Case Study - Science
Self-Developed Case Study:For the final unit, you will select ophthalmology or otorhinolaryngology as an area of focus and develop a case study. Using medical terminology and eponyms and abbreviations that are associated with the area of specialty that you select, construct a scenario that includes the following elements:a patient, the patient’s age, significant information about the patient’s condition, description of significant symptoms, diagnosis of the disease and/or condition suffered by the patient, andtreatment plan, including procedures, that may need to be done.Your case study should be at least 200 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

Unit Lesson
The medical specialties of ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, while not a part of a specific system, are
very closely related to one another and can be affected by common disease conditions.
Ophthalmology and optometry are the areas of specialty that deal with the eyes and focus on vision. The eyes
are special sense organs consisting of the cornea, pupil, iris, lens, retina, and optic nerve that assist in
aligning one’s vision.
In addition, the conjunctiva, the eyelids, and lacrimal glands serve as accessory organs that protect the eyes.
It is important to understand the distinct differences between the two specialties that exist in this area.
Ophthalmology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions of the eye and vision. The
medical specialist who treats patients in this area is known as an ophthalmologist. Specific duties of an
ophthalmologist include visual examination, prescribing corrective lens, and surgical procedures of the eye.
Optometry focuses on the assessment of visual acuity, and the medical specialist in this area in an
optometrist. Duties of an optometrist include prescribing corrective lenses, treatment of glaucoma and cornea
damage, visual skill problems, screening for diseases of the eye, and pre- and post-surgical care.

Otorhinolaryngology encompasses three areas of the body:
UNIT x STUDY GUIDE
Title
ot/o: ear,
rhin/o: nose, and
laryng/o: throat.
The primary area of otorhinolaryngology is the head and neck region of the body with a focus on two major
functions: housing sensory receptors and providing passageways for food, air, and liquids.
An otorhinolaryngologist (also known as an ENT, or ear, nose, and throat doctor) is one who specializes in
diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the ears, nose, and throat. Although a family physician or an
internist (a doctor of internal medicine) can also treat patients who have conditions that affect these organs,
the ENT can treat problems with hearing, balance, swallowing, voice, head and neck tumors, and airway
obstruction.
For those who choose to work in either of these specialties, a more defined role for working with registration,
scheduling, billing, and coding functions can be seen. For example, at an ENT clinic, medical office personnel
will check in patients, answer phone calls, and schedule appointments. Also, the medical office staff handles
insurance and billing functions and may be required to wear scrubs. Medical office staff often come in contact
with patient records and documents that contain information regarding various diagnoses, tests, and
procedures related to otorhinolaryngology.
In addition, both ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology contain common abbreviations that you should be
familiar with. Please see page 330 and page 351 in your textbook for lists of these abbreviations.
