In each case presented, determine if the effort to move supplies made a significant impact on the success or failure of the event. Select one event and provide an example of an action that would have provided a better outcome for the disaster. Briefly explain how you came to that conclusion. Ibrahim Alnami DB 2 The Preposition NPS article highlights the adverse impacts of natural disasters in many different countries. Some of these events are the Indian Ocean “Boxing Day” tsunami in 2004, Haiti 2010 Earthquake, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the influenza “Swine Flu” Epidemic of 2009 (Apte & Yoho, 2011). In this post, I will explain the effort to deliver supplies to the affected populations in each of these incidents. Indian Ocean “Boxing Day” Tsunami of 2004 Since this natural disaster was unexpected, it resulted in many harmful outcomes, including deaths, injuries, missing and displaced persons, infrastructure damages, and unprepared logistical materials. (Apte & Yoho, 2011). The response to this incident was complicated because it occurred suddenly and unexpectedly. Thus, it was difficult to presume the need for such sufficient logistical supplies, which made it much harder for entities to respond to this event effectively. Not only the unprepared for adequate supplies was a huge issue, but also delivering them was challenging due to the damaged transportation infrastructure (Apte & Yoho, 2011). Haiti 2010 Earthquake In terms of the aftermath, there is a study that shows the adverse impacts on Haiti following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Mung et al. (2010) state that there were more than 200,000 people died, and over 300, 000 were injured, and almost one million and a half were displaced. After the earthquake hit in 2010, the demand for such healthcare centers, logistical supplies, and shelters to support these affected people was pivotal. As a result, there were many clinics and temporary shelters provided by healthcare and aid workers to treat the injured people and support the displaced populations. However, it was challenging to deliver supplies since damaged ports and runways, and rubble-filled streets created obstacles to transporting these lifesaving supplies (Altay & Labonte, 2014). Hurricane Katrina Catastrophic disasters are events in which dire, unexpected circumstances occur. These incidents, such as hurricanes and earthquakes, destroy the health care system in many different ways. For instance, these disasters may lead to massive deterioration in the medical infrastructure, including hospitals, clinics, trauma centers, pharmacies, and medical supplies. The electrical power or communications capabilities can also be disrupted. For instance, in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, it was challenging to deliver supplies to the majority of the affected people due to loss of communication among New Orleans agencies because of losing power (Holguín-Veras et al., 2007). Therefore, the effort to move adequate supplies to the affected populations was a failure since there was a lack of preparation for this hurricane. Influenza “Swine Flu” Epidemic of 2009 This incident caused more than ten thousand deaths in many different countries. The public health response experienced difficulties regarding educating people about the severity of this epidemic (Apte & Yoho, 2011). One such example of these difficulties was that there were inadequate supplies, including vaccines. Furthermore, this influenza can transform from person to another rapidly. As a result, the pandemic spread widely among people, leading to many deaths. The need for such establishing surge capacity was crucial at that time to prevent spreading the epidemic among populations. However, since the influenza was confirmed in many different places in the world, it was much more challenging to handle it, particularly with lacking logistical supplies such as vaccines (Apte & Yoho, 2011). Select one event and provide an example of an action that would have provided a better outcome for the disaster. Briefly explain how you came to that conclusion. Mung et al. (2010) state that one adverse impact in the aftermath of the Haiti 2010 Earthquake was spreading infectious diseases such as malaria. Since the earthquake damaged the healthcare infrastructure, and there were many displaced persons in shelters, I agree that infectious diseases, including malaria, will likely spread quickly among some of these people due to the weak healthcare system after the incident. Hence, I think aid workers needed to focus on preventing infectious diseases by vaccinating the affected populations and establishing a high-quality atmosphere in the affected areas while providing shelters. Therefore, the need for such adequate supplies, including vaccines and infection control materials, would be vital for responders to aid and support the affected populations. Since this incident injured more than 300 thousand and displaced over one million people, the logistic responders would likely be overwhelmed. Therefore, the need for such effective coordination and integration was crucial to support the affected population in Haiti during and after this event. Furthermore, there were many Haitians already living with disabilities before the earthquake, making it much more complicated for responders to support them effectively while the majority of the healthcare system there was dramatically destroyed by the disaster (Altay & Labonte, 2014). I thus believe that mitigation would be a beneficial mission to succeed in such preparing for and responding to Hurricane Katrina. References Altay, N., & Labonte, M. (2014). One action that would have resulted in a better outcome is the evacuation of people in the affected areas. Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005. There was the knowledge that the hurricane would strike the city of New Orleans (Apte & Yoho, 2011). Residents had been warned about the impending danger and advised to move to safe places. However, despite the warnings, many people decided to stay and failed to vacate the affected areas. The implication is that many people were killed and property destroyed. If all people were evacuated in advance, the hurricane would have caused minimal death. Evacuation could have helped since people would have been moved from areas that were under serious threat. Local authorities and other non-governmental organizations would have helped ensure that all residents of New Orleans were safely evacuated prior to Hurricane Katrina striking. The predicted hurricane path would have been cleared, and this would have ensured that the threat to human life was eliminated. In addition, the hurricane was made worse by the lack of sufficient planning. The city lacked an elaborate evacuation plan. Evacuation of the residents would have been followed by humanitarian assistance to the victims. The state of Louisiana failed to activate the National Guard in time. Buses were organized, and they began evacuating residents. However, if there were a proper evacuation and timely response to the disaster, the state would have managed to save lives (Apte & Yoho, 2011). An evacuation that is done in a timely manner saves lives and ensures that people remain safe in times of a disaster. It is imperative that authorities learn from previous disasters to ensure that they are prepared to combat future disasters. References Apte, A., & Yoho, K. D. (2011).
