Response 1 :
After reading the commission report on children and disaster, I realized that mental health
is the most challenging topic to solve due to various reasons. Children and disaster is a wide
topic that requires intense keenness when it comes to managing childrens health and physical
growth. Most children experience the mental health impact of disasters and often lack the skills,
experience, and resources needed to meet their behavioral and mental health needs
independently. The report holds that the behavioral and mental health effects attack children of
all ages because of the possibility of lasting reactions.
Various studies show that due to disasters, children often experience academic failure,
anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, grief, and other behavioral
problems (“Report to the President and Congress”). Natural and human-made disasters widely
affect young individuals, and solving mental health impacts that the children face due to these
disasters becomes challenging and stressful. Disasters happen daily, and knowing how? When?
And where the accident will attack and who or which child it will affect is not possible, and thus
solving the mental health problem is completely difficult.
Having read the Commission report, describe the unique aspects that must be considered
when doing emergency planning and response for children.
The unique aspects that ought to be considered when doing the emergency planning and
response for children include acknowledging the behavioral health, physical health, pediatric
transport, and childcare, and child welfare. Childrens Health providers ought to establish
effective ways of responding to childrens needs without further interference with their physical
health as well as behavioral health. During disasters, children experience severe physical and
psychological problems and therefore handling them with enough care to help the children
respond to emergency planning much easier and fast.
Correspondingly, childcare and child welfare are equally significant in emergency
planning and response for children because it is the central aspect that determines the recovery
process of a child who has experienced a certain disaster. The child has to feel safe and secure,
and thus childrens health providers ought to ensure that the childcare and child welfare is part of
the emergency planning and response for children (Teshager 18).

RESPONSE 2 :
Let me highlight the fact that from the previous classes touching on disaster response planning
and management, children are part of the particular population, and as such, they need special
consideration during disaster planning. Children are vulnerable, mentally, physically, and even in
terms of social interactions, and as such, the effect of an incident can have a lasting impact on
them compared to the adults (Revere, 2010). After reading the commission report on children in
disasters, I think the most challenging topic to solve is the mental health aspect. From previous
classes, mental stress effects arising from a disaster are enduring even to the adults. In this case,
therefore, for children, it would be much worse to handle their mental health challenges. In
incidences, where they saw their loved ones die, children are likely to develop trauma that is not
likely to end shortly. Children may find it hard to speak out their minds even when counselors
are brought to them, making it hard to handle their mental health adequately.
In the light of challenges children face during the disaster and especially the mental disturbance,
I think the following considerations should be made for them when doing emergency planning
and response for them (Long, 2013). First, there needs to be individual caregivers for children
who can talk to the children tenderly in a kind and loving manner. At this time of emotional and
mental distress from emergency incidents, children need to be shown love and care. This reduced
them over thinking about the incident hence mitigating any mental health problems long after
events. Priority should be given to children when it comes to basic needs such as food, shelter,
and clothing. Children with medical conditions should be considered first. Finally, I think the
provision of security and protection of children from any further traumatizing event needs to be
considered adequately (Macdonald, 2009).
