Vaccines prepare the body to fight off diseases without being pre-disposed to the symptoms of the disease. When foreign invaders such as those of bacteria or viruses enter the human body, the immune cells which are also called ‘lymphocytes’ begin responding with the production of antibodies to fight them off (“NIH.gov,” 2019). These antibodies are the protein molecules that naturally are produced for fighting off diseases and viruses. The antibodies created begins fighting the invaders of antigens to protect the body against further infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), states “an individual that is healthy can produce millions of antibodies per day so efficiently, that most never become aware their bodies were introduced to an antigen (“NIH.gov,” 2019). Vaccines not only work for the individuals but also works as a community effort. Some people can’t get vaccinated because they are too young or because their immune systems have weakened too much for them to be effective. When this happens, those in the community who have been vaccinated still provides that unvaccinated protection. This is called herd community, meaning they are unlikely to be exposed to the disease because all others around them have been vaccinated (“NIH.gov,” 2019). The active immunization began with the onset of smallpox and was based on the inclination of observations, whereas immunity was being conferred to by rubbing the smallpox scabs. This was the first vaccine created to help aid the prevalence of smallpox. It was noted that those exposed to cowpox earlier on, had developed many antibodies that prevented the smallpox disease (JAMA, 1894). The traditional methods of vaccines, however, was being exposed to individuals under a non-regulatory process. It wasn’t until later that the development of regulations and policies regarding vaccines must be met before distributing the vaccine to VACCINES 3 individuals. This was in 1894, whereas the New York City Board of Health began instructing the Health Departments to develop plans of potency and purity of the vaccines in which they were administering (JAMA, 1894). Further analysis and methods of administering vaccines to patients were developed under the passage of a virus-toxins act that was created by Congress in 1902 (Kondratas, 1982). Currently, there is two state laboratories, one university, and twelve commercial manufacturers that are licensed to produce one or more vaccines to be administered to the public throughout the U.S. these vaccines have been created to help fight over twenty different diseases and viruses that have significantly decreased mortality rates among the population since their invention (Hume, H. K. C., & Lua, 2017). There are many diseases that have been profoundly found in humans. However, most illnesses can be prevented by vaccinations. Some of those diseases that call for routine immunizations in children and adults are chickenpox, influenza, hepatitis A and B, HPV, and measles (CDC, n.d.). These routine vaccinations are provided given that the person’s age, health, and prior vaccinations have been considered. Most vaccinations have been found safely useful given that the physician administering them follows the guidelines for each vaccine concerning the patient’s history and characteristics. Treatments have significantly reduced the mortality rates among children and adults. The benefits of vaccinations relate to the control and eradication of the diseases among populations (Andre et al., 2008). Elimination of the diseases and viruses provides the control of mortality, morbidity, and further complications of them that could arise. Some common parental concerns regarding vaccinations are how they are given and at what age. Concerns revolve around the parents becoming worried that their babies are being exposed to the treatments at such an earlier age. Although infants do not receive many shots, those intended to be administered at birth raises concerns for future complications and illness. VACCINES 4 Some parents feel that vaccinations raise concerns about the possibility of developing cancers, liver damage, and heart disease in their future. However, valid research has proposed to consumers of vaccinations that they are safely administered and have been well-studied to ensure the future safety of those vaccinated (“American Academy of Pediatrics,” 2018). Vaccinations have been rigorously tested and monitored and have been considered among the safest medical products on the market. Millions of vaccinations are given to children and adults to prevent further illness and pathogens entering their bodies (Miller et al., 2015). Although rare cases of treatments causing deaths have been reported, there is substantial evidence that provides no indication of this becoming a concern. The benefits of vaccinations drastically outweigh the rare changes in adverse effects among individuals administered with them. However, according to Miller et al., (2015), making general assumptions and drawing conclusions about vaccinations causing deaths based on spontaneous reports to VAERS – some of which might be anecdotal or second-hand – or from case reports in the media, is not a scientifically valid practice (Miller et al., 2015). To conclude, vaccines have been found to provide many benefits to society, even saving the lives of millions of people. Diseases, pathogens, and viruses are concerns of the modern-day society whereas vaccination have helped aid these foreign pathogens from killing millions. Vaccinations as with any other medications being administered, can cause complications and challenges for the future of some, however, through scientific research and experiments, it has been well noted that vaccinations help more than they hurt. The development of vaccinations has greatly increased since the cowpox disease was first noted, into what is safer and more regulated through administration. Parents have brought concerns up given vaccinating their children, but VACCINES sound evidence has proven that the vaccinations administered outweighs the death rate and complications that would be caused by the disease if not vaccinated. 5 VACCINES 6 References American Academy of Pediatrics (2018).
