PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE
A. Professional Presence
Question A 1
Health beliefs are one of the factors that determine ones health. This is because, beliefs
exert a powerful influence through how the body, mind, and spirit interact. All the existing
healing models have different maladies of the human condition, but seek to treat one health
problem. This part of the paper seeks to discuss the difference between the bio-psycho-social
health model and the body-mind health model.
To contemplate the difference between the two health models, it is important to first
understand the difference between the mind and the body. The body can be defined as an
organism made up of various parts that enhance the different mechanisms to function
appropriately. Therefore, all the body parts are interdependent for their functionality. The mind is
composed of information and conditioning from our experiences. Thus, the mind is used to
synthesize information collected. On the other hand, the brain acts as a device in which the mind
operates. Thus, the brain cannot function without the mind as the core element to its
functionality. In simple terms, the brain can be compared to a smartphone while the mind can be
compared to an operating system. A smartphone cannot operate without the operating system,
and so it the operating system. Additionally, the device breaks, the information can be
transferred to another device. The mind is only fed with information and this can be recollected.
Therefore, it would be appropriate to assert that the mind and body are incomplete without the
spirit.
The bio-psycho-social health model adopts a religious and spiritual approach rather than
a medical approach in enhancing health, healing and relieving pain. The model advocates for
spirituality and religion as more important compared to treatment through medical diagnosis
PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE
(Marks, 2005). As a result, this health model is defined by three main components as discussed
below. One, the model asserts that healing does not only entail healing specific symptoms, but
instead should encompass the general health and well being of a person, community, and the
family. Therefore, this can only be realized spiritually and religiously as they inform some
actions which promote both physical and mental health. Secondly, the model asserts that for
some people and families, their health experiences are related to their spiritual concerns. These
concerns may showcase through either emotional or physical symptoms (Marks, 2005). Thirdly,
the models assert that any health approach does not only seek to treat the physical ailment, but
also ensure one has comfort and support to the individual, family, and the community (Marks,
2005). Therefore, from the above discussion it would be appropriate to conclude that, based on
the bio-psycho-social health model, treatment is beyond treating the physical symptoms through
medical procedures but should also encompass the well being of the society and family.
Concerning the body-mind health model, it is based on the fact that one’s emotional state
directly affects the physical well being and vice-versa. This is because the mind and the body are
interdependent. Therefore, for the mind to function appropriately, the body too has to be
functioning appropriately, and for the body to function appropriately, the mind should be
functioning appropriately (Chan et al., 2002). This shows the interconnectedness between the
body and the mind. Therefore, for one to be described as healthy and well-being, they should be
physically and mentally fit.
Question A 2
One of the contests concerning the medical sector is question on whether the western or
the eastern healing model is superior. The western model is generally known as an orthodox of
medicine. It is mainly used by health practitioners in health facilities. Patients are treated using
PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE
prescription, surgical operations, among other medicinal methods. On the other hand, the eastern
healing model relies on the connection between the mind, body, and spirit to heal. It mainly
relies on spiritual practices of healing such as meditation, rather than the use of pharmaceutical
drugs, operations and tests. The eastern healing model uses a more natural approach of healing
symptoms by use of herbs among other natural strategies. The main advantage of the western
healing model is that it has a quick effectivity, compared to the eastern model. However, the
medication does not always treat the root cause of the problem. Additionally, the pharmaceutical
drugs can negatively affect the body. Concerning the eastern healing model, it can be effective
on particular symptoms such as body aches and pains, despite lack of scientific research on the
same. It has proved helpful especially in enhancing weight loss. The main disadvantage
attributed to the eastern healing approach is the fact that there is little scientific facts known
about it.
Question A 3
Distractions and mindfulness have adverse implications in my nursing practice. This is
because am more likely to concentrate on one task such as educating a patient or administer
drugs when am mindful to a single task. Additionally, am less likely to react negatively to
someone’s mistake. This prompts my response to be high, especially when am mindful about a
certain issue. For example, am fast in responding to a patient when am mindful in comparison to
when am distracted.
Therefore, distractions are more likely to affect my capability to offer quality services.
When distracted I find it hard to make appropriate and timely decisions and may cause errors
especially when administering drugs. Additionally, distractions reduce my capability to get
things done on time. This is because I may take breaks amid a task as compared to when being
PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE
mindful. Distractions can also enhance the procrastination of duties. Distractions are mainly
influenced by financial constraints and some patients’ bad attitude.
B. Personality Preferences
Question B 1
(Jung, n.d)
Question B 2
The Jung personality test do not accurately describe me. However, some of the
personalities describe who I am. Concerning what worked for me, I am a reserved and would
rarely start a conversation especially with strange persons. Even when am around familiar people
PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE
such as in a meeting at work, I tend to listen to other people opinion more than share my
opinions. However, I am very dependable person and also responsible. Probably this informs
why I have several team leader chores at my work place. I also tend to focus on what is at hand
and commit my self to the end of the task. I also rely on facts, especially in discussions and when
handling practical matters. I feel my career choice as an accountant exhibit my concentration
skills and commitment to the allocated duties. Concerning what didn’t work for me, despite the
fact am an introvert, I easily lose my control when offended. I have lost my patience especially
when am experiencing stressful episodes. I am also offended by criticism and cannot withstand
someone to criticize me without valid reasons. However, I care about the feelings of others and
only utter when necessary. As a result of this, I have never gotten into a confrontation with any
on my colleagues a work. I let them have their say first always before provide my contribution.
Question B 3
One of the amin challenging personality is my introvert trait. I rarely share my feelings
and also find it hard to share them with others. I like keeping my feelings to myself. This has
resulted into conflict in some instances, especially when dealing with an extrovert person,
and easily share their feelings. However, since am aware of this, I can take it to my
advantage and prepare myself adequately and in advance to express my opinion. This will
help curtain any conflict that might emerge. This will be done if I know that I will have a
meeting, or attend a workshop with my colleagues. To plan for this, I would first socializing
with familiar people as I build my courage and be able to face strangers and more people.
Another challenge occurs when we engaging with colleagues who we don’t share similar
sense of responsibilities or duties. I find it hard to understand people who fail on their
promises since it inconveniences everyone, thus a loss of time. When such a scenario
PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE
happens, I find it hard to tolerate and engage them more. However, having known this, I
engage the persons on how important it is to deliver on time. By communicating myself, I
have found it easy handling such scenarios.
C. Mindful Practice
Question C 1
Concerning physical goals, I seek to start regular exercises, done a minimum of three
days a week. Additionally, I seek to reduce weight and attain an acceptable BMI. Concerning
vital/rhythmic goals I seek to balance my family duties with school work. Additionally, I will
better my care. Concerning mental/emotional goals I seek to reduce stress and embrace help
from others. Additionally, I will a new medication each day. Concerning biographical/spiritual
body goals, I seek to reconnect with my spiritual affluence and also connect my sisters with their
spiritual affluence.
Question C 2
This section involves discussing how I will achieve the identified mindful practices.
Therefore, concerning the physical goals, I will spend at least two days in the gym working out,
and one day in the pitch playing my game of choice. I will also eat healthy foods by increasing
vegetable content and reducing animal fats in my diet. I will also reduce caffeine intake.
Concerning the vital/rhythmic goals, I will create a precise schedule that defines the time for
school work and family duties. I will also take more time eating healthy and appropriate foods
characterized by less fast foods. Concerning mental/emotional goals, I will minimize my stress
by realizing recognizing and trusting the fact that other people can offer an appropriate solution
to any problem. I will also look for new medication strategies daily to expand my general
PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE
knowledge prowess. Concerning the biographical/spiritual body goals, I will ensure I have read
the bible before I sleep for spiritual nourishment. I will also ensure that my sisters go to church
on Sundays without fail.
D. Healing Environments
Question D 1
An ideal healing environment is characterized as a place where patients with physical,
spiritual, environmental, and behavioural support. Optimal healing environment should be
characterized by behavioral, internal, external, and interpersonal factors. The Vanderbilt
University Medical Center in Nashville and the University of Michigan hospital in Michigan are
the two identified hospitals with an optimal healing environment.
The four factors of an optimum healing environment can be identified within the
Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, hence its preference and high ranking as the
best hospitals. Internally, Vanderbilt University Medical Center facilitates patients with
harmony. The mission and value seek to seek to provide quality care by embracing advanced
technologies, evidence-based research, and an optimum temperature where patients can feel
comfortable. The health facility provides guitar music to help patients and their friends or
families relax. The health facility also provides spiritual help in different religious dominions
available at the conference hall, where patients can mediate and connect with their spiritual
world as they recover. The hospital also provides magazines, newspapers, mind games and
puzzles, to help patients lower their anxiety. Interpersonally, the health facility has adopted an
effective communication model to enhance communication between the patients and medical
practitioners. The hospital has a housing program for the patient’s family members or relatives,
offered at a subsidized fee. This provides the patients with a chance to reconnect with their friend
PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE
and family members. Behaviorally, the hospital offers a nutrition counseling as a complementary
healing method. Externally, the hospital is strongly built to withstand natural calamities such an
earthquake. Additionally, the ground and the pathways are slightly sloppy to withstand floods.
The sewer lines and water channels are closely monitored to avoid floods and stagnant waters
within the compound.
University of Michigan hospital in Michigan is another example of an optimum healing
environment. Internally, the health facility offers patients with a holistic approach care. The
hospital has provided as garden where the patients can relax and meditate as they recover. They
educate patients using audio and visual technologies. This is a measure to ease patients’ anxiety.
Interpersonally, the health facility offers rest lounges for the family members and friends to rest.
Interpretation services are also offered to enhance effective communication between health
practitioners and patients. Behaviorally, the health facility offers customized food services but
have to meat health standards. Externally, the hospital provides an ideal view point to a water
front and ideal artworks placed on the hospitals walls to provide a peaceful and cool setting.
Question D 2
It would be appropriate to adopt and implement the insights identified from both
Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the University of Michigan hospital optimal health
environment. To start with I would ensure that there is enough light in all patients’ room by
opening all the curtains in the morning and ensuring they are closed in the evening. Additionally,
I would ensure that all the facilities such as the washrooms are in an appropriate condition, in
that the patient will feel comfortable using any facility within the health facility. Behaviorally, all
patients will undergo healthy lifestyle education with much emphasis paid on nutrition and
physical activity. The education will also be based on individual patients’ medication to enhance
PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE
quick recovery. Internally, I would first create a good rapport with the patient where I would also
ask them whether they know what they are suffering from, the medication they are taking, and
also how to care of themselves. This will majorly enhance quality improvement. Interpersonally,
I would ensure that there is someone who is closely part of the patients healing treatment and
healing period. This can either be a friend or family member. I will also inform them about the
patients condition and train them as caregivers.
Conclusion
Efficiency and quality health facilities are dependent on the resources available, including
human resources. Most countries health facilities face an increasing need to institute quality
improvement strategies. One of the key players in the health facilities is nurses. Focus on nurses
can realize quality and efficiency in health facilities. Quality improvement involves continuously
providing services that meet certain standards and problem resolution. To realize quality
improvement, all departments within an institution need to cooperate to offer better health
services. Nurses are responsible for receiving and handling patients. By working closely with the
patients, they can monitor their health. Some paly their role beyond the health facilities.
Therefore, all health facilities should seek to attain an optimum healing environment by
improving the quality of services offered.
