ABSTRACT An abstract is usually one or two paragraphs that summarize the major components of the paper in the following sequence:  The question(s) you investigated (or purpose), (from Introduction) (i)  State the purpose very clearly in the first or second sentence. The experimental design and methods used, (from Methods) (i) Clearly, express the basic design of the study. (ii) Name or briefly describe the basic methodology used without going into excessive detail-be sure to indicate the key techniques used.   The major findings including key quantitative results, or trends (from Results) (i) report those results which answer the questions you were asking (ii) identify trends, relative change or differences, etc. A brief summary of your interpretations and conclusions. (from Discussion) (i) clearly, state the implications of the answers your results gave you. I. INTRODUCTION  What is the project about?  Why is this an important research question?  How will you analyze this issue? Even though the introduction is at the beginning of the project, one cannot write the final introduction without completing the literature review and methodology. It is generally one of the last sections of the project that the researcher completes. The introduction should move from Page |5 outlining the broad context of the project to narrowly focusing on the research problem. The researcher may cite other studies that are relevant to this project to justify the relevance of the project. However, the researcher does not evaluate other studies in the introduction. The introduction should contain the following sections A. Industry Profile A detailed description of the industry. The industry profile provides history and evolution of the industry, as well as the future direction of the industry. Students should examine industry leaders, elements affecting the industry, and the overall performance of the industry. B. Background of the problem The background of the problem is generally discussed before the problem statement because it provides context to the readers so that they may gain an appropriate perspective of the problem. Elements to include in the background of the study are:  Predominant problem areas in the industry/field that are fundamental to the problem statement.  Empirical data presented in extant literature that demonstrate the need for further research to solve the existing business problem.  Themes and perspectives in the existing literature that inform the decision to focus on the specific business problem. C. Problem Statement The problem statement provides a brief description of the problem your research project will address. Essentially, the problem statement highlights the current negative situation and explains the importance of the problem. You should be able to apply the 5 Ws (Who, What, Where, Page |6 When and Why) to the problem statement. The problem statement should not exceed 250 words. Also, please ensure that you select a business related problem. D. Rationale/Purpose of Study A rationale typically consists of a line of reasoning that performs two principal functions. It describes a context within which to locate the intended project and suggests why doing such a study is worthwhile. A further function can be that of justifying the methods you plan to use for solving your research problem. E. Objectives of study In general, research objectives describe what we expect to achieve by a project. Research objectives may be linked with a hypothesis or used as a statement of purpose in a study that does not have a hypothesis. F. Nature of Study Nature of study It identifies key characteristics and attributes of a product or service through individual interviews or group discussions (qualitative research) and it analyzes these attributes by statistical analysis of answers given in a structured set of questions such as a survey or questionnaire (quantitative research) G. Significance of Study Essentially, the significance of the study provides information to the reader on the contribution of the study. It must specifically state what the study will contribute and who will benefit from it. Students may start with the general contribution to society as a whole then proceed to highlight the contribution to individual stakeholders. H. Contribution of study to improvements in business practice Page |7 The intent is to align scholarly work with real-world business activities. The researcher must simplify complex organizational issues of the empirical world on the basis of understanding, explanations, and predictions in the business environment. As such, the researcher must clearly indicate the positive impact/contribution of the study on the alleviation or elimination of the business problem. I. Delimitations Delimitations are choices made by the researcher which should be mentioned. They describe the boundaries that you have set for the study. This is the place to explain by the researcher: the things that he is not doing (and why he has chosen not to do them) II. REVIEW OF LITERATURE  What do we already know about this issue? (What have others said and provided evidence for?) The purpose of the literature review is to discuss the published information in the subject area. The researcher justifies his or her research by examining what is agreed and what is contested in the subject area. Essentially, the literature review provides context to the study. The researcher must identify relevant literature (not older than five years before the year of graduation) that contains the most relevant theory or concept on the topic, along with the methods, findings, and conclusions. The researcher follows an organized pattern in the literature review and combines both summary and synthesis. Strategies for writing the Literature Review Find a focus- The researcher identifies his or her argument and develops a guide for gathering the evidence to support the evidence. Consider what themes connect all the sources. Examine whether the sources have similar or different solutions. Note the following: Page |8  Theories most used in the literature  The Common assumptions found in the literature  The Common methods used in the literature  Areas where authors agree or disagree  Do other authors share your perspective on the topic?  How has the literature on the problem evolved in the last five recent years?  How has each scholar contributed with their work—are they the first to apply a particular method, first to survey a particular group, first to make a particular argument, and by doing so, how have they advanced the debate on the subject for more effective solutions?  Are the existing solutions in the literature practical? Hubbuch, 2004 suggested one strategy for identifying trends and patterns in the literature as seen below. In your evaluation of the literature, you should evaluate content for its application to your project. Organize the Literature- The researcher must determine the most effective way to present the information. For example, what are the main topics? What are the sub-topics? Like all academic Page |9 papers, the literature review must include an introduction; the body, where the researcher discusses the sources; and a conclusion. Organizing the body of the literature review is critical because it allows the researcher to present the overall framework of the project. The sources may be organized either chronologically, thematically, or methodologically. Regardless of the method you choose to organize the information, you must ensure that the information is relevant to your research project. III. METHODOLOGY  How will you examine this issue? In this section, the researcher outlines how he/she will examine the business problem. The researcher expands on the method he/she mentioned in the purpose of the study. He/she provides a detailed description of the actions taken to investigate the research problem. He/She also provide justification for applying certain procedures and techniques used in the research process. Basically, the methodology section provides the response to two important questions: a. How the data was collected, b. How was the data analyzed? The researcher uses direct language and the section must be written in past tense. IV. FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS  What are the main findings of the study? The research goals generally guide the findings of the study. You will put the findings into perspective by comparing the results of what you expected and what is found in the literature. V.
