CHM 2220/2225 Mission Statement: Organic Chemistry focuses on the completion of topics in the study
of organic chemistry. The course will provide you with intermediate and advanced study skills needed for
mastering organic chemistry. This course will follow a mechanistic approach. Reaction trends and
patterns will be emphasized. Skills learned here will sharpen your problem solving abilities.
Note: CHM 2225 is 3 credits and is identical in content to CHM 2220 but does not include a scheduled
discussion section.
Enrollment: Organic Chemistry (CHM 2220) is a FOUR-credit course, which serves as the completion to
the two-semester sequence of Organic Chemistry for engineers, science majors and pre-professional
programs. The actual number of credits earned should not determine your effort or the time spent on this
course. In order to enroll in CHM 2220, you must have as a prerequisite or co-requisite, CHM 2230, the
Organic Chemistry II Laboratory. If you wish to take the lab in the Fall, we can help you get the
prerequisite waived for now. You must have successfully completed CHM 1240 and CHM 1250 with the
grade of C- or better. It is not wise to take CHM 1240 and CHM 2220 at the same time.

Student Outcomes: Consider each of these outcomes in terms of your understanding and abilities in
Organic Chemistry as they are now at the start of this course. Consider these outcomes periodically
throughout the semester. For each new reaction you learn, you should be able to write the product of the
reaction, say what the reagents are for the conversion of starting material to product, and suggest a starting
material. You will learn to write mechanisms for many of the reactions covered by showing bond
breaking, bond making and all electron movement with correct curved arrow depiction.
As a result of your studies in Chemistry 2220, you will demonstrate:
---an understanding of reactions using organometallic reagents;
---an understanding of reactions of aldehydes and ketones;
---an understanding of reactions involving carboxylic acids;
---an understanding of reactions of derivatives of carboxylic acids;
---an understanding of reactions of enolate anions and enamines;
---an understanding of dienes and the conjugated system;
4/30/20
---an understanding of benzene and aromaticity;
---an understanding of reactions of benzene and its derivatives;
---an understanding of reactions of amines;
---an understanding of polymer chemistry;
---an understanding of bioorganic compounds; carbohydrates and amino acids;
---an understanding of multi-step synthesis and other advanced topics in organic chemistry.
Faculty Goals: The instructor will provide a learning environment such that students can meet the above
outcomes. A variety of instruction techniques and assessment activities will be utilized to help you meet
your potential in this class. The instructor intends for you to finish this class with a new skill level in
which to succeed in future chemistry or biology courses. Skills learned in this class will be useful in
taking the MCAT’s. Finally, the instructor respects your decision to study fields other than chemistry but
encourages you to develop your interest in science.
The secret to success in Organic Chemistry: Organic chemistry is best learned by daily practice. Just as
you would learn to excel in video games by repeated playing so too can you become an expert at organic
chemistry by DAILY practice or repeated playing.
HELP: There are several types of class help available for you. Make note of the instructors office
hours and use them. Also, if you wait until July to decide that you need help in this class, it will be
too late! At the first sign of trouble--GET HELP!

Academic Integrity: All forms of academic dishonesty are forbidden in this class. Examples of academic
dishonesty include all variations of cheating during exams as well as changing test answers for re-grading.
Submitting late exams will result in the grade of zero for that exam. All forms of academic dishonesty will
be prosecuted to the fullest extent as outlined in the Student Due Process Policy of the University.
At many universities, including WSU, students are asking the Chegg experts to solve their exam questions
while the exam is ongoing. Not only is this a violation of Chegg’s policy, it is a violation of Wayne State’s
Student Code of Conduct. In Winter 2020, there was an extensive Chegg investigation into cheating and
many students were downgraded for violations. Your instructor has a Chegg account and will monitor
exam questions. Chegg provides names of students who ask for exam answers.
Excerpts from the Universitys Student Due Process Policy regarding disruptive behavior are outlined
below. This policy will be enforced during all academic activities relating to CHM 2220 especially
lecture and quiz classes. A student who is being disruptive in quiz class will lose 10 points per
occurrence from their total score. A student who is disruptive during lecture runs the risk of losing one
exam score. Repeat offenders will have their course grade down-graded and if necessary, they will
receive an F for the course. Lastly, a student may be brought before the Dean of his or her College for
further action. Please show respect to your classmates and instructors.

PRELIMINARY PROCEDURE
10.1
When a faculty member is persuaded that academic dishonesty has occurred, the faculty member may,
without using the mechanism of filing a charge, adjust the grade downward (including downgrading to a failing
grade) for the test, paper, or other course-related activity in question, or for the entire course.
Each exam will have the following Academic Integrity Pledge. Be sure that you understand it.
Academic Integrity Pledge
During the exam I will not:
Use textbook resources
Use nootbook resources
Use the help of other students
Use the help of the Internet
Use other published or non-published resources

you will be assigned the grade you have earned according to the published point distribution.
Special Needs: If you have a documented disability that requires accommodations, you will need to
register with Student Disability Services (SDS) for coordination of your academic accommodations. The
Student Disability Services (SDS) office is located at 1600 David Adamany Undergraduate Library in the
Student Academic Success Services department. SDS telephone number is 313-577-1851 or 313-577-3365
(TDD only). Once you have your accommodations in place, I will be glad to meet with you privately to
discuss your special needs. Student Disability Services mission is to assist the university in creating an
accessible community where students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to fully participate in
their educational experience at Wayne State University.
Please be aware that a delay in getting SDS accommodation letters for the current semester may hinder the
4/30/20
availability or facilitation of those accommodations in a timely manner. Therefore, it is in your best
interest to get your accommodation letters as early in the semester as possible.
Religious Holidays (from the online Academic Calendar): Because of the extraordinary variety of
religious affiliations of the University student body and staff, the Academic Calendar makes no provisions
for religious holidays. However, it is University policy to respect the faith and religious obligations of the
individual. Students with classes or examinations that conflict with their religious observances are
expected to notify their instructors well in advance so that mutually agreeable alternatives may be worked
out.
