Quick Guide to Crafting a Purpose Statement
A purpose statement defines who you are and what you bring to the world. It’s a
statement of how you use your strengths, passions, and values to impact the world
around you.
A purpose statement is, at its core, a definition of who you are. It brings together your strengths,
passions, and values. By developing your purpose statement, you clearly reveal who you are,
what you want to do, and why you want to do it, and you will ultimately set yourself up for
success as you set your goals, both personal and professional. Consider this to be your inner
guiding compass as you navigate through this game of life!
Reflect:
Start by asking yourself the following questions. These questions will help you focus on how you
view yourself and the values that you hold true. Remember, it is important that you answer
these questions as HONESTLY as possible. There is no “right” answer. However, it is important
that you really take time to think through them and answer them thoughtfully with specific life
examples.

What do you do best?
What do you value most?
When are you most effective at impacting people?
When are you most satisfied with your work?
What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
Review:
After you’ve had some time to sit and reflect on these questions, complete the table below. This
will help you organize your thoughts. Try to get at least 10 things in each column. Of course,
you are welcome to list as many things as you’d like! Remember, be honest and true to yourself!

Now you’re ready to draft your purpose statement.
A personal purpose statement is no more than one or two sentences. It is specific and clear and
it is aligned with your core values.
Below is a template to help you structure your thoughts. Remember, this is only a draft and will
be developed more throughout the course.
Here’s a template for your purpose statement. Just fill in the blanks:
My purpose is to use my (specific skills, talents, strengths passions, expertise) to (do something
that impacts people and/or the world)
Sample Purpose Statement: My purpose is to use my natural optimism and friendly
demeanor to positively impact the life of every person I meet, and promote a culture of
