Lit 200 Spring 2020: Quiz 1: Due 1.16 11:59 PM
This quiz rewards literally free pts for reading the syllabus. Believe me, I know your
syllabi here are full of what seem like irrelevant policies, but in the midst of these are
important personal notes by me.
*Also, if you won’t be in class Thursday, I need you to complete this before class that
day, because I need to count First Day Attendance then, since obviously I didn’t today.

Welcome!
Hiya. You can call me James. I’m super excited to teach this class and really hope
you enjoy it. Feel free
to help me out teaching, since the subject (weird Millenial /Gen Z media) is much
more you than me.

University Course Description
The nature and significance of literature in its various forms: fiction, drama, poetry;
emphasis on
techniques in literary studies for analyzing, assessing, and applying the linguistic
and cultural dimensions
of knowledge.
III.
Course Purpose
In this class, we will be exploring texts of the contemporary Anglophone world, and
interrogate how
they mediate and reflect upon 1) emerging technologies/the information revolution;
and 2) notions of
community, class, gender, and ethnicity (among other things). By text we
primarily—via the course
catalog—denote novels, poems, and dramas, but we will also augment these
studies by looking at digital
poetry, TED Talks, movies, commercials, Insta, Twitter, Emojis, Memes, podcasts,
Snapchat, YouTube
ads, sub-Reddits and other staples of the online world we live through.
Even though we will be working with a lot of non-textual subjects, this remains a
literature course and
you will be doing tons of writing, from weekly response posts to class progress
notes, suggestions for
the syllabus, peer review, and 3 papers approximately 4-6 pp. each.

XIII. Course Policies: Grades
Late Work Policy
: Yes, I accept late work. When in doubt, always submit something, however late.
There will be point penalties obviously but anything is bettter than a 0\%. NOTE:
Response posts,
because the entire point is for a discussion, cannot be late simply because nobody
will read your
stuff if it’s late.
Extra Credit Policy
: I provide a 24 hr extension if you go to the Writing Center.
http://www.lib.usf.edu/writing/, stop by LIB 2
nd
Floor, or call 813-974-8293.
Diversity and Inclusion Policy:
At its best, the study of literature should foster greater curiosity and
empathy toward others. This classroom should be a safe space for a diversity of
voices and perspectives,
and the course aims to address the distinctive learning needs of all students.
Respect for others is imperative. This class asks you to challenge and discuss your
current thinking with
others. You will participate respectfully in these discussions, whether written,
spoken, or submitted
online. Disparaging or disrespectful comments or behavior directed at another’s
gender, race, sexual
orientation, religious beliefs, class, identity, etc. are unacceptable.
Grades of Incomplete
: An “I” grade may be awarded to a student only when a small portion of
the student’s work is incomplete and only when the student is otherwise earning a
passing grade.
The time limit for removing the “I” is to be set by the instructor of the course. For
undergraduate
students, this time limit may not exceed two academic semesters, whether or not the
student is in
residence, and/or graduation, whichever comes first. For graduate students, this
time limit may
not exceed one academic semester. “I” grades not removed by the end of the time
limit will be
changed to “IF” or “IU,” whichever is appropriate.
