Your post must include reference to the Altimeter report to support your opinions. You are encouraged to refer to other readings from the module as well. I want your educated opinion on an issue relevant to the industry or a digital marketing project that is new, interests you and is relevant to the module we are discussing. Your entry should include a brief summary of the issue/project and your interpretation of it. This is the type of analysis that any new employee might be asked to attempt. Consider this as you research and write your entry. Write professionally. Spell check. Use good sources, and cite them. Use links back to blogs and news sources that you use. Include multimedia where appropriate. Feel free to write in a conversational and informed style. Module: Web 2.0 and 3.0 Overview: We continue our overview of where digital media fit into marketing today by considering the present and looking into the future by beginning to read about Web 2.0 and Web 3.0, with a particular focus on marketing of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.. As you work through the module, think about your brand for the digital branding project. Where would it fall on the continuum from Web 1.0 --> Web 2.0 --> Web 3.0? As we shall see, there is no commonly accepted definition for any Web x.0 stage so most of the readings will resort to definition by example, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Read: What is Web 2.0 (Links to an external site.) Written by Michael O’Reilly back in 2005, this is a great starting point for us to understand the differences between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. Primarily relying on comparisons between the business models of Web 1.0 companies with their Web 2.0 counterparts, this is definitely not a marketing article, per se. Instead, he identifies core competencies of Web 2.0 companies and shows where Web 1.0 companies failed or were forced to change their business models. It is interesting to note that DoubleClick, a company that OReilly characterizes as Web 1.0 and that he compares with Google, was bought in 2008 by Google. Although DoubleClick might have been shortsighted in the way they estimated the online market for its ad serving services, Google clearly saw some value in its technology that enabled advertisers to publish ads on some of the largest online advertising properties. One important Web 2.0 characteristic is referred to as the long tail. Check out this very helpful little slideshow (Links to an external site.) (the six images that you will find at the bottom of the page--its called Now Playing: Every Movie Ever Made) about the concept that is part of an article by Chris Anderson, former editor of Wired, who also wrote a book on the subject. He used to write a blog about the long tail, but moved on to other things in late 2009. Check out how the Long Tail plays out in the travel industry-Grabbing Travels Long Tail (Links to an external site.). A great way to further examine the long tail concept is to compare online music subscription services. Search for one of your favorite musicians or bands in Amazons Prime Music (Links to an external site.), then search for that same artist on Napster or Spotify. Which platform(s) does a better job encouraging you to further explore artists that you may not be aware of? Some of the best Web 2.0 services are constantly refining their recommendation engines. Read: Web 2.0 Five Years On (Links to an external site.) In 2009, O’Reilly and John Battelle, who helped launch Wired and The Industry Standard, returned to the topic. In this essay, the authors explore new characteristics of Web 2.0 and, I would argue, perhaps Web 3.0. Some of the more recent projects developed by Amazon are helpful to understanding some of the more abstract and theoretical concepts introduced by O’Reilly and Battelle. In 2014, they filed for a patent to ship goods before you have placed an order. Check out the TechCrunch article (Links to an external site.) about this and look at the variables that they analyze to make these predictions. More recently, Amazon has been pushing the envelope with the Dash Button (Links to an external site.) (is that 2.0? 3.0?) and Alexa (Links to an external site.), who may want to take over your home. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Is Alexa listening (Links to an external site.) even when she hasnt been summoned? Think about the takeaways and lessons from the two O’Reilly articles that make Amazon’s projects Web 2.0, or even Web 3.0, projects. This modules Altimeter Report, The State of the Internet of Things in the Home , suggests we are in the earliest of stages where most consumers see the value and convenience in IoT technologies. The report discusses the motivations, priorities and frustrations of several national and international market segments of current and future IoT consumers, and concludes with a product opportunity analysis across different categories. Despite the promise of IoT, theres still a sense that manufacturers dont understand how to appeal to consumers with Web 2.0/3.0 technologies. Take a look at this coverage of the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show. Where better, perhaps, to get a glimpse of products and projects that might have Web 3.0 qualities? Alas, we still have a ways to go according to this VentureBeat report: Why some of techs greatest minds are still missing the Internet of Things picture (Links to an external site.). Nonetheless, there are many that believe the Internet of Things, which appears to be the new catchphrase for Web 2.0/3.0, is on the verge of transforming the way marketers will reach out, learn about and interact with consumers. Read these three different accounts about how this might play out: - The Next Great Social Marketing Opportunity: The Internet of Things (Links to an external site.) - How the Internet of Things Is Changing Online Marketing (Links to an external site.) - The 2 Phases of Internet of Things and Marketing (Links to an external site.) Lastly, heres a great resource to stay on top of this topic. MediaPost recently began publishing a daily newsletter called the AI and IoT Daily (Links to an external site.). It was formerly just called the IoT Daily--that gives you some idea of how important AI has become for marketers. Its a pretty impressive resource for all things Web 3.0. ...
