Now at the age of twenty-five, he is learning to lead Silver Line Group, one of the largest conglomerate in textile and apparel sector in Bangladesh, as the Director of the company and key person of its Textile venture. Mr. Hassan is a trend setter. From being a huge car enthusiast, to his black leather backpack adorned with metal spikes that he brings to his business meetings and also the way he carries himself has a distinct flare to it. He and his friends like to refer to him as a foodie, knowing where all the best eats are in all the places he has visited. Mr. Hassan likes to maintain his health by working out on a daily basis and keeping up a proper nutritious diet. But how does this flare translate to his business strategies? ‘I make it a point to regularly ask my procurement team- “What is out there in the world right now?” I am mostly interested in following where the trends lead us and coming up with new sustainable yarns to be used in the future with the help of our Research and Development team,’ he says. “In Bangladesh, all textile manufacturers want to stick with cotton because it’s our comfort zone, but I really want to step out of it,” he adds. Samit Hassan is creating innovation in the realm of fabric and fiber, the fundamental building blocks of textile industry. He explains, “We’re the first in Bangladesh to be doing Hemp, a naturally produced and 100\% UV protected fiber that makes it suitable for protection against sun exposure. Organic fabrics are more skin-friendly making them better for the environment. We are also developing fragrant fabric, water resistant fabric, Bamboo yarn, composition of silk and spandex, composition of silk and cotton and Aramid, which is a class of heat-resistant and strong synthetic fibers, used in aerospace and military applications.” The textile and apparel industry in Bangladesh has come a long way since the year 2002 when his father and Managing Director Mr. M. A. H. Salim founded the Silver Line Group. Back then there weren’t many quality yarn suppliers in Bangladesh. Now it is widely renowned for delivering high quality 100\% Cotton Yarns for export oriented knit fabrics and apparel units. The success of it has not only garnered praise, it has also drawn the attention of buyers who are even more demanding. “Buyers not only want us to mass produce orders, but also they now want us to bring them designs. We are having to multitask which is unprecedented in the Bangladeshi textile industry”, says Mr. Hassan. But he is not one to panic. Here he reassuringly states- “Their greed makes me hungrier for their knowledge. They are pushing me to push them so that together we can push the trends to the people.” He adds, ‘One thing that I learned from my marketing team is to never say “No”, because once you say “No”, you are transferring your negativity to your buyers and you end all possibility of a deal.” “All the other Textile companies feel threatened by us because we are taking complex orders and successfully producing them in bulk. We are forcing them to extend their boundaries. In the end, every single dollar or euro that we bring in goes into developing the economy of our country. However, we are also open to collaboration with other textile companies in order to meet the demands of our buyers.” He credits his father’s willingness to invest in a state-of-the-art production line for their success. He says, “All of this was made possible because my father invested in European machineries instead of cheap Chinese machineries which might have saved us a lot of money but wouldn’t have lasted long or produced high quality materials. We are still a small conglomerate, producing 120,000 yards per day, compared to others who produce up to 500,000 yards, because all our orders are custom-tailored for specific buyers. But we don’t shy away from making big purchases if they serve our lofty ambitions.” When asked about why he keeps doing what he does, Mr. Hassan responds, “Because I saw every brick being laid during the construction of our textile factory. My father made me a Director when I was just eighteen and all my friends had said that I got a Golden Ticket handed down to me. But my father made sure that I worked just like anybody else in the factory whenever I went there. I was told to observe and never command anyone, instead to let them open up to me as a co-worker. Thanks to that I am glad to say that my team respects me for the person I am. I never command respect, instead I try my best to motivate people and work amongst them. I still don’t have my own office in the factory, I sit in the conference room on the weaving sector, observe everyone and listen to the loud rush of threads being woven in the machines.” Samit Hassan was among the top ten students of his high-school in California and a National Honours Society member. He has been studying International Business Management, shifting from Miami, Florida to Geneva, Switzerland for his education but he has never studied textile. So where did he get his experience from? “I have relied on our CMO Umrao Sher Singh Uppal and ED of Production and Operation Jetendra Prasad Shukla, our previous Production Head Asadullah Siddique, Azizul from Research and Development and Production Officer Wasim for counsel. But my father is the one who taught me the importance of hands-on experience.” Mr. Hassan reflects, “My father was a freedom fighter. Although I am quite certain my dad is around sixty-five, he keeps telling everyone that he is sixty years old. He has raised this entire company from the ground with painstaking dedication. He likes to look over everyone. I lean a bit differently in this regard- I want to delegate tasks to my employees and trust them to accomplish them successfully and to the best of their abilities.” He adds, “While my father might have backdated notions about social media and thinks that it is a distraction, he understands the importance of exposure. This is why he and a few other core members of our team went to display our products at the Textworld Paris 2019 convention. For the first time in our company’s history, our clothes walked on the ramp in Paris for the world to see. We will also be going to the Magic convention in Los Angeles to source prospective American buyers later this year. We are also opening our factory to media and students for promotion and future head-hunting campaigns.” When asked about other possible ventures, Mr. Hassan says, “We are creating an aviation company. We are also planning on opening our brand store in Bangladesh soon. Besides that, we will also be expanding our factories, adding a new washing plant, ordering other machines for processing solid viscose. Our new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system makes it possible for us to stay updated on all our orders and procurements.” Samit Hassan seems to be at the top of his work, but there are instances when the pressure gets to him. He says, “The thing that scares me the most is not meeting up to my customers’ and employees’ expectations. The thought that other companies will beat me to the next best thing is what pushes me to wake up at 4 am to go to my factory and inspect each of the 226 machines or sit with my Research and Development team. Together we come up with new ways to keep our competition on their toes.” ... Purchase answer to see full attachment
