CompetencyExamine and design visual media communication to produce effective business materials.ScenarioYou are a website designer and are currently being considered as the designer for a complete redesign of a medical facilitys website page. They have not updated their website in over 15 years due to the lack of staff. The website needs the redesign to target the specific visual preferences of patients and medical clients. They have several other designers that they are interviewing, and you decide to create a video presentation to impress them to choose you as their website designer. As you begin your presentation, you decide that your design will include the following visual concepts and elements:Visual OrganizationVisual SimplicityVisual InteractivityCharts and GraphsImagesIn designing these visual elements, you keep the target audience of patients and medical clients as the main focus. You carefully consider what these types of people wish to see at a medical facility. You also consider what visual elements will attract the eye, and yet enhance a specific mood and emotional response for viewers. After creating the website, you record your explanation of your visual design choices in an audio/video screen share.Your presentation should be a maximum of 5 minutes.

Business Material Visual
This is an exciting time for visual communication, particularly in business.
Businesses are faced with a global economy and the need to find new trading
partners and keep old trading partners, so they must readily communicate
with people of different cultures and different languages. One of the best
communication tools is to use graphics and visuals.
Why is it important to include visual communication with textual
communication?
As humans, a majority of us are visual learners and thinkers. Visuals allow us to send
messages quickly and meaningfully. For example, open a companys annual report and
note how the presentation visually leads you through the companys yearly performance
information. The strategic use of whitespace and prominent positioning of graphics on
the pages will attract and guide the eyes of the viewers to the correct data that is
important. In most businesses, the textual communication elements take a secondary,
explanatory position.
.
How might visuals effect business communication?
In the business world, we need to be aware of which type of graphics will send the most
efficient message and which will appeal to our audience. For example, in an annual
report, it is important to introduce the leaders of the company or the Board of Directors.
Would writing a mini-biography or showing a photo of each leader be more eyecatching?
Balancing visuals with textual information is important. Should we use words to discuss
the company profits, or would it be more beneficial to show a visual graph of improved
monthly and yearly sales? One thing to always keep in mind is that we have to lead our
audience visually to retrieve information as quickly as possible.
Website Visuals
Website visual communication is extremely strategic. People surf the internet
at such high speeds; a website has to visually attract the viewers eyes
instantaneously. Not only that, it needs to use visuals that attract the right
target audience. Websites need to consider several things when setting up a
home page to communicate quickly and effectively with the target audience.
First, visual designers should consider the types of visuals that the target
audiences like to see. This may include colors, lines, space, positioning,
images, animation, and social media icons. Lets examine a few different
target audience preferences.
A Medical Facility Website
A medical facility may wish to consider a website home page that has clean, straight
lines, open white spaces, and perhaps blue coloring. First, the clean straight lines
appeal to patients who are already tense from illness and are looking for a clean facility
that is straightforward and organized to help them. Second, due to the stress and
impact of illness, they will not want to see a complicated and complex design which may
cause additional visual tension. Instead, they will respond well to open spaces in the
visual design. Third, it may be beneficial to use colors that can be interpreted as
calming. Using blue in America will present a strong, safe, and calming response with
viewers, while in other countries a different color may be interpreted in this positive way.

Another example might be an early childhood education facility website. This website
looks to appeal visually to parents and children. Consider the use of images, animation,
and social media icons in this scenario. Parents desire to see happy children, but let’s
take this a step further. Parents who have to leave their children at a daycare while they
work may be struggling with some parental guilt. They may feel that they need their
child to be happy with them at the end of the day when they pick them up. Therefore, it
is better to use an image of the happy parent and child reuniting at the end of the day,
rather than a picture of the child playing alone happily. This emotionally attracts the eye
of the parent and may make them feel more secure that their child will love them more
for going to this facility. Additionally, using an animation of this scenario might also be a
great eye-catching feature to attract potential clients. Consider the effects of posting
social media icon links on the main page to help parents spread the word to their parent
friends; this is a good strategic business move to build a community of supporting
clients/parents.
Social Media Visuals
“Wheres the Beef?”
We have all heard of memes, but they are more than just pithy quotes and cute pictures
of cats found on the internet. They are efficient and impactful visual communication
tools. Wendy’s, a popular fast food restaurant, used a meme that spread across the
nation like wildfire: “Where’s the Beef?” One thing that sets apart humans from other
species is our ability to copy one another. If you remember the game “telephone,” one
sentence is given to one child who then repeats it to another, and so on. After the
sentence is repeated to 20 different children, we find that the new sentence is nothing
like the original sentence. This is how visual memes work. We copy these social, visual
ideas and add our own ideas to each. This is the process of social idea evolution. Visual
memes are frequently used by businesses to utilize popular social ideas to market
products and more ideas.
“Got Milk?”
Zoologist Richard Dawkins first suggested the term “meme” because it rhymed with
gene. His thought was that since evolution is based on genes that copy themselves
and are recreated from one generation to the next; they have the ability to replicate
themselves. Bacteria can replicate or reproduce repeatedly many times a day. What
does this have to do with visual communication and memes? Dawkins felt that social
ideas have the same ability to replicate themselves, and they are recreated throughout
generations. His ideas are supported by the ever-popular “Got Milk” meme campaign.

Social Billboards
Tom Standage, in his social media book, points out that we have been creating memes
since the beginning of our species. In ancient Italy, houses were built so the back of the
house faced the street and was blank - no windows or doors. The back of the house
became a billboard for writing social messages. Some of these messages were
personal, some were political, but all the messages communicate. Those walls became
part of our visual climate just like the pyramids in Egypt and the Great Wall of China.
Today, millions of businesses across the globe use social media memes and visuals to
influence potential clients and social ideas. For example, positive memes are spread
through social media to support the best early childhood education, medical facilities,
police officers, and other types of businesses.
