Growing up in a large, close-knit, multigenerational family, my personal inspiration and
career aspirations were largely formed by my uncle, a scholar and civil servant, and by my
entrepreneurial parents. My uncle taught me my earliest lessons on how business and marketing
work and my parents gave me the inspiration for my career goals. My uncle used his business
acumen, marketing talent, and political savvy to open a Mahogany Market in the Zhejiang
Province of China, bringing many jobs to the local people and enabling them to realize their
dreams. Because of him, our small village developed into a large, prosperous town, and through
this experience, I began to realize the power of marketing.
My keen interest in marketing continued to develop during my undergraduate studies. I
believe that the academic knowledge and skills I have gained from my education experience,
extracurricular activities and internships have paved the way for my further study. During my
four years of undergraduate study in University of California, San Diego, I majored in
communication and I also took classes in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, project
management and business analytics, which helped me build a concrete foundation for doing
more advanced research-based and applied marketing. My two biggest projects involved pitching
a large corporation for sponsorship of a horse racing event in Del Mar and developing a plan for
E-sport fan con for the elderly. I learned to determine areas of potential cost reduction, program
improvement, and policy change. This research gave me a better understanding of the way
markets operate for consumers with disposable income and the global implications of successful
marketing techniques. I had the opportunity to work with a professor who is a corporate CEO of
SMRI consulting company and who was able to give our research team first-hand insight into
how the corporation can interact with the community in a more symbiotic manner. I also learned
how to prepare budgets for approval, including those for funding and implementation of
programs.
In addition to the accumulation of theoretical knowledge, I got my practical skills
improved through my internship experience. After the professors recommendation, I entered the
SMRI consulting company for an internship. The department I entered was in charge of
marketing, which direct or coordinate an organization’s financial or budget activities to fund
operations, maximize investments, or increase efficiency. In order to ensure the accuracy of data,
I went to the site of an event which held in LA coliseum with my colleagues and conducted a
public opinion survey. By knowing people’s age, race and living area, I analyzed the feasibility
of such activities and audience groups through their satisfaction with the activities.
To build on my undergraduate experience in communications, I would like to apply for
your school’s master program in marketing. My undergraduate study has laid a solid foundation
for me in the areas of research, economics, political science, and business law in addition to mass
communications and multimedia. Through the economic benefit analysis of esport in the
business analytics class I took, I found the great potential of esport. I decided to do the research
on the consumer participation motivation of e-sports activities: from the perspective of selfdetermination theory. My innate talents and skills include communications, media, active
listening, writing, critical thinking, social perspectives, and persuasion. I am proficient in Adobe
Premiere and Adobe Audition, and I want to combine multimedia and marketing to fulfill my
vision of influencing individuals and corporations with vast resources to aid people with very
few educational resources obtain the education they need to also be successful in life.
My long-term goal is to work in financial institution in my hometown, and research on esports industry as well. Together with the skills in communication, teaching, and journalism that
I have learned from my internship and work experience, the rigorous learning and education
received as part of a master’s level marketing program is the key to making that happen.
