CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 Introduction
This chapter is about how to collect data. In addition, it includes research methodology used to
conduct this research. Research methodology is the process used to collect data and information
to make business discussion. The methodology may include interview, survey, publication
research and other research techniques. So, it is necessary to choose a suitable research
methodology. It is not enough to properly define what information which the study intends to
collect and understand and why but it is also important to define unambiguously how to accomplish
the task of collecting and understanding this information.
This chapter contains several points which are; section 3.1 introduction. 3.2 describe research
design. 3.3 population of the study. 3.4 present the sampling frame used to generate a sample of
employee for this study. Section 3.5 is about the pilot test. Sampling, item coding, specific data
collection and analysis activities and discussed in section 3.6 & 3.7 and its sub. Section 3.8 discuss
about legal, ethical, and social issues. A chapter summary is given in section 3.9.
3.2 Research design
Research design is typically include how to collect data and what are the tools are used and how
to use tools and intended means for analyze the data collected.
This study is based on one data collection tool which is questionnaire. In order to achieve the
objectives of this study, the primary data source is used to collect all different facts appropriately.
The primary data come from conduct initial interview with some participating officials within the
organization, and conduct questionnaire which focus on the requirement of the staff in the
organization. Therefore, the secondary data based on reviewing a lot of scientific research and
books related to the study. Therefore, the researcher has chosen both methods quantitative and
qualitative to be used in the research.
3.2.1 Quantitative data and Qualitative data
Qualitative data: data which are allocated through observation and interviews. They are
information which cannot be measured (McLeod 2008).
Quantitative data: are data which are allocated through measuring things and analyzed through
numeric comparisons. In addition, they are information which can be measured and written in
numbers (McLeod 2008).
3.3 Population of the study and sample size
Population of the study means a study for group of individuals taken from the general population
who shared a common feature like age, gender, or health care. The study of the group for purpose
of several reasons and then find how and why to find solutions (National Cancer Institute 2017).
The research will be limited on Human Resource Department in GTGC- Oman.
Ghantoot transport and general construction Company (GTGC) has more than 2000 employees.
However, it is difficult to study and collect from all the employees of the organization. Therefore,
the target population of this research will be for employees of GTGC where the total questionnaire
are 55 participants but the researcher respondents only from 35 employees from male and female
from different ages and different departments of GTGC.
3.4 Sampling technique
Sampling technique is another name of specific process through which sample entities were
selected (oecd 2017). There are two types of sample, sample probability random samples which
are (simple random sample, systematic random sample, stratified random sample, multistage
sample, cluster sample) and the second type non probability samples which are (convenience
sample, purposive sample, quota) (pennstate Eberly college of science 2017). In this research, the
researcher used simple random sample. The researches chose this technique because it facilitated
analysis of results, it depend on random sample in the research and finally reduce bias.
3.5 Research Instruments and Validity and Reliability Testing
Research instruments are a tool of collecting data or what you use to collect information to answer
your research questions. They include questionnaire, reading, interview, and observation.
Research tool: the questionnaire was used to collect data in this research and analyze the result.
The questionnaire questions were developed many times by the researcher in order to be consistent
and fit with the objective of the study or research objective (Edekin 2012).
3.5.1 Questionnaire
Questionnaire is a set of questions to get statistically useful information or personal information
from individual. It’s also can be defined as a written questionnaire with space for answers. There
are two types of questionnaire which are open ended questions and close ended questions. In this
study of the research the questionnaire consisted close ended questions, the closed questions were
(agree, disagree, strongly agree, strongly disagree).
Contents of the questionnaire
The questionnaire was distributed to the head of department, staff, manager, and employees. Were
it consisted: (agree=1, disagree=2, strongly agree=3, strongly disagree=4). The questionnaire will
also have different sections. In section 1 will be about personal information like (age, gender,
position etc…) and section 2 will be about some close ended questions around (1-5).
Questionnaires can be used by several ways:
-
Using e-mail questionnaire
-
Telephone questionnaire
-
Postal questionnaire and others (2017).
3.5.2 Why you choose questionnaire
Questionnaire is one of the cheap, quick, and efficient ways to collect large number of information
from large sample of people. The researcher can collect the data quickly no need to present when
questionnaire were completed. Answering questionnaire will not take time as much as interview,
also questionnaire can be answered at any free time of the person and can be sent electronically.
Therefore, the questionnaire of this study will measure the answers of the questions of the current
study; reduce time and effort (McLeod 2017).
3.5.3 Advantages and disadvantages of the questionnaire:
Advantages of questionnaire
Questionnaire is one of the most affordable ways to collect or gather quantitative data. It can be
placed on your own website or through e-mail for the customers. Can collect large number of data
on any subject. Therefore, it’s practical can be managed by different ways. The questionnaire gives
speed results; it’s easy and quick to collect data. Questionnaire allows you to gather and collect
information from large number of audience. It can distribute questions through online to anyone
and anywhere in the world. Finally, questionnaires give respondent to take their time to complete
the questions (Debois 2016).
Disadvantages of questionnaire
Dishonesty can be an issue, where respondents may not be honest with their answers and this may
be because of some reasons, including desired social bias and trying to protect privacy. Differences
in understanding and interpretation, respondent can face difficult to understand the meaning of
some questions and this may lead to dislocated result. Thence, best way to compact this situation
is make simple and easy questions to be answered. Lack of personalization. Finally, when using
questionnaire there is a chance for some respondents to ignore some questions of the questionnaire
(Debois 2016).
The validity and reliability of questionnaire is representing in the appropriate and comprehensive
content of all information according to objectives and purpose of the research.
3.6 Data Collection Techniques
Data collection: is the information that you collected, it can come from different group of source.
There are different techniques to use when collect or gather data. Below are the most common
techniques to collect data:
3.6.1 Primary Data
3.6.2 Secondary Data
-
Interviews: can be conduct through phone or by person, and can be done formally and
informally. For example: one-on-one conversation.
-
Questionnaire: responses can be analyzed with quantitative methods, and results will be
easier than qualititative techniques.
-
Observation: can provide quantitative and qualititative data and can use videos to provide
documentation.
-
Focus group: gather or collect information about combined opinions.
-
Document and records: consists of examining existing data and can be inexpensive way to
collect information (university of minnesota 2017).
In this research, the researcher will use questionnaire to gather quantitative data and measure
employee satisfaction on evaluation of the company and how they accept the e-recruitment system.
The questionnaire is about different questions about e-recruitment system to know employee
opinion on that. The questionnaire divided into three main parts: the first part includes
demographic factors of the questionnaire, the second part questions on e-recruitment system,
finally, contains items related to the organization performance. In this research, the researcher used
closed questions structure where the respondents will response based on a specific answer and it
is yes or no. also the researcher used secondary sources to collect and gather data about erecruitment. The secondary sources which used are: some websites, some books related to Human
Resource Management and projects related to this study.
3.7 Data Analysis Techniques
Data analysis is the collecting and organizing data where researcher can reach to a result. Data
analysis allows one to answer questions, solve problem and extract important information
(study.com 2017).
The researcher will use Statpac program to implement statistical methods of the questionnaire.
Reasons of using it because it is easy to use and because it is an advanced and modern program.
From the program which it is a statistical can make all diagrams with high accuracy.
3.8 Legal, Ethical and Social Issues
Research ethics focus on mainting confidential data of the corporation. Through the project the
researcher used questionnaire to get information about the study. The questionnaire involve to ask
clearly and sensitive with ethical and legal. To conduct this study legally and ethically, the
researcher must send letter of approval to GTGC before starting, also all the information and data
that researcher get will be from trusted sources and all results will be correct. Need to get
permission before taking any information of the company to avoid risk. So this study related to
develop e-recruitment system in a perfect way and there are no ethical issues in this research or
violation of the law. To have such a system of e-recruitment that works to select and hire talented
workforce.
3.9 Summary of the chapter
This chapter outlined the research methodology that was adopted for the study. In this respect, the
research design, target population, sampling techniques, sample size, sample techniques, research
instruments and data sources used to collect data were clarified. This chapter also highlighted the
legal, ethical, and social issues of the research; also how the data collected would be presented and
analyzed. The researcher used questionnaire as a primary source and also distribute the
questionnaire for 35 employees to get their opinion of the e-recruitment system and other
information. In addition, use some books, magazines and previous studies will be used as
secondary source, the researcher will use Statpac program to analyze the questionnaire and draw
diagrams. Finally, the next chapter provides the study findings of the questionnaire.
