Should all public schools require a standard school uniform?
The issue surrounding school uniforms have been controversial. For decades now, private
schools have been the pioneer of school uniforms, and this has contributed to the increased heat
regarding public schools’ adoption of school uniforms. Many religious institutions have not been
left behind in regards to wearing school uniforms as, according to them, it is mandatory to wear
one when going to school as a symbol of uniformity.
Being a concept that is successful in the religious and private schools, the need for school
uniforms in public schools has emerged, and this has sparked debates on the essence of introducing
the uniforms, as some are opposed to the idea while others are in its support. There are enormous
advantages of school uniforms, such as reducing bullying, crime, and other social inequalities in
school, but at the same time increases the parents’ expenditure on clothing since the uniforms are
expensive.
One of the significant advantages of wearing school uniforms in public schools is that it
reduces bullying among students, especially in high schools (Sanchez et al.). A majority of the high
school students are adolescents who base their image on looks. Wearing school uniforms means
that every student is equal to the others, and this minimizes the worries of choosing the best outfit
to wear to school, which in turn reduces bullying. The gap between the rich and the poor is widened
Surname 2
by the outfits worn, with the rich wearing classy and fancy clothing which cannot be afforded by
the poor and middle-class families. With the introduction of uniforms, all students are made equal
and thus reduces the chances of bullying.
Another benefit of wearing school uniforms is that it reduces criminal behaviors as it acts as
a deterrence to crime (Wilson). With reduced crime among the students, it implies that student
safety will increase. It is easy to identify students according to the uniform worn and associate the
student with a particular school, and this is the most important thing. Since the students are not
dressed in any outfits, they may be barred from committing criminal behaviors as they are
exceptional from the general public, and this increases their safety in case something that threatens
their security happens.
Opponents of wearing school uniforms argue that wearing school uniforms minimizes the
students’ freedom of expression (McNeal). According to the United States Constitution, every
citizen has the right to express themselves freely. Students are among the United States citizens,
and therefore they are protected by the constitution regarding self-expression. Forcing students to
adopt a certain conventional standard is not seen as a justifiable part of the educational process,
and the same applies to wearing school uniforms.
Clothes have been long used as a way of expression by students, and thus allowing the
students to wear clothes of their choice empowers them to communicate a particular message. One
of the messages is that the students are a maturing population who are entitled to the most basic
self-determination. Different clothing symbolizes different expressions, such as wearing a pink
shirt is a way of indicating support for breast cancer awareness, which cannot be achieved when
the students are forced to wear uniforms.
Surname 3
Based on the above facts, wearing school uniforms is not necessary as it is not a measure,
and neither is it an ingredient to academic excellence. Wearing a school uniform does not mean
that a student will pass the exams in flying colors and thus not justifiable. Besides, bullying does
not only emanate from clothing but also in academic performance, among other issues in schools,
and therefore claiming that it reduces bullying is an unsubstantiated claim. The constitution
protects everyone in the United States in regards to self-expression, and thus forcing students to
wear a particular uniform is against the freedom of expression and thus a violation of the United
States Constitution. Therefore, it is of less significance, forcing students to wear school uniforms.
