the Public Interest.
You will need your S # and password to access these journals via the SMU Patrick Power Library
(https://smu.ca/academics/the-patrick-power-library.html). An off-campus login page will appear on your
screen when you try to access a database or journal content; enter your S# and password. If you need help
updating your library record, contact Access Services (access@smu.ca). Notice that I’ve provided you with a
companion handout prepared by expert librarian, Dr. Heather Sanderson (see attached) that is designed to help
you find an acceptable article.
Take some time to look through these journals and choose an article that interests you (see handout on how to
find these journal articles). You can see which articles have been “taken” by other students on the assignment
tab in Brightspace (this list will be updated regularly). Choose an article that is not in that list. Once you have
chosen the article, send an email to the Teaching Assistant (TA) for this class, Ms. Dufour
(gena.dufour@smu.ca). In the subject line please write “Psyc 1200”. Then tell her which article you plan to use
for your assignment. Copy/paste the title and author of your article in the email. Ms. Dufour will verify your
article and, if no other student has selected it, it’s yours and you can start! Save your article as a pdf file (you
will need to submit it along with your assignment).
The actual writing: Please write a 4-5 page paper (see format details below) that describes the main ideas of
the article. Be sure you include a section that describes what you learned that you did not know, what surprised
you, and how this article connects or relates to some aspect of your life or that of someone you know. You can
use hypothetical situations (e.g., if I had no toes…).
Format for assignment paper must be typed neatly and contain no misspelled words, typos, or grammatical
errors. Assignments must be double-spaced (no extra spaces/lines between paragraphs) using 1 margins, use
New Times Roman font (12 cpi). Number the pages on the top right please. Start on Page 1 – no need for a title
page. Be sure your name, date, and the title of the assignment are on your work. If your assignment is shorter
than 4 entire pages, it is too short, and points will be deducted).
Submitting your assignment: Submit your assignment (saved as a pdf file or MS word file – only) and your
article (saved as a pdf file) using the Dropbox tab within Brightspace.
Note: It will take time to do the assignment. Set aside sufficient time to look through articles and choose one
that you find interesting (and check to make sure it’s available because each student must choose a different
article). Read the article carefully. Most students will need to read it 2-3 times (or more) – it’s totally normal!
You may wish to print it so that you can jot your thoughts/reactions in the margins.
Be sure you read the companion handout “How to find and access your article” that will show you how to find
articles in these 4 journals. Be sure you follow the instructions.
When you write your paper, be sure you do not copy/paste any content from the article into your paper. You
must use your own words. Avoid direct quotes (no more than 2). You must paraphrase instead, which means put
the material in your own words with proper attribution. Do not copy/paste from your source – that’s plagiarism.
Finally, Assignment # 2 is linked to this assignment, so do your best work here! :)
Assignment marking rubric: (Total: 12 points)
Solid description of the article. Tell me what are the main points of the article. What
research findings did the article describe? How was the research conducted?
3
A few paragraphs describing what you learned and/or what surprised you.
3
A few paragraphs that link the article findings or main points with your life
3
Format
3
Deductions: Points will be deducted for failure to use an article from one of the 4 journals (-3 points), failure
to attach the article as a pdf file article (-3 points), violations in format.
Violations of regulations on academic integrity will be reported to the Academic Integrity Officer.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions! I am here for you!
I hope you find the assignment interesting and thought provoking!
Do your best and have fun!

JOURNALS YOU CAN USE FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT
• Canadian Psychology
• American Psychologist
• Perspectives on Psychological Science
• Psychological Science in the Public Interest
FINDING ARTICLES IN SPECIFIC JOURNALS
• You can find articles via searching the catalogue or by searching in a database
• The catalogue will retrieve articles that may not be relevant to your subject
• A database like PsycInfo (for psychology) will retrieve articles from many different journals in a
broad subject area
• Another way to find articles is to search or browse in an individual journal
• This is useful when you know which journals are good
• This method will work well for your assignment
• Begin at the library home page and go to Journals A to Z
Journal #1:
Canadian Psychology

TIPS FOR CHOOSING A GOOD ARTICLE
• Pick a topic that interests you
• Be a bit flexible: if you don’t find anything, maybe you are being too specific
• Try browsing a few issues to see what topics that journal has published
• You shouldn’t just take the first article you find
• Not everything published in a journal is an article
• You can also find: book reviews, editorials, obituaries, and more
• Look closely at your results to choose one
• Ask your professor/TA if your choice is acceptable for the assignment
• Have a backup in case your first choice isn’t acceptable
APA CITATION GUIDES
• APA guides from the Library and the Writing
Centre are available on the Library’s Website and
on the Psychology Subject Guide
• Many databases will also generate citations for
search results.
• Remember to check for errors! They are common
in citation generators
GETTING HELP
