You want to tell your reader something about the research in this area that has come before yours AND how your research is going to extend it. • It helps to start by making a general statement about the amount research on your topic such as “There is a limited/extensive body of research that has examined ….” Rationale for Proposed Study • Then make some general statement(s) about the research in the area and cite a few studies that back up that statement. – If a study is much like yours, you can describe it in some detail if it helps understand why you are doing your study. (just don’t write all detail on the slide) – Be sure to present some examples of studies (2-3) that speak to and justify your hypothesis. • If you have no studies that directly look at what you are proposing to do, mention a few studies that help you justify your hypotheses • Conclude this section by summary of the results that the literature seems to show • Examples: – The results of research are consistent in showing that depression is related to self-esteem. – The results are mixed – some studies show effects and some do not. • End this section with a statement about a gap or limitation in the literature THAT YOUR STUDY SEEKS TO ADDRESS! Purpose of the Proposed Study • Describe the specific purpose of your study and how it addresses this gap or limitation (or otherwise how it advances the literature in the area). Hypotheses OR Research Question(s) • State the Null and Alternative Hypotheses for studies that are testing relationships between two or more variables • If your study is purely descriptive, just say what your research question (s) is. Be specific to your study. (This is your general question, not the questions on your measures) • DO NOT state both a hypo and a research question. Method • Participants – Describe expected participants in terms of # of particpatns and major type of characteristics expected (age, gender, ethnicity, from where?); remember to characterize them specifically (most will be XX but will also include students who are XX and XX; they wil range in age from XX to XX0. – Where will they will be recruited; what will you say to them about the study you are asking them to participate in? – If you will be screening people to determine eligibility for your study, explain how they will be screen and who will be excluded. – Mention if they will be compensated. Method • Instruments – Make sure that you document how EVERY variable is assessed. This includes variables you collect to describe your participants in the participant section (often called demographic variables) • A demographic questionnaire can be written by you but be sure to say what variables it will include. You will also need to have that measure for your final paper. Method • Instruments (continued) – For EACH measure: • state the name of the instrument, and give the original citation for it if there is one. • describe its length (# of questions), the responses options given to person to pick from; and an example or two of a question • Describe how the measure is scored to arrive at your variable – how do you arrive at a total (and possibly subscale) score (e.g. re items responses simply added up?), and say what the possible of range of scores for the measure is. • Describe the reliability and validity of scores (and by subscale if you will look at subscales) (give cites for these if they are different from those in reported in original article describing the measure). Method • Procedure – Explain step by step what a participant has to do beginning with how they sign consent, what they do to participate in data collection – Give a REALISTIC estimate of how long it will take to complete your study. – If you are going to debrief participants, thank them and/or give them an incentive, state how that will be done. – Remember you want to give enough info to audience so they can replicate. But be to the point and brief. Method • Proposed Analyses – Describe what descriptive statistics will be calculated – Describe the inferential statistics you will use to teach EACH hypothesis – (If you don’t know now we will work on this during the first week of class before the presentations) Conclusion • Say something about how you think this study will be of benefit (to research literature, theory and/or practical value).
