STRATEGIC PLAN, PART 2: INTERNAL ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
2
Introduction
A realistic assessment of any firm’s internal resources and capabilities is essential for it to
succeed strategically. Through an internal analysis, the strengths to build on and to eliminate the
weaknesses are well known when formulating the organizations strategies. The firms resources,
objectives, policies, and plans are considered when conducting this analysis. American Greetings
has several internal factors that have helped it succeed in its market. The company is privately
owned and manufactures greeting cards and social expression products. They sell paper greeting
cards, electronic greeting cards, and party products.
Analysis
American Greetings is one of the leading companies in this field. The US, Australia, New
Zealand, Canada, and the UK are major markets of American Greetings products. It is the secondlargest company in the US in greeting card production after Hallmark. The company is based in
Westlake, Ohio, Cleveland. This paper contains a detailed internal environmental analysis of the
company’s key employees, competitors, products, and services offered. The report aims to help in
strategy formulation to understand customers, partners, and competitors well.
Strengths are the characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over
others (Meredith & Pilkington, 2018). The first strength of American greetings is its distribution
channels and how they reach their customers. It has outlets in almost every state in the US with a
reliable distribution of its products and services. Secondly, its cost factor makes its products
affordable to people of all levels, which is enabled by the low cost of production. Thirdly, it is the
most reliable supplier, therefore, enhancing a good relationship between the community and the
company. As a result, their dealers promote their products and services apart from supplying them.
STRATEGIC PLAN, PART 2: INTERNAL ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
3
American Greetings is also strong financially, with huge profits that can be used for future
expenses. They also have a well advanced IT system that ensures efficiency in service delivery
hence improved sales. Automation at various stages of production in the company has provided
reduced production costs.
Additionally, the company has also been in the market for a long time making its products
valued by customers due to consistency and meeting their demands. Their workforce is also
accredited, diversified, and qualified. An interactive website, social media platforms, entrance into
new markets, quality of its products, and new partnerships with its dealers are other strengths of
American Greetings.
However, the company has also its share of weakness, which needs to be improved. First,
the company has invested less expenditure on research and development compared to its rivals in
the market. The next weakness is that most of the property owned by American Greetings is rented,
which is not cost-friendly and lessen the company’s assets. There is also a lack of financial
planning at American Greetings, which can be identified through the cash flow problems. Less
market research by the company in their field of service is another weakness that can affect their
business negatively because they are not able to learn the changes in the market at a particular
time. Low budget allocation for its quality control department has led to inconsistency and may
lead to quality damage across outlets. Organizational structures can hinder or promote
performance, which depends on the effectiveness of workflow influence and supervisory
relationships. Performance management strategies can fail to achieve its goal of improved product
and service if there are no policies in place (Hinson, Avomyo, Kuanda & Asante, 2017). For
example, decision making is centralized, which makes it hard for junior officers to implement
strategies without approval from their seniors. The demand for greeting cards is also declining

with time because of substitutes for other products. Low work morale, unsystematic appraisal,
high workload, and high employee turnover compared to competitors in the field are also American
Greetings’ weaknesses.
Some external factors or opportunities have given American Greetings an advantage to
compete favorably in the market. One of the most significant factors is the internet. Due to the
increase in internet usage in the world, the company has diversified in selling electronic cards
online, which has given the company an opportunity for expansion hence reaching a broader
market. The next chance is e-commerce; this is good because most people are making purchases
online courtesy of internet availability. Change in customer behaviors is also an opportunity since
it provides an avenue for American Greetings to venture into new products and services to boost
its profits. Social media platforms, technology developments, an increase in household income,
population increase, low inflation, low-interest rates, and loosened regulations are other
opportunities that have favored the American Greetings business.
American Greetings, just like any other organization, is faced by various threats. One of
the treats is competition from companies selling similar products. The company has experienced
stiff competition from Hallmark, which is the leader in the industry. Technological developments
by its competitors who have put in place new technology also pose as a threat to their business.
Newmarket entrants are also a threat since they have gained the market share hence the likelihood
of a reduction of sales for American Greeting. Skilled workforce shortage in certain places also is
perceived as a threat that may affect the profit growth of the company. The other threats American
Greetings is facing are increasing competition, availability of counterfeit goods, exchange rate
fluctuations, change in consumer tastes, political uncertainties, interest rates fluctuation, and rise
of fuel prices.
STRATEGIC PLAN, PART 2: INTERNAL ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
5
Internal environmental analysis is a useful tool for company assessment, but it has its
limitations (Hinson, Avomyo, Kuanda & Asante, 2017). The major limitation is that an overlap of
weaknesses and strengths can occur. This can be stipulated when a single factor is both a weakness
and a strength. For instance, having many outlets in an economy going through a recession can be
a weakness while it can be seen as a strength in a thriving economy. This analysis is used as a
starting point for decision making but does not indicate how to achieve objectives. Changes that
take place in a competitive environment are not taken into consideration because this assessment
is static. The company may also overplay the factors listed by the internal environmental analysis.
This internal analysis also overlooks external and internal interrelationships.
A weighted internal environmental analysis should be conducted for American greetings
in response to the mentioned limitations. Analysis should involve the assignment of weighing each
of the weaknesses and strengths in the case of American Greetings. Estimation of the probability
of an event occurring on the external environment should be involved. By doing so, it makes it
easy to focus on a more critical issue and give less consideration to others.
Conclusion
Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats are listed by the internal environmental
analysis of American Greetings. Still, the management of the company is not told what can be
done by these. To prevail over these limitations, advanced environmental analysis can be
conducted to come up with appropriate strategies. It can be made possible by listing StrengthsOpportunities (SO) strategies that take advantage of opportunities by use of strengths. StrengthsThreats (ST) strategies are also listed; this involves fighting threats using strengths. By fully

understanding them, begin to make decisions that reinforce the strengths, guard against weakness,
capitalize on the opportunity, and mitigate the threat.
