Then try your hand at composing an original piece of music. (10 points) Score Part 1: Mystery Tune 1. Open Finale NotePad and title your work. In the Document Setup Wizard for Title, type “Major Scales.” Under Composer, type your name. Choose Landscape under Page Size. Select Next. 2. Select an instrument. In the Document Setup Wizard, choose (highlight) any instrument. Choose (highlight) Blank Staff. Choose Add. Choose Next. 3. Select Time and Key signatures. In the Document Setup Wizard, select 4/4 for the Time Signature. Leave the Key Signature as C Major. Choose Finish. You have now opened your blank score. For Part 1, youll be using only quarter notes. For Part 2, you’ll use more features and tools. If these palettes dont appear on-screen when you are viewing Finale NotePad, select what you need from the Window menu. Start with an ascending A Major Scale. (a) Select the quarter note tool and add the first note of the A Major scale on the treble clef staff. (b) Continue building the scale with quarter notes by using the Quarter Note tool to add the correct notes (pitches) to finish your scale. (c) Select the Text tool and type “A Major Scale” under the first note of your A Major scale. Remember that your composition is in the key of C Major (no sharps, no flats), so you will need to add the appropriate sharps and flats into each scale as needed. Review your work from Part 1 and listen to your scales in Playback mode. 9. Correct any mistakes you see and save your Finale NotePad file (scales), which you will submit to your teacher along with the other part of this assignment. (10 points) Score Part 2: Original Composition Now you will be the composer. Follow the guidelines to create an original composition using the notes from one of the four scales you constructed. 1. Select one of the scales from Part 1; choose your favorite one. Those notes are the only ones you should use in this new piece. 2. Choose an appropriate time and key signature of your choice. Decide on a theme and think of a title that supports this theme music. 3. Include 16 measures in your piece. Compose your piece with at least two sections that can be easily defined. After you have written the first four measures, listen to your creation in Playback mode. To make changes, use the Eraser tool. If you choose to remove any notes, you can always add different notes to replace them using Finale NotePad tools. Remember that for this piece, the notes you can use are limited to the specific scale you chose. 4. Continue composing your piece. Feel free to use the Selection tool if you wish to repeat any melodic and rhythmic patterns within your composition. 5. Enrich your piece with the Expression tool. For example, find measures that you want emphasized, and add a crescendo. These marks will make your musical piece more interesting and memorable. 6. Save your work, and then play it back. Listen closely to be sure that the composition represents the sound you were hoping for. Is the title appropriate? How would you describe your piece to someone else? 7. Select the Text tool and double-click under the title of your piece. Type the name of the scale you used to compose your piece. 8. When you are satisfied with your creation, save your Finale NotePad file (original composition) for submission to your teacher.
