Earth Overshoot Day Definition
“Earth Overshoot Day, previously known as Ecological Debt Day,
is the calculated illustrative calendar date on which humanitys
resource consumption for the year exceeds Earth’s capacity to
regenerate those resources that year.”
Welcome to Environmental
Studies!
What is Environmental Studies?
What do you think?
• What is the current “state” of the planet?
• What is our role on earth?
• What is our “long-term” plan for
sustainability?
• Do we have an obligation to other living
things?
• Do we have an obligation to future
generations?
• Where do you stand?
Environmental Studies is….
• The study of humans & their relationship to
the Earth’s Systems - ecosystem services
• Human impact Includes:
– Social
– Political
– Economical
– Cultural
– Biological
What are Ecosystem Services?
Those natural processes and systems
that sustain life on earth
Life support systems
Life on earth is dependent on:
One way flow of energy from the sun
Cycling of nutrients
What are ecosystem services?
Ecosystem Services
• Earth’s cycles:
– Nutrient cycling
includes:
• Carbon cycle
• Nitrogen cycle
– Photosynthesis
– Soil formation
How are we dependent on
trees and other producers?
What are Ecosystem Services?
• Earth’s cycles:
• Hydrologic cycle
– Ground water
– Surface water
How long could we survive
without water?
What are Ecosystem Services?
• Greenhouse effect
Earth’s atmosphere
– Greenhouse Effect - a natural “heat trap”
– Ozone Layer - filters out harmful ultraviolet (u.v.) light
Earth’s Biodiversity
• Scientists estimate possibly 30 to 50 million
species on Earth
• Greatest diversity in tropical regions
Biodiversity in the US
Earth’s Biodiversity
• Current extinction rate is 1 to 1000 species per
day
• Greatest extinction rate in the history of the
Earth
Human Impact on Earth Services
• As Populations Grow:
– More resources needed
• Clean Water
• Clean Air
• Food
• Shelter
– More pollution and
waste
– More Disease
No New Frontiers
• Humans inhabit most of
Earth’s land surface
• Consumption of resources
grows
• Environmental degradation
becomes a global problem
• Less fertile soil to grow food
• Ecological resources become
taxed
• Items cost more to buy
• Poor are left out- Social equity
• Cycle of poverty is a
worldwide problem
High Waste Society
• Little or no emphasis on
pollution prevention,
recycling, reuse, reduction
of unnecessary waste and
other forms of resource
conservation
How long can Earth’s resources
sustain us at the current rate of
consumption?
3 Types of Resources
• Perpetual
– The sun
• Renewable
– Sun, Wind, Water, Trees
• Non renewable
– Oil, Coal, Minerals
Human Systems
• Resource consumption and Energy use
greatest in United States, Western European
Nations and Japan
• U.S. represents 5\% of world population BUT,
• Utilize about 25\% of the world’s natural
resources
• A child born in the U.S. has a far greater
impact than a child born in India
Human Systems
• The way we live our life has an impact:
– Energy consumption
•
•
•
•
Coal
Oil
Natural Gas
Uranium (nuclear power)
– Impacts all Earth’s processes & cycles
– Manufactured goods- Packaging, waste
– Pollution
Human Systems
• Almost every environmental problem is
associated with energy production,
distribution and consumption
Where do we go from here?
• Adopt a new world ethic and worldview
– Adopt an ethic that considers the long term impact of our
lifestyle choices on the planet
– Value ecological integrity
– Value the quality of ALL life, not just human life
– Puts as much value on the environment as it does on the
economy
– Live sustainably
What is a sustainable system?
• Ability of a system to survive for some specific
(finite) time by managing resources efficiently
• Sustainable system: A system that attains its full
expected lifetime
• What is our current timeline based on how we
use resources?

Sustainable Society
• A society that manages its
economy & population size
without doing irreparable
environmental harm by
overloading Earth’s ability
to absorb environmental

of years

Breaking our dependence on oil
• Nonrenewable Energy
Resource use is not a
sustainable choice!
• Millions of years required to
generate coal, oil, natural
gas & uranium reserves
Do we continue to utilize all
known reserves regardless
of its impact on future
generations?
• Renewable Energy
Resources are a sustainable
choice!
• Renewables includes solar
and wind energy, and
hydrogen fuel cells
• Energy efficiency - “doing
more with less!”
Call to Action!
• Do you think this is important to our future?
• What about future generations?
– Do they deserve what we have today?
• So what if we cause a species of bird to go
extinct? There are thousands more- What
difference does it make?
• Do you think one person can make a
difference?
• What will YOU DO?
ES 1- HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT # 2
ROEDER- WINTER 2020- 10 TOTAL POINTS FOR EACH QUESTION= 40 POINTS TOTAL
As humans, we consume products every day. Those products are made from resources extracted from
the earth. As global populations grow, the amount of resources available to support life on earth are
under siege. As you learned in week 1, some of those resources we use can’t replenish themselves faster
than we will use them. The manufacturing, transportation, packaging and disposal of the things we buy
create a number of environmental issues. We deplete precious earth resources and pollute the planet
in many ways. Please answer the following questions using the resources on the class website. I am
expecting a STRONG PARAGRAPH for each answer you provide.
1)
From the Lecture, “Ecosystem Services and the Three Types of Resources”, what is the
difference between non renewable resources and renewable resources? Why is it important we
understand the difference?
2) From the Lecture, “Ecosystem Services and the Three Types of Resources, Explain the
Sustainability Triangle, or Triple Bottom Line of Sustainability. Explain the importance of the
inter-relationship between People, Planet and Profit
3) After watching the video and looking at the lecture on , “Earth Overshoot Day”, EXPLAIN IN A
STRONG PARAGRAPH three ways society can start to push Earth Overshoot Day back toward
December 31
4) In the video, “Earth Provides Resources”, what are some of the economic and environmental
justice issues associated with resources being distributed unevenly across the globe? What
issues does that cause and to whom?
