In most cases, changes are aimed at bringing a positive impact on the organization. Some changes occur automatically, while others need to be initiated by the companys management. Managers should come up with clear intervention strategies in response to organizational and environmental pressures. This paper will examine the change plan that Starbucks Corporation can implement in response to the influences affecting it. Organizational/ environmental Pressures Starbucks Corporation was founded in 1971 in Seattle, Washington. It has over 30000 outlets spread in 70 countries. The company services a variety of coffee beverages like micro-ground instant coffee, whole bean coffee, Caffe latte, espresso, among others. From 1987 t0 2007, the company has been opening an average of two new retail outlets daily. Starbucks opened its largest outlet in November 2019 in Chicago (Snider & Meyer, 2018). Starbuck is known to value its customers by having a welcoming atmosphere. Starbuck employees are expected to behave respectfully towards their customers by displaying dignity and transparency. The companys mission is to inspire and nurture the human spirit. The company values corporate social responsibility and that is why they value their customers and their employees. In the recent past, the company faced racial organizational pressure. The corporate pressure occurred in one of the stores in Philadelphia when two African America gentlemen were barred from using the restroom. The two men were asked to leave the store, and when they resisted, the police were called to arrest them (Taecharungroj, 2017). This action negatively affected the reputation of Starbucks stores. Customers boycotted some of the IMPLEMENTING CHANGE 3 Starbucks stores in the US, where the protestors displayed the anti-racial messages on the boards and outside the stores. The negative reputation brought a decrease in the market share. To deal with this organizational pressure, the Starbuck CEO had to apologize for the act. All the Starbuck stores in the United States were closed for one afternoon to give the entire staff racial bias training. The training took four hours, and more than 175,000 employees from 8000 stores were involved (Snider & Meyer, 2018). The training aimed at educating employees against the racial profiling of the customers the cultural diversity of the customers. Although racial discrimination is prevalent in the United States, It should be discouraged in business settings. Racial discrimination affects the performance of the company because it creates a negative reputation for the company. The Starbuck management was acted fast to deal with the case of the racial discrimination reported in a store in Philadelphia. If the organization fails to address the racial pressure, there is a likelihood that the company will be negatively rated. In the long run, the company will lose customers and may suffer a loss. A Change Vision The Starbuck Company had to design a change vision to save the reputation of the company. A change vision is a picture of how the company will look like after implementing the changes. The Starbuck Company aims at being a company where all the customers are treated equally regardless of their racial background (Snider & Meyer, 2018). The first step in achieving their goal was to offer training to the employees on racial bias. When the employees are trained on the importance of treating all the customers equally regardless of their race, then it is unlikely for an incidence of racial profiling to occur. In case such a case occurs, then it should not be exposed to the media but should be dealt with in-house by the IMPLEMENTING CHANGE 4 management. Starbuck aspires to be a company where people from all races can walk in and be accorded a warm welcome and treated in dignity. Change Model To implement the change vision, the company should adopt the following strategies to respond to racial bias pressure. The first step should be defining the problem. The management should describe and analyze the problem and n how it manifests itself within the organization (Powell et al., 2015). In this case, the management should describe how racial bias occurs in Starbuck. The second step is to investigate the available resources and support within the company. The funds that can be utilized to mitigate the racial discrimination problem are human resources. Training of the employees of the Starbuck Company on racial discrimination is necessary. The management should offer the support needed for the employees to achieve the organizational goals. After the identification of the available resources, the next step will be a clarification of the goals and objectives. The goals of the company should be clearly defined. The target population should be specified and the desired outcomes stated (Waltz et al., 2015). Setting the goals enables the company to work together towards achieving the companys goals. Promoting team building and empowerment is crucial in change implementation. Change occurs when all the members of the organization are aware of what is expected of them. The members should also be committed to the change implementation and act towards achieving it. The establishment of an organizational infrastructure should follow the promotion of the team building. The development of an organizational context in line with the intervention requirements is crucial for successful intervention. Implementation means that some drastic changes in the organization have been realized. However, the changes are gradual, and so the various intervention components IMPLEMENTING CHANGE 5 should be implemented in a sequence. Finally, the intervention should be transferred to other organizational settings once it has been proved to be effective. Potential Resistance Anytime there are changes in an organization. There is a likelihood of resistance from the stakeholders. The possible resistance that may occur in Starbuck may come from the employees and the customers. Some employees may not be comfortable with treating customers from different races in the same way. Some customers, primarily from the white race, may not be satisfied mixing with African American customers (Taecharungroj, 2017). The reasons for resistance are varied but may be due to socialization. The opposition is likely to occur at the implementation stage. To overcome anger, the company needs to prepare their employees and customers in advance. The intended changes should be communicated before implementation. The company should also provide an avenue for the employees and customers to give their feedback on the anticipated changes. Conclusion Although racial discrimination is prevalent in the US, reputable companies like Starbuck should devise ways of dealing with it. As a top coffee chain in the world, Starbuck should implement changes that will enable it to deal with all types of customers. The Starbuck customers are from all racial backgrounds, and therefore they deserve to be treated with dignity. The company will succeed in implementing the changes required to maintain its reputation if it follows the above steps. 6 IMPLEMENTING CHANGE References Powell, B. J., Waltz, T. J., Chinman, M.
