For instance, because non-cash charges such as depreciation deduct from income, a firm that reported negative earnings may have actually earned money when you count the cash. On the downside, operating cash flow ignores capital expenditures, which include investments required to keep a company competitive in this rapidly changing world. Free cash flow solves that problem. It’s calculated by subtracting capital expenditures from operating cash flow. Thus, free cash flow is excess cash that a firm does not need to fund its basic operations and stay competitive. It could be used to cut debt, fund expansion, raise dividends, etc., all happy events for shareholders. However, free cash flow numbers often bounce around a lot from quarter to quarter. So, any single quarter’s numbers could lead to misleading conclusions Consequently, instead of using a single quarter, most analysts combine the number of the last four quarters, referred to as “trailing 12 months.” Doing that calculation is easy for analysts because they have spreadsheets specifically set up for that task. But it’s a big project for individual investors who typically aren’t organized that way. But everything changed recently when Yahoo reconfigured the three reports; Income, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow statements, included in its Financial Statements section. Besides for adding or modifying certain line items in each report, Yahoo added a trailing 12 months column to each report. And here’s the best news. Yahoo added a Free Cash Flow section to the bottom of its Cash Flow Statement. There, Yahoo separately lists Operating Cash Flow, Capital Expenditures, and Free Cash Flow (operating cash flow minus capital expenditures). You don’t even need a calculator. Yahoo simply gives you the numbers that you need to make better investing decisions. For example, say that you’re comparing Ford Motor and General Motors. Start on Yahoo Finance with Ford by entering its ticker symbol (F) at the top. Then when the Ford Motor summary page displays, select Financials, then Cash Flow, and finally “Quarterly” to display the quarterly cash flow numbers. At the bottom of the left-hand column, Yahoo displays $8.622 billion for Ford’s trailing 12 months free cash flow. Then, at the top, enter General Motors ticker (GM).
