Final Paper - Humanities
The research paper will be a thorough review and discussion of the topic you chose in Written Assignment Week Two. As described in Week Two, the paper should be a review of a specific psychological disorder studied in the field of biopsychology, along with a review and analysis of methods used in biopsychology to investigate the cause of the disorder and to treat the disorder. You will base your review on specific studies of different methodological approaches of biopsychology to understanding and treating the disorder. (Note: It is important that you choose methodological approaches that you understand and are comfortable discussing in detail. For example, you should not choose gene knockout technology in the study of alcohol abuse if you are weak in the area of genetics and molecular genetics.) psy7510_gr.pdf psy7510_week_2_assignment__1_.docx Unformatted Attachment Preview PSY7510.W6A1.07.2018 Description: Total Possible Score: 30.00 The Topic and Problem Statement are Identified Total: 4.50 Distinguished - The topic and problem statement are very clearly identified. Powered by The Diagnosis and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder Jasmine Anderson PSY7510 Raymond Daniel December 9, 2019 The Diagnosis and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder Over two million people in the world are living with bipolar disease according to a research conducted in the year 2017 (Flowers et al., 2017). Bipolar disease is a psychobiological disorder generally involving the change in moods and emotions from high moods to low ones. Experts in this condition suggest that each individual has their times of high moods with other times having low moods but emphasize that people suffering from this condition have extreme shifts that disrupt their productivity at work, their social life and consequently, their self image. Apart from the socially produced complications, patients experience disrupted sleeping patterns, sharply varying energy levels and even varying appetite. Recent works of research have attributed bipolar disorder to hormonal imbalances and problems with chemical neurotransmitters in the brain. During maniac episodes patients experience overexcitement, high bouts of energy, a feeling of distraction, the urge to speak a lot, high sex drive and even restlessness and lack of concentration (Yatham et al., 2018). On the other hand, when the patient is in depressive episodes, patients experience boredom, low energy levels, and feelings of helplessness, irritability, insomnia and even thoughts of suicide. Bipolar disorder can be diagnosed using a number of methods. The viability error percentage necessitates the inclusion of various methods. The first diagnostic tests used are the physical and medical history. This entails the use of medical documents where the patients lets the physician understand the kind of infections and conditions the patient has gone through (Yatham et al., 2018). The psychiatrist observes symptoms and read documents to determine the medical conditions that have affected the patient. This leads to the elimination of possibilities of other conditions and creating emphasis on a specific condition. When therapists link the symptoms to depression they conclusively determine its presence. Upon identification of neurotransmission problems and hormonal imbalances, experts have emphasized on the effectiveness of drugs aimed at stabilizing moods through introduction of proteins that develop hormones needed for mood stabilization. These medicines target the brain. Patients are constantly advised to complement the pharmacological treatment with psychological therapies to effectively resolve the disorder (Carlborg et al., 2015). Another treatment that has been identified as effective is the change of lifestyle to reduce stress, a key factor in the development of the disease. The European Journal of Public Health, 26(5), 867-871. In their research activity published in 2016, Osby and others embarked on researching the prevalence of bipolar disease, giving insights on the causes of the illness, the likely causes and evidence based practice that have been tested as successful in other regions. The paper identified that the illness was contributed by hormonal imbalances and that more than 2. 3 million people around the globe were suffering from the disease. The group of scholars also identified that the illness was aggravated by stress and genetic factors. This research will inform this study by giving it the statistics on the disease prevalence and give likely causes of the disease. Correll, C. U., Detraux, J., De Lepeleire, J., & De Hert, M. (2015). Effects of antipsychotics, antidepressants and mood stabilizers on risk for physical diseases in people with schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder. World psychiatry, 14(2), 119-136. Four researchers sought to understand the seriousness of the bipolar disorder, focusing on its effects on the individual and the society. Corell and three others identified that the disorder caused two categories of conditions. First, they found out that during a maniac episode, patients would experience high energy levels, restlessness and even difficulty in concentrating. During the low episodes, patients would experience low energy levels and boredom coupled with sadness. The study will add this paper deeper insight into understanding the disease with a particular focus on the effects of the disease. Additionally, this work will offer knowledge on the two categories of the disease and how each category can affect the life of the patients Carlborg, A., Ferntoft, L., Thuresson, M., & Bodegard, J. (2015). Population study of disease burden, management, and treatment of bipolar disorder in Sweden: a retrospective observational registry study. Bipolar disorders, 17(1), 76-85. Carlborg and three others sought to investigate the nature of bipolar ideas with regard to its effects on the social realms of society. The research work also had the task of determining the trends of the infection in different societies outside America. The study found out that the disorder was rampant in the contemporary times with majority of the patients failing to know of its presence and seeking medical attention. It was also established, through this investigation, that the disease was more prevalent in America than in other first –class countries. This assignment will draw data from the research on the prevalence of the disease. Flowers, S. A., Evans, S. J., Ward, K. M., McInnis, M. G., & Ellingrod, V. L. (2017). Interaction between atypical antipsychotics and the gut microbiome in a bipolar disease cohort. Pharmacotherapy: The Journal of Human Pharmacology and Drug Therapy, 37(3), 261-267. This research centered on investigating the brain bio-chemicals that play a part in the development of bipolar disorder. Tests and discussions were made to prove the similarities and relationships between deficiency of certain neurotransmitters and the disturbance of hormones which in turn affect the moods of the individual. It was concluded that development of higher levels of cortisol, a stress hormone triggered the disorder. The study will help me in this assignment by offering authoritative insights on the connections between these hormones and the disruption of social moods. Yatham, L. N., Kennedy, S. H., Parikh, S. Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) and International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) 2018 guidelines for the management of patients with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorders, 20(2), 97-170. A group of seven scholars investigated on the best guidelines to help therapists diagnose patients of bipolar disease. The group identified the use of medical and physical history of the patients as the most viable mechanism of clearing the presence or absence of a disease. The study identified the vitality of the incorporation of other diagnosis methods with the aim of complementing each other and avoiding errors. The finding of the paper will inform my work on the most appropriate means to testing this condition. References Carlborg, A., Ferntoft, L., Thuresson, M., & Bodegard, J. (2015).
