Figure 1 - focus point of this research: Distribution and Logistics Figure 2- SDNS module and specification- focus point the project follows a problem and solution approach, which is defined by the development of the proposed network system by retro allocating and mapping method (based on accurate assumptions). In line with the proposal approach, the aim of this project is to introduce an integrated SDNS for the internal logistic activities within the capital city of Muscat. For this research a sample area (district and subdistrict were selected). As following: Figure 3- BK - Green district: Bousher - Red subdistrict: Khuwair The first approach is to develop service and distribution hubs by evaluating the most efficient mode and key locations for consumers to access those services conveniently. The service hubs: Distribution Centres (DC) is a proposed method of connecting logistic corporations with consumers in a lower cost, those DC’s could range in sizes as per district demand. Where each district will have a major hub (DC2) and a minor customer friendly hub (DC3) that consist of a large warehouse and service front, to ease up the process, storage, and distribution, making it more convenient for Businesses to send, receive and store goods. Figure 4- Bosher,Khuwair BK Area – Yellow square: DC2-BK - Pins : DC3 proposed locations (vary in sizes- small in nature . ex shops or kiosks in petrol stations, malls, common accessible areas) - Red: route and connectivity demonstration from DC2>DC3 Figure 5 - Yellow Box: MCT - Green Box: Proposed DC1-MCT location (airport based DC1 for Airfreight inbounds and outbounds activity) The following table contains a brief explanation of characteristics of the Distribution centre type proposed for this research DC1 • • type: distribution center type 1 - DC1 – port centric (Ex: DC1-MCT) system: - mega scale – joint distribution and sortation warehouse - port centric strategy • • ownership: Omanpost LLC operation: shared via logistic companies and businesses • size: further research would be required on the sizes of such distribution centers + should be the largest one among the DCs - to accommodate all shipments and businesses inbounds (more than 30 companies) • Purpose: allowing businesses to receive their main bulk shipment from sea fright or air freight and further sort, and send their bulk shipments to specific DC2s or company owned warehouses to store and handle. • Outcomes & benefits: refer to the links provided below the tables for more information regarding benefits, processes and outcomes of port centric warehouse strategy. Revenue stream: mainly by renting slots or spaces, and operations. • DC2 • • • Name: distribution center type 2 - DC2 - for a specific district: ex : DC2-BK type/nature: semi-large scale - joint distribution and sortation warehouse operations: shared via logistic companies and businesses • size: further research would be required on the sized of such distribution centers + should also be a large one to accommodate multiple business the DC2 type will be dedicated to a specific district within the capital (5 districts in Muscat). where each DC2 type will allow businesses to further sort DC1 bulk shipments and further send it to a specific DC3 or directly mile end delivery (deliver to customers) receiving returns and customer packages to further sending it to other DC2s for domestic shipping or DC3 for international shipping. in the case when one of the companies got a warehouse: receive returns and customer packages to further sending it to business warehouse for further handling ( for example, customers that wish to send a specific package using DHL services, could post their package using one of DC3s service location, where the package would be picked up from that DC3 and delivered to DC2 by Oman post, for further sortation by the company DHL or to be picked up from DC2 by DHL among other packages collected from various DC3 from that district at that day or period of time. Outcomes & benefits: refer to the links provided for more information regarding benefits, processes and outcomes of this strategy. Revenue stream: mainly by renting slots or spaces + DC3 distribution + mile end delivery. • • • • • DC3 • • • • Name: distribution centre type 3 – DC3 – many points in one district Type/nature: small scale – distribution and collection stores/centres/kiosks. Other types: lockers (such as amazon lockers), petrol station boutiques, mall boutiques) could vary in size and design. Kiosks. Operations: all activities within DC3 outreach are operated by 1 company - Sole operated via Omanpost LLC • Size: varies (typical store 45 m2 shop size) further research from my end would be required to determine number service stations and their sizes and shapes. • Purpose: DC3’s would mainly be customer interaction point. Where customers meet businesses. It’s a sequence or a set of pickup/delivery locations that allows businesses to deliver and receive packages from customers in a convenient way. Customers will also be able to receive and send packages at their convenience through one of those service centres/lockers. DC3 is also responsible for package returns, and customer postage. That are further collected from all DC3 by Omanpost LLC and delivered to DC2’s for further sortation by other companies • • • • Revenue stream: DC3 distribution + mile end delivery + return delivery to DC2. https://www.johngood.co.uk/2017/10/31/port-centric-logistics-definition/ https://www.i-scoop.eu/industry-4-0/supply-chain-management-scm-logistics/ The second approach is to develop a comprehensible dedicated postcode system by dividing the capital city of Muscat into five main districts, where each district is then divided into subdistrict. Following that is the current sub districts abbreviation with the existing house number. In result, the postcode will consist mainly of six to seven characters, with an optional specified eighth character for sub-addresses such as flats, twin villas, and offices. (for postcode samples, please refer to figure 6 + excel file name FP02 – Postcodes, in mail for better understanding) Figure 7- map of Muscat showing the 5 main district - Area shaded in light green is Bousher - the sample area choosen for this research Figure 6- Map of Oman showing the capital city of Muscat Figure 6- District: Bousher - Subdistrict: Khauwair - Subdivided into smaller numerical subs based on road accessibility and road barriers (each sub contains 1 to 99 plot numbers/ postcode) Points of Discussion The main aim of this research project is to develop a supply chain infrastructure that would enable the country Oman (the capital of Muscat) to flourish its logistics capability and to introduce a system I believe would work perfectly if followed that would attract global and local investors, or current existing logistics companies and businesses to outreach their customers in a professional and fast way. current issue in Oman (WHY im doing this ) 1. Oman has conducted it addressing system to the American way, by dividing the country into separate zipcodes for each and every district, and a local post office to facilitate mail services, the post office is called (OmanPost – search for more info). From the start till 2017, the company was owned by the government, and recently has became a private sector.. since its ownership movement in 2017 to be a private company.. Omanpost have introduced different kinds of services to the market, and even facilitate a dedicated intertional shipping address for people wanting to purchase goods online, for example ( they have an address in the USA and UK for that enables customers to ship their product into that address then the company ship it to oman under a scheduled shipment like once a week)… the company introduced such service because most of the online retailers like amazon and ebay do not ship to oman due to the insufficient supply chain infrastructure. 2. Omanpost is currently competing with DHL ARAMEX and UPS by the logistics services provided. Where a survey was conducted ( SEE SURVEY ATTACHMENT ) and it shows how most of the sample class choose to deal with forginer or multinational companies rather then a local one.. which is mainly due to the lack of trust and marketing strategy. Omanpost is the only major logistic service provider in the country, so supporting the company is crucial for the sake of prosperity in local brands and companies 3. Even with companies like DHL and ARAMEX in the Omani market, customers suffer from the long time they wait till their package arrives from, ex, ARAMEX local warehouse to the customers delivery address. It sometimes take more then 7 days. On an average 3-4 days. And that’s mainly because the country doesn’t have a solid addressing system such as dedicated postcodes, that help identifying and allocating houses very efficiently. The current addressing system used in Oman are a combination of 4 different things: way number house number, landmarks, sharing location via whatsapp, and its usually followed by a list of instructions. And yet packages gets misplaced. Therefore, a dedicated postcode sample was conducted for this research purposes. Believing that by having a dedicated postcode, companies could outreach their consumer very quickly and efficiently as compared to the current method. And it also impacts positively on the country’s prosperities of discussion • The country lies on the silk route (currently known as the Belt and Road initiative), its also famous for its antient Martine skills. • the country has recently opened two multifunctional ports and freezone locations to enable and attract foreign investments into the country ( Duqum Port, Port of Suwaiq, Sohar Port) are the three main ports used in Oman. • Postcodes applications and benefits could be applied in various sectors and purposes, such as emergency assistance, police registration, market data evaluation, properties and investments. Etc • Port centric and centralized port systems are used in this research (search for more details on both) • What are the outcome of this supply chain system if we could imply it and what opportunities could it attract beside foreign investments or local logistics startups ? • How big is the supply chain and logistic sector GPD’s of surrounding countries? • The London Postcode system is based on coordinal directions (NWSE), but the postcode proposed in Oman is based on the current area name used to make it easer to introduce and comprehend to the market since coordinal are not followed or unacknowledged in the country. Ex: Bosher, Khuwair : BK Survey questions and answers + analysis https://surveyhero.com/results/158222/fd89d04c283d785a2f31bc68ff52655d DISSERTATION STRUCTURE: Introduction (around 1000-1500 words): State clearly the importance of your project, preferably backed up by some references; research problem (why you choose to study and address the topic), contributions, main research objective and question. Please do not let the reader wait till the Methodology chapter to know exactly the aims of your project. Literature review (around 3000 words): It is important to develop a coherent and analytical argument with a good flow, rather than just giving a list of theories. The literature can be categorised under themes and must be related to your own research questions/objectives. You can use present tense to write LR. Generally, you should include 30-50 up-to-date quality references (e.g. academic journal articles). Methodology (around 1500 words): Justify your choice of methods, rather than just giving the definitions of research philosophy. It is important to explain the conceptual framework that you have applied. Also explain exactly how you carried out the research, i.e. (1) how did you design and administrate the interview questions or questionnaire, (2) what is your sampling method; (3) how did you collect the data and analyse the data, (4) how did you ensure and evaluate the quality of your research (e.g. you can use Lincoln and Guba’s criteria for a qualitative study); (5) ethical consideration and (6) limitations. Findings and data analysis (around 2500 words): The presentation of findings and analysis may be slightly different between a quantitative and qualitative project. For a quantitative study, you can present the findings first and then move on to the data analysis chapter. For a qualitative study, you can integrate findings and analysis. Importantly, please crystallise the data under some themes. Also, you should use some excerpts from interviews as evidence to support the analysis. Please do not forget to link the analysis with the literature you have reviewed. In an excellent dissertation, students develop their own theoretical framework, based on the findings and analysis. Conclusions and recommendations (around 1500 words): Relate the recommendations to your own findings. In a good dissertation, students generally give rather specific details on implementation plan, e.g. what the programme is about, budget and costs, outcomes, etc The creation of a supply and demand network system for the city of Muscat. Introduction The research proposal contains content on proposed improvement on the enhancement of the existing delivery service within Oman and the development of a supply and demand network system with an accommodating service hub. The research proposal includes identification and evaluation of the importance of postcodes to the community in both its positive and negative aspects within its ranks. Finally, the proposal seeks to evaluate the development and strategic importance of postal codes and service centres at internal level. The focus of the research therefore sets on the ministry of Transport and Communication, and Oman post, which is the biggest and official government owned postal service provider in Muscat that is seeking to redefine and improve services in the capital city. 1.1 Background information Globally, geographical postcodes have been used and developed since the 19th century as a means of guidance during the process of delivering mails in area where large population have settled. As with London in the 19th century, Muscat too had a blooming population due to rural-urban immigration. Consequently, the country’s officials had to design a framework to plan locations for business and personal use with the help of communal zip codes unlike London’s geographic postcodes. In the contemporary world Postcodes has an important aspect of a specific countries logistic infrastructure that involves day to day lives of people regarding consumption and service delivery. As a reference point for business and residential establishments, geographical postcodes have become integral in modern era businesses. Due to the reference points given by postal codes, enterprises can deliver orders for customers therefore, increase their convenience to consumers which gives them a competitive advantage over their competition. A geographical postcode is a combination of numbers and letters that are 5 to 7 which identify the location of an establishment. The alphanumeric codes comprising the postcode include an outward code of 2-4 characters which represents a wider geographical region such as a district and a 3-4 alphanumeric inward code that narrows down the location to street, estate or house in that order or in any that may seem appropriate. 1.2 Oman post, The national courier. The history of mail delivery services in Muscat goes back to 1856 when the British government established the first post office in Muscat, Oman. Post only become a fully- fledged government operations about a century later. Given the country’s complicated colonial history, the citizen used British and Pakistani stamps in the early years of their postal history until about 1966 when the stamps were made exclusively Omani. Even with the renaissance of the early 1970’s that the sultanate of Oman as a country experienced, postal offices increase throughout the country but Oman Post was barely in existence. The company was formed as an order by a Royal Decree issued by Sultan Qaboos bin Said himself in 2005 after appreciating the role of a stable postal system in the continued development of Oman. The company as it is today boasting of a history that spans over a hundred years with 550 employees and 83 branches, according it the capacity to operate internationally with international with international standards especially after a partnership with the Universal Postal 2 Union. Its coverage is in tandem with the structure of its composition given that it is responsible for the delivery of freight goods and mail as well as other related services in 100 countries spread across all continents. The company is locally recognized as the national carrier service provider given it is a courier operation. Also, it provides its customers with shared PO boxes which it situates in malls a common complex alongside other services like virtual mailboxes, parcels and EMS services. 1.3 Problem statement Oman as a country experienced a high growth rate which characterized by the increase in demand for goods and services by the country’s residents. Online services companies have taken note of that growth and are therefore trying to expand their market reach to include Oman. The country’s mail delivery service framework is also aware of the global growth and the demand of its citizens, where they have proposed a form of an international delivery address for the people to access goods and services globally. The proposed method by Oman post company is solution oriented. Oman post has proposed a solution for the citizens of Oman to purchase goods online by providing an alternative address located elsewhere such as the US and the UK, where the buyer uses this address to purchase products which are then delivered through Oman post from the alternative address to Oman. This method of purchasing and delivering is considered as insufficient, time consuming and indirect purchasing mode, which complicates and results in errors on delivery. Therefore, by proposing a dedicated post code system and allocating minor service hubs, it would enable a faster and more efficient method that would eliminate the complexity of the existing p ...
