When looking ahead to the long term, my goal is to implement learned skills in an executive position. After an examination of multiple online educational opportunities for leadership degrees, I ultimately choose Liberty University because of the practical application of courses, the availability of an online program, and the Christian worldview. I am a career transitioner, having worked for more than ten years as a special education teacher. Multiple reasons led me towards a new career, including inconsistent teacher salary and a lack of opportunity for change within education. Due to moving every couple of years with an active-duty husband who serves in the Army, my salary has never experienced traditional growth because of the differences in state and local pay scales. To say that licensing between states has been an adventure is an understatement, and career growth is very set, usually hierarchical positions such as administration, district-level curriculum positions, or higher education. To give some background, I have been a jack-of-all-trades of a sort. I had a career in retail before entering education; I have held positions such as waitressing, childcare, personal trainer, first call vehicle driver, commissioned artist, and small business owner. Ive always worked; ever since I was fifteen years old and eligible for a work permit. At first, it was a means of support and freedom to be on my own, but as the years progressed, I viewed work as a means to serve others. When I decided to change careers, I questioned my motives. A quote from Dr. Henry Cloud provided the sign I was moving in the right direction: Getting to the next level always requires ending something, leaving it behind, and moving on. Growth demands that we move on. Without the ability to end things, people stay stuck, never becoming who they are meant to be, never accomplishing all their talents and abilities should afford them. (Olson, 2011, para. 5) In May 2019, I was born again into Christ; I know that all work is to glorify God. I remind myself always to rejoice in the Lord before all else (Merida, 2015) and embrace growth. I feel that leadership in the corporate environment offers so many creative opportunities to use the skillset I have developed while teaching. I desire to work in a career where I can apply leadership to effect change, solve problems, and help organizations grow. Per Liberty Universitys (n.d.) webpage about the DSL program, Through our doctorate in strategic leadership, you will learn how to direct organizational change, become an effective servant leader, and implement principles of executive management theory. Alongside Libertys program, I am supplementing my professional development with coursework towards a Business Administration certificate in addition to courses that will lead towards a Certified Associate in Project Management certificate. Due to constant moves as part of my husbands career, military spouses face an unprecedented 24\% unemployment rate. Some of the reasons include license transferability issues, gaps in employment, remote living areas, lack of childcare, and little-known Status of Force Agreements (SOFA) agreements for overseas bases that reserve jobs for local nationals instead of military spouses. I acknowledge that I am very fortunate to have military resources, including professional certificate opportunities, available to help negate some of the obstacles. Looking ahead, I dont know in what type of specific corporate environment I will ultimately land. I recognize with my experience in the field of education that I very well may land back in education in some form. For now, I am focused on my upcoming internship with a nearby corporate office that begins next week. The Christian worldview of Libertys program appealed to me because I see my career purpose to serve. I can read and understand what I am reading, unfortunately, I don’t possess a passion for it. I’m not complaining nor particularly happy about this attribute, but I am hoping this program will help encourage some healthy reading habits. Based on what I see in the list of assignments for the course I am sure to achieve this particular goal. I would also like to see an improvement in the comprehension of the material I read. Keep in mind, I’m not just focused on reading comprehension, I’m also interested in the ability to unravel, participate and use what I have read in some form or fashion. Critical thinking comes to mind, which is the ability to analyze something and develop an opinion or thought or conclusion. Patrick Finn (2019) noted that a strong critical thinker is “open to examining alternate views” (357) and based on some of the course topics, like Research Theory & Planning, I should obtain skills in this area (Liberty University Online, personal communication, 2019). I can’t help but be excited by the plethora of material that will be at my disposal. I feel like the material I had access to, prior to the start of this class, represents a swarm of random items that are from unreliable sources. I have faith this program opens the door to libraries of dependable information where I can have confidence in what I am reading. This will meet a goal of mine which is to have an appreciation for all of the different libraries of material and the ability to differentiate between good information and bad reports. Let’s zero in on vocabulary, which seems like such a simple goal and one that I should have achieved in grade school, however it is not a strength of mine. Reading inevitably carries along an expanded vocabulary due to the nature of the process; absorption of the information. For example, I heard the word vociferous earlier this week which I had to look up and found out it means clamorous (Dictionary.com, n.d.). Would reading more introduce me to words like vociferous? I would assume so which is why it is on my list of goals for this program. Servant leadership is one of my long-term goals for this program. How can I serve others while leading the same group of people through different activities or events? How do I share knowledge with people in my circle or encourage them to take ownership of a task? Help me recognize the value of being a servant and lead a servant’s life. Reading ahead to the section on Leading Effective Teams BMAL 727 (Liberty University Online, personal communication, 2019) shows me that this program and this course outline will help me integrate biblical principles as well as reading books like The serving leader: Five powerful actions to transform your team, business and community (2nd ed.) The integration of Christian values, concepts, and actions into my daily work life is a goal that I have for this program as well. I pray that I receive the courage to apply and leverage what I have learned in a Christian environment where I live, work, play, shop, and sleep. This program should afford me the ability to communicate in a way that doesn’t offend others but also doesn’t shun my deeply rooted desire to know Jesus Christ.
