Your Motomart Project #500896 is being returned for the following reasons as a combination
of these results in a failing grade:
It is not unusual to have the project returned as not graded.
It is evident that you have done a lot of work, which is good. The feedback is being provided
to help you “tweak” what you have done in order to help meet the requirements for the
project.
If you are don’t understand something about what needs to be done, then do not hesitate to
telephone and speak with me. Students who do call, find it much easier to complete the
project because they get a better understanding for what needs to be done as opposed to
reading the written word and being unsure due to “interpretation”.
● Formatting in professionally written papers is important. This not only pertains to the
paper being written well (English Composition), but, also in how information is
presented in tables.
o If figures are dollar amounts, they should be presented in dollars and cents.
o If figures are percentages, they should be shown carried out to two decimal
places (unless otherwise, specified).
o All figures should be either right-aligned or decimal aligned to have the figures
line up correctly.
For Step 1:
You are to focus on the semi-fixed expenses and provide and explanation as to the “patterns”
they present.
Also, you are to provide what is incorrect with the figures, not only their pattern. Think about
whether the figures are right or wrong. What is it about the individual numbers that is not
“right”? While you don’t have the “detail” as to how the numbers are arrived at, you are not
speculating as to what the numbers should be. You are looking for what “does not make
sense” with the numbers.

What is “not right” with the figures?
This has nothing to do with an analysis or falling within statistical parameters.
Take a close look at what is “different” and then explain why it should not be different.
This step is not about the ups and downs of the data. There are really no “outliers”.
But, in looking at each individual expense and thinking about how a business incurs the
expense, there is one expense that does have an unusual pattern.
For Step 2:
There are 4 expenses that “stick out” as not being correct (there is something wrong with the
figures). Again, while you don’t have the “detail” as to how the numbers are arrived at, you
are not speculating as to what the numbers should be. You are looking for what “does not
make sense” with the numbers.
This is the same thing that you are looking for in Step 1, except there are 4 expenses. Which
ones and why?
There is one expense that has an unusual pattern. Every accounting period has expenses. For
example, if rent is to be paid, then rent expense should have an amount. A hotel should have
maintenance expenses every month. The amounts should also be reasonable. If expenses are
within a certain range and all of a sudden there is an amount that is well outside of that
range, then that is unusual. However, that is not the case with this data. Expenses can go up
and down. You are not reporting this up and down. You are looking for the unusual pattern
that also does not make sense.
For Step 3:
Revisit the high/lows to ensure you are accurate in all of them before resubmitting.

For Step 4:
Your figures are incorrect for this step.
You are missing the required work in the Excel file.
How did you arrive at the figures that you presented?
The worksheet has been provided for you to do the work for this step.
● There is a “60 Months” worksheet that has the 60 months of data already entered.
There is a “Sample” worksheet that an example of how to calculate the R-sq.
● There is a “PLOT – SALARY” worksheet that shows how the FC, VC and R-sq figures are
calculated for Salary.
Complete and include the Excel file as support for the figures provided in the table for this step.
If the Excel file with the work completed in it is not provided, then no credit for this step will be
given which will cause the project to fail. You include the excel file but you do not have a
PLOT spreadsheet for each expense as you are supposed to.
What needs to be done is:
● Create new spreadsheets for each of the expenses. Use the PLOT-SALARY spreadsheet
as a “template” for what needs to be done for each of the additional expenses.
● The calculated figures in the spreadsheet should be the same as those shown when
you present Table 5. This is the supporting “work” for the figures. If they are not the
same, no credit will be given.
● If the formulas in the cells are not provided or correct in the spreadsheets, no credit
will be given. (Typing numbers into cells will not be given credit for. Formulas in cells
for the figures must be provided.)
● The graphs on the spreadsheets also need to be included in order to be able to answer
the four questions for this step.

For Step 5:
Rework this step based upon the corrected steps for the project. Answer the questions being
asked for the step as it pertains to your findings in the project. Be sure to actually answer the
direct question being asked, can the data be used?
Please rework and resubmit the project for grading. If you have any questions, feel free to

The above analysis shows a downward trend in the operating profit over the years. The figures
of the operating profits tremendously continue to decline up to a stage where the figures are
negative as it shows from year 1986 through the year 1988, which is the worse among the five
year. This may be caused by the increasing trend of both the total fixed expenses and the SF
expenses, which increases at a higher rate as compared to the rate at which net variable revenue

The trend in the semi fixed expenses is the total semi fixed expenses increases over a few
months followed by a decline in the total expenses in on month. As seen in the first month where
the total expenses increased from 2,772 to 100,632 in the second month and to 108,107 in the
third month and followed by a decline to 72,584 during the fourth month and then an upward
trend in fifth and sixth month. The unusual trend appears in months 27 and 29 where there it
appears two consecutive declines in the twenty-seventh month as well as the twenty-eight one.
The total semi fixed expenses declined from 157,867 during the twenty-sixth month to 147,895
during the twenty-seventh month and to 139,950 during the twenty-eight month and then the
two consecutive increases in the following months. The same unusual pattern appears again
between the forty-eight and forty-nine as well where the total expenses declined in the two years.
Taking the salaries and the vacation, the two assume an upward trend between 1984 and 1985.
Salaries continued with the upward trend while vacation declined in the years 1985 to 1988. On
the other hand, supplies and advertising have an upward trend as from 1984 to 1988, but for the
supplies, there was a decline in the year 1987 then it resumed to the increase. The floor planning
has an upward trend in the first two years followed by a two year decline and then an increase in
the year 1988. The floor planning increased from 287,531 in the year 1984 to 305,044 during the

It may not be possible to link the NVR lows and highs with those of the other variables to
determine the variable and fixed elements of the NVR. It is because the low point of the NVR is
31 and the high value of the same is 280 while those of the salaries are 128,007 and 46,114 for
the high and low respectively. Taking the total expenses of the semi fixed variable would
probably be more appropriate to use.

With the value of the yearly basis it is easier to evaluate and get the difference between the low
and high of the semi fixed expenses and the NVR. High the low and the high measures do not
match the two gives inaccurate data of the fixed and variable expenses. Low and high expenses
provides values for the company that can be used to estimate the fixed and the variable costs of
the total semi fixed expenses but not the real data as it only compares the two extremes.

1. What problems did you encounter?
The main problem was to put all figures on the excel sheet for 60 months. I think if figure would
have been given on yearly basis then result would not have big difference. Also, another
problem is the negative fixed cost as it cannot be negative and it should be positive instead.
Furthermore, the slopes are also in negative for some of the SF expenses.
2. Are the R-squared measures high or low?
For salaries and total SF expense it is low while for all other expenses it is high.
3. Are the slopes negative or positive?
Some of them are positive and some of them are negative. However, for total it is negative slope.
4. Are your conclusions consistent with those from the high-low effort?
Yes, as the variable and fixed element of some of the SF expenses are negative like high low
point method therefore, the conclusion is the same that the company should use some other
activity as the base to determine variable and fixed element of SF expenses.
Step 5
I have used the variable and the fixed cost in the analyzing of data. As we know, fixed cost is
does not change either with an increase or decrease in the amount of goods and/or services sold
or produced. On the other hand, variable cost varies with the level of output. In other words, it
varies and it is not constant. Using a base is a most crucial factor in the determination of the

fixed and the variable costs. For example in this case the semi fixed expenses is determined by
the changes in the eight items used such as salaries and vacations. In this example the base that
was used is the NRV. The NRV was not the most appropriate even though it has been used and
therefore, it becomes difficult to determine the values of the fixed and the variable costs
irrespective of the method that is used to calculate the fixed and the variable cost. To obtain the
true values of the fixed and variable cost using the various methods other factors could be
considered as the base of calculations other than using the NRV. The factors that would have
probably given the most correct figures for the variable and the constant costs are the number of
hours for labor or the units of a product produced within a given period of time. The negative
value shown by the demonstrators during the year 1986 may build a basis within which
