The course includes the theory and concepts of cost accounting, the use of financial and accounting information for planning, budgeting and control of operations, and methods and analyses to assist managerial accountants in decision-making activities. Course Objectives 1. The student will develop an understanding of the cost accounting process, including terminology and cost behavior patterns and apply them to job order and process costing systems. 2. The student will learn to effectively communicate with the controller and other management accountants, and to understand the basis at which cost information is collected and aggregated. 3. The student will evaluate the way cost information is estimated and analyzed in corporate planning and decision4. 5. making so as to prepare the student for a potential role in the essential corporate process that involves both managers and accountants. The student will demonstrate the use and development of accounting information in segment reporting and the control and performance evaluation process. Course Layout & Grading Discussion Board Quizzes Homework Exams Final 2-5 12-14 12-14 3 1 4\% 15\% 10\% 70\% (your best 3 scores are 21\% each and your lowest test score is 7\%) 1. 70\% of the student’s final grade will be determined by the results of four examinations (Exams & Final) to be conducted throughout the semester using MyAccountingLab . Your best 3 exams will be worth 21\% each (63\%) and your lowest test score will be only 7\%. Exams and your final exam are the same and it does not matter which the lowest score is scored on. The exams or the final will not be comprehensive. 2. An additional 15\% of the student’s grade will be determined by the results of quizzes that will be taken online through MyAccountingLab. Online quizzes must be taken by the stated time. Quizzes are taken by going to MyAccountingLab by logging in through CANVAS and consist of multiple choice questions and /or problems similar to the homework based on all material from the textbook chapter and will be timed. Once submitted the quiz may not be re-taken. Make sure you are aware of the due date and time. (I will drop your lowest quiz score). 3. An Additional 10\% of the student’s final grade will be based on HW problems assigned from the book that will be posted on MyAccountingLab. Make sure you are aware of the due date and time. You will be able to attempt the HW as many times before the due date. (I will drop your lowest HW score). 4. An Additional 4\% of the student’s final grade will be based on the discussion board questions posted on CANVAS. Make sure you are aware of the due date and time. I will announce them on CANVAS. 5. The remaining 1\% of the student’s final grade will be based on understanding and reading the syllabus. Grading: At the end of the semester, the instructor will apply those weighted percentages and calculate each students grade based on 100 points. MyAccountingLab: Is a separate website from CANVAS but you will gain access through CANVAS. It accompanies the textbook and the problems on MyAccountingLab correspond to the textbook. If you experience difficulty with the website try logging out and re-logging in. Make sure for the timed quizzes and exams you give yourself ample amount of time to sit down and complete the assignment. Once you begin a quiz or exam the clock will be ticking. You can still log out and log in but the timer does not stop. Be aware of your due dates and times. They will be strictly enforced. All your assignments (except discussion board) will be through MyAccountingLab. *** Please make sure you pay attention to Due Dates, especially the final. This may not follow the typical due date of the week of other exams or finals.*** Homework, quizzes and tests will be assigned on MyAccountingLab. When they are assigned they will show up on your MyAccountingLab website. Please keep track of the due dates. If you get a problem wrong or can’t figure out the solution, there are help buttons to aid in the solving of the problem. There is no time limit except the due date for homework. The problems for your homework will correspond with the textbook. Use the HW to help yourself prepare for the quizzes and tests. The more time you put in and try to master the material, the better you should score on the quizzes and tests. Quizzes – may be multiple choice, problems similar to your readings and homework or a combination of both. If the quiz is multiple choice there will be approximately 10 multiple-choice questions from the chapter. If it is not multiple choice it will be one or two problems that will require computations and/or journal entries that highlights the important concept(s) from the chapter. You will have 60 to 120 minutes to complete the quiz. Once the quiz is started the timer is running. Exams – there will be approximately 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 or 6 problems from the chapters covered. You will have 210 minutes to complete the exam. MyAccountingLab Grades: The grades you see on Pearsons MyAccountingLab are not exact. The major difference may be a missed assignment which will not be calculated into the grade until it is manually done through the system. Missed assignments are not initially calculated into the grade. You will need to calculate your course grade using the weights and grades from the syllabus. There are limitations in the grades on MyAccountingLab but it does offer a good idea of how you are doing. ***After each HW and Quiz, problems that you may have struggled with or did not get full credit for or even may have gotten wrong, will be used to update and find similar problems to put into a study plan that you may use to help practice more to improve your scores on exams. This study plan is NOT part of your grade and is NOT mandatory but useful and another helpful tool. CANVAS: Is a website that is provided through Cuyamaca College. CANVAS is mainly used for getting into MyAccountingLab (Pearson website that is accessed through CANVAS), announcements, discussion board and posting of important material. All your assignments (except discussion board) that are due on-line will be through MyAccountingLab . Discussion Board – You will have 2 to 5 discussion board questions throughout the semester. These questions will require a paragraph or two of explaining or answering. To receive full credit for the assignment, you must answer the question and also respond to at least one of your classmates post. Check due dates both on CANVAS and MyAccountingLab. The dates will always be correct on MyAccountingLab and sometimes they do not update or post to CANVAS. So don’t just rely on CANVAS. There are many means to confirm dates and make sure that you are staying on schedule. Also there is an excel spreadsheet of dates that you can print out and use as an accurate calendar. Grades are sometimes slow updating to CANVAS. Your grades scored for assignments will always be available and up to date inside of MyAccountingLab. So if you think there is a problem updating your grades on CANVAS, give it some time. They will eventually update and you can always check MyAccountingLab for your grades, and these are the grades I download and use. CANVAS and MyAccountingLab are an integral part of this class. Make sure that you check these sites regularly for announcements, due dates and important information. Miscellaneous Information: Prerequisites: Completion of BUS 120, Financial Accounting, or Equivalent Course. Absences: This course is completely online. Make sure you complete your work on time. Accommodations: Academic accommodations are available for students with disabilities. Make-Up Work: The instructor is under no obligation to provide make-up work if a student has failed to take a particular exam or complete a specific assignment. Generally, there will be no make-ups for missed quizzes or similar assignments if a deadline for submission has not been met. Once an exam or quiz expires there will be no possibility of making it up or opening up the assignment. Once an exam or quiz expires, students have an opportunity to go back and look at their results in detail with explanations of the problem and computations. This is the major reason for completing the assignments on time and why there will be no make ups available. Tutoring: The accounting faculty strongly recommends tutoring for any student who is experiencing difficulty in grasping the concepts and staying current with the material. It is important that a student recognize and take action early in the semester before getting too far behind. Please know, however, that tutoring is not meant to be a substitute for doing the work. Before going to the Tutoring Center, a student should have already worked hard and attempted the material to be covered in the tutoring session. The Tutoring Center, located at L-126 in the LRC building, is generally able to provide tutoring in financial and managerial accounting each semester, but not always. This is a completely online course, there will be no physical meeting place. I have uploaded the syllabus to CANVAS. Please go to CANVAS and login to see the syllabus. Read it very carefully, it is full of very important information. If you can’t get into CANVAS, email me and I will send you a syllabus via email. Class officially begins Monday, January 27th. There will be a lot of material to cover in 16 weeks. Make sure you pace yourself and give yourself enough time to complete the assignments. This course is very manageable if you stay on top of the material. Your first assignment will be due, Sunday night February 2nd by 11PM. This assignment will be in CANVAS, specifically Discussion Board Section and just warrants a simple statement and any questions you may have. Your first assignment from MyAccountingLab will be HW#1 Wednesday, February 5th. This is so that everyone can get their books and if there is some problem getting logged in, you will have enough time to catch up. Just because I am giving you this extra time, don’t wait to the last minute. Your first Quiz will be due Friday February 7th and this will be Quiz #1. Your next set of assignments from MyAccountingLab will be due that following Sunday, February 9th and this will be both HW#2 and Quiz#2. All assignments are due by 11PM of the Due date and all other assignments in MyAccountinglab will be due on Sunday nights. We do a chapter a week and those assignments are due by that Sunday night.
