Writing Assignment #1
Critical Annotated Bibliography
of Five Sources
Summary of assignment
•
Task: In this assignment you will write a list of at least 5 sources in alphabetical order in
APA format. In addition, each reference will be followed by a short analytical summary
of 150-200 words. At the end of the short summary, you will include a sentence or two
that critically analyzes the source and that mentions distinctive features about the article
and why it may or may not be useful for you in pursuing more research.
•
•
•
Length: Each annotation should be 150-200 words.
Format: APA
Sources: Five sources, all of which you fill find through UMUC’s OneSearch
o All of your articles should be from scholarly journals or credible trade journals.
They should not be from popular journals.
Strategies in Selecting a Topic for your Annotated Bibliography
You may select a topic of your choice. However, when selecting a topic, keep in mind that it
should be a topic on which a number of studies or scholarly articles have been published.
Examples of topics students have chosen in the past or that would be workable for this
assignment are the following:
•
•
•
The impact of the Internet on research methods of students and plagiarism in student
papers
The impact of The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act on primary school education
The impact of mobile devices on cybersecurity
Overall, in considering a topic, you might consider your major, topics that will be covered in
future classes you plan to take at UMUC, and your interests.
For example, please examine the following ideas:
•
If your major is criminal justice, you might consider researching the different types of CSI effects that have
been explored in the literature or researching what studies have noted about body cameras for law
enforcement officials.
•
•
•
•
If your major is psychology, you might consider researching counseling strategies, consumer behavior in
online shopping, decision-making in upper-management positions, etc.
If your major is history, you might consider researching theories on the Civil War, studies on labor patterns
in the United States, an aspect of military history, etc.
If your major is social science, you might consider researching community responses to health care threats,
co-parenting patterns after divorce, etc.
If your major is cybersecurity, you might consider researching different studies that analyze the training of
employees on cyber issues or researching the Agile and Waterfall methods of project development.
Whatever topic you consider, keep in mind that it should be a topic on which a number of
studies or scholarly articles have been published. You will conduct all or most of your
research using UMUC’s OneSearch function in finding scholarly articles or articles from
credible trade journals.
Approach
This assignment will be an analytical/critical/ annotated bibliography. The difference between
the descriptive/informative annotated bibliography and the analytical/critical annotated
bibliography is explained in the following video:

Bell, J., Byron, G., Gibson, A., & Morris, A. (2004). A pilot study of buprenorphine - naloxone
combination tablet (Suboxone®) in treatment of opioid dependence. Drug and Alcohol
Review, 23(3), 311-317. doi:10.1080/09595230412331289473
This research study tested whether or not Suboxone could aid in the successful treatment
of opioid addiction without supervised administration of the medication. The study
explains how before the release of Suboxone, medication therapy for heroin addiction has
involved supervised administration of any prescribed drug used for treatment purposes.
Test subjects for this study consisted of highly stable patients that required only weekly
appointments for monitoring. All participants were switched from their regular
medication of buprenorphine to the combination medication of buprenorphine and
naloxone, also known as Suboxone. The study found that unsupervised administration of
Suboxone could be useful in treating opioid addiction but in a select group of patients.
Despite having a low number of test subjects recruited to participate, the study was wellresearched with consistent data. Because the study was able to demonstrate the efficacy
of Suboxone for treating opioid dependence, it would be relevant to research regarding
the impact Suboxone has on the treatment of opiate dependency.

dependence within the context of the UK drug strategy: Methadone and Suboxone
(buprenorphine–naloxone) patients compared. Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment,
44(1), 97-102. doi:10.1016/j.jsat.2012.04.003
This study compares the effectiveness of Suboxone and methadone for treating opiate
dependence and aiding in a patient’s journey to recovery. There were a total of 109 study
participants that were administered either Suboxone or methadone over an eight-month

maintenance treatment period. Findings showed that both medications were highly
effective for promoting abstinence from heroin use with a higher number of Suboxone
patients remaining abstinent from heroin than those on methadone. Although the study
was successful in showing the efficacy of Suboxone and methadone for treating opiate
dependence, the study warns that its participants were not randomized to medication.
Because participants were not randomized to medication administration, the study states
that results are indefinite and require a second study consisting of a randomized
controlled trial for comparison of results. This study provides context on treating heroin
addiction with Suboxone and therefore is relevant to research on the impact Suboxone
has on the treatment of opioid dependency.

Project: Can Suboxone be a viable outpatient option for heroin addiction? Journal of
Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives, 4(2), 22902.
doi:10.3402/jchimp.v4.22902
This project focused on testing whether or not Suboxone could be used as an efficient
alternative to methadone for outpatient treatment of heroin addiction. A total of 220
inpatient test subjects were recruited and then stared on Suboxone therapy before being
discharged from the hospital. Once released from the hospital, study participants were
monitored through weekly outpatient visits that involved maintenance therapy and
counseling. Findings indicated that Suboxone was an applicable form of treatment for
heroin addiction in an outpatient setting. The study does suggest using some type of
counseling in conjunction with Suboxone to address any mental health issues related to a
patient’s drug use. This study was easily comprehensible and provided its readers with

compelling, well-written research. The study was useful as it gives a detailed list
describing the advantages of treating opiate addiction with Suboxone. Because the
primary focus of this study was treating heroin addiction with Suboxone in an outpatient
setting, study data would be relevant to research on the impact of Suboxone on treating
opioid dependency.
Sullivan, J. G., & Webster, L. (2015). Novel Buccal Film Formulation of BuprenorphineNaloxone for the Maintenance Treatment of Opioid Dependence: A 12-Week Conversion
Study. Clinical Therapeutics, 37(5), 1064-1075. doi:10.1016/j.clinthera.2015.02.027
This study was performed to test the safety, effectiveness, and treatment acceptance of
using buprenorphine-naloxone for treating opioid dependence. Study volunteers were
required to be stabilized on a dose of sublingual buprenorphine-naloxone to participate in
the research. Data was collected over 12 weeks on a total of 249 opioid dependent test
subjects who were administered buprenorphine-naloxone in the form of a buccal film.
The effectiveness of controlling withdrawal symptoms with the buccal form of the
medication was measured using the Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale, otherwise known
as the COWS scale. Study results showed that the buccal film form of buprenorphinenaloxone was well-tolerated and effective in controlling withdrawal symptoms in test
subjects. Researches from this study did warn that all recorded results should be viewed
as introductory due to the open-label design of the study, rather than a blind study.
Because this study evaluated patients taking buprenorphine-naloxone to treat opioid
dependency, results would be relevant towards research on the impact that Suboxone has
on the treatment of opiate dependency.

Journal of Substance Use, 16(3), 171-178. doi:10.3109/14659891.2010.526480
This study focused on gathering information that compared the efficacy of Suboxone
against methadone as a form of treatment for opioid dependence. Study participants who
had taken Suboxone, methadone or both medications were interviewed to find out which
treatment method they preferred and how satisfied they were with the medication. Test
subjects were asked to describe both the strengths and weaknesses of the medication they
were administered. Results showed that participants reported a more positive experience
in treating their opioid dependence with Suboxone rather than methadone. Results also
emphasized the importance of complimenting medication therapy with some form of
psychosocial therapy to increase the likelihood of successful treatment. This study was
easily understandable and provided a large amount of information regarding different
kinds of medication therapy available to treat opiate addiction. The report from this
study would be relevant for research on the impact Suboxone has on the treatment of
opioid dependence, as it compares the effectiveness of treating patients with Suboxone,
as well as gives a thorough explanation on how Suboxone works in the human body.
