write suggestions about an essay for one page - Writing
you need to write some suggestions about this essay for one pageAttached here is the peer review guide--it is intended to give you a sense of how to respond with comments on content and to help guide toward revision, rather than merely correcting, editing, or proofreading (those are included in the last points you might consider when reviewing, especially in terms of how it affects the overall content or clarity). You dont necessarily need to cover every point, but try to offer comments that will substantively help your peers essay/thesis development and paragraph evidence. In many ways, peer review is about reflecting on your own work: as your read others work, it may reveal some issues or give you ideas for your own approaches and revision--and these are certainly pertinent points you may include in your peer review reflection (which you will include at the end of your submitted essay draft). For the peer review reflection, you should discuss how your peers suggestions informed revision and choices for changes you made in your draft, and perhaps to your thesis. You may also discuss how reviewing your peers writing helped you reflect on your own, and what suggestions you made that perhaps you incorporated into your own essay.Peer Review Guide Be sure to note in your messages (whether over email or a chat) to one another any sections in your respective essays where you have questions or problems, or would like your reviewer(s) to focus and make suggestions.1.Please read your peer’s essay twice.
During your first read, please do so closely to get a sense of the writer’s main focus and supporting content. You may make a small notation, checkmark, or question mark where, for example, you find ideas which need clarification—but keep going.
On the second read, you may comment more fully on the general areas you noted in your first read.Does the writer contextualize their topic in the introductory paragraphs (not summarize the film, but rather an example or focused point that illustrates and leads toward the thesis)?Does their thesis include a clear argument—not only for what they will discuss, but also how/why/what they will show through their example points?
2.Make sure each paragraph is focused on the thesis; topic sentences should clearly imply what will be discussed in that paragraph (and how it speaks to the thesis).
Take note of any paragraph (or sentences) which strays from the thesis, seems too generalized or repetitive, or could use more support/description/direction.
3.Ask questions or make suggestions about organization, and further possible examples.
4.Are there areas where the writer might improve transitions between ideas/paragraphs? Paragraphs that might be condensed/combined—or broken into more than one paragraph?5.If there is no conclusion yet, make suggestions for where the writer might be headed, or what they might include. If there is a conclusion: does it provide not only a brief overview or final “appeal,” but projections for the implications of the topic?Hint: the conclusion may refer back to earlier points in the paper, but it should not read the same as the introduction.6.Is the paper MLA formatted? Are citations complete (see syllabus), and quotes appropriately introduced with signal phrases or otherwise integrated into a sentence? If applicable: is the Works Cited page complete and accurate, and includes the proper types of sources?7.Make suggestions to improve grammar, punctuation, or spelling; also take note of informal language, wordy or run-on sentences, or repetition of words or phrases—especially if these issues impede the meaning the writer is trying to convey. 8.In your email responses, summarize your ideas for improving each other’s papers.

The films Wonder Woman and Black Panther, though produced by competing studios
and featuring very different settings and conflicts, both possess deep and resonant progressive
themes that are presented in a way that makes them accessible to general audiences and
which inform the stories of the two heroes. Both films prominently feature women and
people of color in both leading and supporting roles, though with differing prominence, and
each presents a form of social commentary through its narrative. In the case of Wonder
Woman, the film delivers a deeply anti-war, and to an extent anti-military industrial complex
message through a Feminist lens, whereas Black Panther tackles matters of systemic racism
and institutionalized oppression by having them come into contact with a fictional Afrofuturist utopia that has never been forced to endure these kinds of injustices firsthand.
First is Wonder Woman, a film whose plot primarily revolves around Princess Diana of
Themyscira, an ancient and hidden country of powerful warrior women who hide themselves
from the “world of men”. Diana is introduced to the outside world through the character of
Steve Trevor, an American soldier fighting in World War I. Due to Steve’s biased perspective
and her initially hostile interaction with the German soldiers that resulted in the death of a
friend, Diana begins her journey with an extremely simplistic and naïve view of the nature of
the conflict in which she has chosen to involve herself. She believes the cause of the war (and
perhaps war as a whole) to be the manipulation of Ares, and is convinced that if she finds and
kills him, she will be able to resolve the conflict. This narrative is disrupted in a number of
ways throughout the course of the film, beginning with her arrival in the United Kingdom.
Diana’s first glimpse of the injustice of war on both sides is the repulsive condition of the
city of London, which she calls “disgusting”. She sees firsthand the hardships caused by
industrialized society and compounded by war, and begins to understand that neither side
compares to her own idyllic homeland. Her first confrontation with immorality on her own
side is when she confronts a British general for callously suggesting the sacrifice of a large
number of soldiers for a strategic objective. This serves as both a learning point for Diana as
a character as well as a meta commentary on the devaluation of human life in times of war.
The point at which the social commentary in Wonder Woman intersects with the broader
themes of Black Panther is in Diana’s interactions with people of color. In particular, this is
accomplished through her interactions with Sameer and “Chief”. With Sameer, Diana learns
that people of color are not afforded the same opportunities or privileges as their white
counterparts, as he reveals that he wanted to be an actor but had no chance to achieve his
dream due to being “the wrong color”. Her conversation with Chief was more impactful, as
he reveals to her that his culture and people had been wronged by “his [Steve’s] people”.
These themes of racial injustice are further explored and central to Black Panther.
In Black Panther, T’Challa is the heir to the throne of his recently deceased father, the
king of Wakanda. Like Diana, he plays a prominent role in a hidden advanced civilization,
this time an Afro-futurist society that combines enlightened technology and sensibilities with
a tribal African aesthetic and culture. Like Themyscira, Wakanda dislikes the outside world
and goes to great lengths to conceal itself. In a similar way to Diana, T’Challa attempts to
stop what appears to be a straightforward evil from impacting his country. In this case, it is
the South African character “claw” stealing Wakandan technology and harming Wakandan
citizens. However, as the narrative unfolds T’Challa learns more about the injustices
perpetuated against black people around the world, and of how Wakanda has been complicit
in this injustice through its isolationist policies.
The impact of racially charged injustice and systemic oppression is shown mostly
through Killmonger, the villain of the movie. He grew up in extreme poverty as a child and
lost his father to violence at a young age. However, his father’s death was not a direct result
of oppression, but rather Wakanda’s paranoia and unwillingness to help those in need. This is
a statement on both the injustices of the American society that Killmonger grew up in, as well
as the cruelty and selfishness that motivates isolationism in the case of Wakanda. Like Diana,
T’Challa learns over the course of the movie that the conflict he is fighting is not completely
good and evil. In fact, Killmonger’s motivation is directly tied to systemic oppression, as his
plan is to use Wakanda’s power to violently overthrow racist power structures around the
world.
While T’Challa still understands that Killmonger is wrong in his violent approach to
change, he does eventually concede that Wakanda’s policy of secrecy has allowed millions of
people to suffer needlessly, and as a result he declares to his ancestors “All of you were
wrong to turn your backs on the rest of the world!” and makes it clear that he intends to be a
force for good. While he does not end up agreeing with the villain, he does learn from him
and try to understand how he can prevent future conflicts by helping people less fortunate
than him.
Both Wonder Woman and Black Panther revolve around the heroes gaining a greater
understanding of the moral complexity of the world while on their adventures. They both
come to see the flaws and failures of their friends and allies, while still understanding the
need to defeat the villains. While both heroes ultimately accomplish their mission to stop
the ”bad guy” and save the day, they each develop a greater understanding of the world and
the impact of privilege.
