Intermediate deadlines: By noon Thursday of Week 7: Submit a full draft of “Citations and Annotations”; (you may revise this for your assignment submission) A major goal of this course and of your final research paper is to develop a deeper, historical and contextualized understanding of issues confronting people and places in the Global South or/and in the Global North. In order to do this, you will choose a specific topic and geographic location of study which you will examine through discourse analysis and political economy analysis in your final paper. Scaffolding assignment #2 provides the material for the political economy analysis component of your final paper. The objectives of scaffolding assignment #2 are: 1. Conduct targeted research on your chosen place and topic. You will select three appropriate scholarly sources (peer-reviewed articles, books or book chapters) for your political economy analysis, and identify course material, such as required or recommended readings, that helps you conduct your analysis. 2. Use course concepts and content (course readings, films, lecture materials etc.), to conduct a political economy analysis of your chosen place (country/location). Rigorously completing this assignment through the application of course concepts and engaging with your peers in a discussion of how you see these concepts play out in your chosen topic and site will provide the scaffolding for writing a strong final research paper. Objective 1: Citations and Annotations 1. Identify three scholarly articles that discuss your chosen topic and place, or which provide key contextual information for understanding your topic in that place. For a place to start, check out our course research guide, under the “Scholarly Journal Articles and Books” tab. Using Chicago Author-Date citation style, provide a full citation for the three scholarly sources you have chosen, with a 2-3 sentence annotation that includes a very brief summary of the article’s content and how it helps you understand the place/issue you have chosen for your research project. 2. Using Chicago Author-Date citation style, cite a minimum of three course readings that you find applicable to help you understand the political economy of your chosen place, and provide a 1-2 sentence explanation for each of why you find the reading to be useful. The course readings you select don’t need to directly relate to your chosen place/topic; they may be readings that help you understand political economy more broadly, by providing conceptual tools for your analysis. 1 GEOG 230: Geographies of Global Inequality Instructor: Elizabeth Shoffner | Spring 2020 Objective 2: Conduct a Political Economy Analysis Drawing from what you have learned in lecture about how to conduct a political economy analysis, and using the different (historical) stages of the International Division of Labor, use the following questions as guides to identify your country’s position in the global system and how its position relates to inequality within your country. Remember to cite both course readings and the scholarly sources you’ve identified using Chicago Author-Date parenthetical citation. (Note: Good citation hygiene will keep you from accidentally plagiarizing when you write your final paper!) 1. How has the position of your chosen place/country in the global system shifted throughout IDL 1, 2 and 3? Based on the research you’ve conducted, describe what you know of this trajectory and any details associated with these shifts. 2. How have wealth and resources been accumulated within and/or outside of your country/place and how are they distributed within the society? How does your chosen topic intersect with this accumulation/distribution of resources? 3. What sorts of power relations are produced based on this distribution of wealth and resources a) on a national level? b) on an international level? Notice possible unequal distribution of power and wealth according to race, gender, class and also places, such as regions or rural/urban divides. 4. How can the topic you have chosen to research be addressed and understood across different scales (the local, the national and the global)? What are key tensions that you see among the scales at which you can engage the topic? 5. Who are the key social actors involved in your topic/place (not only those who might have been held responsible for the problem studied, but all of the agents)? 6. What sorts of political and/or economic struggles have occurred and what were the causes and consequences of these? Did these struggles produce changes in the structure of power or the economic structure? How does this relate to your chosen topic? After you’ve responded to questions 1-6, review your responses. What does all this have to do with inequality? With that question in mind, write a 300-350 word analysis that draws connections between the present situation of the place and topic you have chosen to study and the histories and global economic shifts that have shaped it. For other suggestions on how to think about this topic, you can refer to the questions associated with your topic in the “Research Topics” guidelines—but remember that you don’t need to answer all the questions for your topic now! Deliverables due to Canvas by 11:59pm Pacific Time May 22nd: Submit your responses to items 1-6, followed by your 300-350-word analysis, as a pdf or Word doc. 2 ...
