10-1 Discussion: Review, Reflect and Look Ahead - Humanities
In this course, we have examined public policy and theories of criminology and evidence-based practices (EBP) and how these concepts are being used and applied across the spectrum of the criminal justice system in the United States. In your initial post, reflect on the following questions using the knowledge you have gained in this course:Can our society adjust to the use of EBP as a foundation for decision making by the actors within the criminal justice system? Or is this just a “fad”?Can a country like the United States, which has more of its population incarcerated than any other nation, feel comfortable and safe incarcerating fewer people and instead using EBP to cater to the needs of specific inmates? Can society take that risk? Can law enforcement rethink policing and police based on evidence and not tradition? Can courts view “justice” with an evidence-based foundation? When responding to your classmates’ posts, share your views on their comments and point out how you agree or disagree with their positions. If you disagree, challenge their conclusions. Further, in what ways will the positions taken by your classmates affect the future state of public policy in the United States? Cite examples from your research in the course.Responses to respond are attached.

Can our society adjust to the use of EBP as a foundation for
decision making by the actors within the criminal justice
system? Or is this just a “fad”?
Our society can adjust to the use of evidence-based practices as a foundation of decision making
by criminal justice actors. The use of EBP can help to improve the way crimes being processed
and ensure that criminal justice organizations are paying more attention to evidence received.
EBP is not a fad and is gaining popularity among criminal justice departments.
Can a country like the United States, which has more of its
population incarcerated than any other nation, feel comfortable
and safe incarcerating fewer people and instead using EBP to
cater to the needs of specific inmates? Can society take that
risk?
With the way society is today, it would be a huge risk for society to cater to the needs of specific
inmates unless those inmates are proven to not pose a threat. As we continue to explore the usage
of EBP, eventually the comfort level may increase, and we will possibly see a decline in
incarceration.
Can law enforcement rethink policing and police based on
evidence and not tradition?
Law enforcement should combine policing based on evidence and tradition. What law
enforcement officials did twenty or thirty years ago can possibly help with cases, but the
evidence presented will be what brings criminals to justice.
Can courts view “justice” with an evidence-based foundation?
Courts can view justice with an evidence-based foundation because the evidence gathered will
have the proper protocols followed to ensure that all information provided for the case is valid.

I believe our society can adjust to evidence based practices as a
factor for decision making and I believe it will become a
requirement due to lawsuits and more people have access to
internet and are able to research law and policy.
I believe that the United States is leaning towards less
incarceration and more solutions such as rehabilitation.
I believe it may take some years for policing and police to start
to use evidence based practices as its main policing but do feel
that currently they are using both traditional and evidence based
practices on a case by cases basis.
I believe courts use evidence based foundations as well as
previous cases to refer to when making decisions.
