Final Project For your Final Project, you will write a 5-page paper focusing on a topic that falls within the Science and Spirituality spectrum. In your paper, you will provide an overview of the topic, analyze and compare the central arguments posed by the scientific community and those posed by the religious community, and then evaluate the ways in which those topics are either able to be reconciled or need to remain separate. As a resource for your project you may use contemporary articles in journals (see the Optional Resources on the Resources page) to gain individual insights from contemporary thinkers. Make sure to include a full bibliography in APA format at the end of your paper to cite all of the sources youve used. Weekly milestone documents located in the Resources section of each week will help you prepare for the Final Project. These documents do not need to be turned in and will not figure into your grade. They are simply tools that you can use as you work on your project, and are designed to help you: Select an issue that figures into the ongoing discussion between Science and Spirituality (Week 1) Locate several reliable sources that are relevant to the topic you have chosen (Week 2) Review the scientific and spiritual arguments surrounding the topic you have chosen (Week 3) Reflect on the similarities and differences between the arguments, and ask yourself if there is a way in which both could be valid without excluding one or the other (Week 4) Organize your thoughts into a cohesive paper that examines and analyzes the current debate surrounding your topic (Week 5) The assignment: Compose a 4-page paper research paper (not including the Title Page and Reference Page) in which you: Identify a topic relevant to the academic field of science and spirituality. Pose an argument (claim) regarding the topic and support that claim with documented evidence. Provide a brief overview of select arguments of both scientists and spiritual thinkers related to that topic. Analyze the validity of selected arguments and determine whether the arguments could be reconciled. 4 pages are not Include a Title Page (including a title expressing the thesis/claim) and References. Cite all sources, in proper APA format, used in your research. Questions about this assignment? Post them in the Contact the Instructor area. For example, the varying degree of religious discrimination among many religions with the highest number of discrimination includes Jews, Muslims, and Sikhs. The effects of religious intolerance on wellbeing and life satisfaction are equal to the effects of major life events such as unemployment and widowhood. The other article, Happiness in Bangladesh: The Role of Religion and Connectedness, found that some religions are happier than others. For example, Muslims tend to be happier than Hindus in Bangladesh. The article aims at correcting the notion that religion is not correlated to wellbeing. In this same artefact mentioned on the first paragraph, we found that religious discrimination leads to negative effects on an individuals wellbeing or life satisfaction. Despite the most discriminated religions being Jews, Muslims, and Sikhs, religious discrimination leads to a decrease of wellbeing in major and minor groups. Therefore, religious discrimination correlates to the well-being of an individual. The article also explains that the effects of religious discrimination are not uniform in all religious traditions. For example, Buddhisms emphasis on non-attachment might explain why very few Buddhists perceived religious discrimination and the wellbeing of members who encountered religious discrimination was not diminished, (Vang, 1927). Therefore, the emphasis on non-material attachment is a natural buffer to reducing religious discrimination thus healthy wellbeing. Religiosity among group members is another way people can reduce the effects of religious discrimination by tapping and being close to other members. Having personal relationships and closeness to their deity is another way of buffering life satisfaction, unlike people that avoid such relations but claim to be religious. The artifact of the “Happiness in Bangladesh: The Role of Religion and Connectedness, article shows that religion is correlated to a persons wellbeing and life satisfaction. For example, Muslims have higher rates of happiness compared to Hindus. The authors conduct a study in which they found Muslims in Achingaon and Baniknagar are likely to be happier than Hindus relatively. However, the authors denote that religion is associated with happiness, but the comfort of living among other Muslims does the magic. The article suggests that being in certain religion does not make some happy, but the environment in which they find themselves does. The article associates the place that an individual lives with their happiness rather than their religion. In the article, the Buddhists in Achingaon are not happy because they do not feel at home and do not like the country, which differs from the perspective of Muslims who seem happy and satisfied. Religious activities belief in a certain religion does not promote wellbeing or life satisfaction in some cases. For example, the effects of religious discrimination in minor and major religions such as Muslims and Jews are similar to the effects of major life problems such as unemployment. Therefore, religious discrimination correlates to the wellbeing or life satisfaction of an individual. Religion does not promote wellbeing or life satisfaction, as was found in the study between Muslims and Buddhists. The Muslims were happier than Buddhists because of living close to other Muslims, unlike the Buddhists who were not at peace which later affected their wellbeing. Therefore, religion, directly and indirectly, impacts an individuals wellbeing or life satisfaction. Reference Devine, J.Hinks, T. and Naveed, A. Spirituality on the other hand refers to the recognition of a sense or feeling or having a belief that there is something greater than oneself, something that is more to being human than sensory experience, and that the greater whole of which we are part is divine in nature. Science is a highly particular method of learning about the world, or knowing about it. Science has shown to be a highly powerful method of learning about the world during the last 500 years, and it is mainly responsible for the technological revolutions that have occurred during this period. However, there are certain fields of knowledge and human experience to which scientific techniques cannot be applied. Answering solely moral issues, aesthetic questions, or what might be broadly classified as spiritual questions are examples of these. Science has been unable to study these regions because they are beyond the domain of material phenomena, such as matter and energy, and are thus impossible to see and quantify. This field of science and spirituality basically has so many topics that can be discussed however will talk about epidemiology as our topic. Epidemiology refers to the study and analysis of the distribution and the determinants of health and diseases conditions in a defined population .It shape the policy decisions based on practice by identifying the risk factors for disease and targets for preventive Healthcare. Science provides the platform to which the study can be conducted, it give the determination of the diases, how it came about, how it can be infected to a human being ,what would be it effects to the body of a human being and finally how it can be cured and prevented. The believe in spirits on the other hand do affect the progress on the science work, some people tend to have strong faith that they were born naturally safe and cannot be infected with any kind of diseases, for instance currently the world is fighting the Corona virus, scientist have come up with ways of dealing with it and also documented for example in the year 2020, a team scientists in wrote about the Novel corona virus Pneumonia emergency Response Epidemiology. Also in the year 2019, The Author: The lancet infectious disease with the title Challenges of the Corona virus disease as part of many other documented evidence would help in curbing the virus.(Fotaki & Koning 2020). Epidemiology is a data-driven field that depends on a methodical and objective approach to data gathering, analysis, and interpretation. Basic epidemiologic methods rely on careful observation and the use of valid comparison groups to determine whether what was observed, such as the number of cases of disease in a specific area during a specific time period or the frequency of an exposure among diseased people, differs from what might be expected. Epidemiology, on the other hand, combines biologic, economic, social, and behavioral sciences with techniques from other scientific disciplines, such as biostatistics and informatics. Epidemiology is as well referred to as the fundamental science of public health, and with good cause. To begin with, epidemiology is a quantitative field that requires a solid understanding of probability, statistics, and good research techniques. Second, epidemiology is a technique of causal reasoning that involves generating and testing hypotheses to explain health-related behaviors, states, and occurrences based on scientific disciplines such as biology, behavioral sciences, physics, and ergonomics. Epidemiology, on the other hand, is more than simply a study activity; it is a basis for directing practical and appropriate public health action based on this science and causal reasoning. Scientist and spiritual thinkers tend to relate to the Epidemiology in the following ways as discusses: 1.) The spiritual thinkers would believe that it would be normal to lose one or two of their children to the disease, Scientist argue that this is not the case since it has improved on the standard of living and has also provided other ways of thinking about ourselves and families as well 2.) The spiritual thinkers rely mostly on theories of the past, they may believe that the pandemic will not reach them since their great grandfathers were not affected by it, scientist on the other hand would rely on the facts, the real world, what is happening now and look for ways to solve it at all cost as long as it worth live saving 3.) The spiritual thinkers will give evidence based on what was written in the past and will not agree on any other matter whatsoever, Science on the other hand is not the only way that of knowing and understanding but also a way of knowing that differs from other ways other than what was written or being documented. 4.) The spiritual thinkers sometimes could be the same scientist, meaning that they work together for the better future for instance a doctor who is a scientist treats a patient who is a spiritual thinker, and it’s not bad to believe in the healing power of God but also to undergo the necessary treatment process for the healing to take place.(Anna,et al 2020). The above selected arguments its validity and whether it could be reconciled is as the following discussion: 1.) The spiritual thinkers need to be taught about the importance of life and that all life matter to everyone. They should be informed of the new ways of dealing with the pandemic and also that they matter in the society since whatever happens to them will eventually affect the entire community 2.) It’s not bad to have some believe on the biblical theories of the past, that can be part of your history and will be respected, however things are changing and also the society is becoming dynamic, the spiritual believers should be informed of the other side of the world where new theories that are based on facts are being developed and be advised to follow with them for their own good. They should start by adding the new theories to what they believed in before and see the difference. 3.) Based on the past written information that spiritual thinkers tend to rely on, they can be advised on other ways of confirming whether it benefits them or not, their eyes should be opened up to the real world for them to make the necessary adjustments or changes for their future. 4.) The spiritual thinkers can be allowed to believe on whatever they want as long it will help them in the current world crisis, both the scientists and spiritual thinkers can work simultaneously for a common goal of safeguarding the society and the future as well. What is the relationship between the spiritual thinkers and the scienties? This question has so many answers depending on the group receiving it.One cannot believe on something that happens many year ago and also accepts the dynamics of today’sword, it’s not possible. In philosophy and theology, the connection between religion and science is still a point of contention. What is the degree to which religion and science are compatible? Are religious beliefs sometimes helpful to science, or do they always stand in the way of scientific inquiry? These and other issues are addressed by the multidisciplinary subject of science and religion, often known as theology and science. It investigates historical and current connections between various disciplines, as well as providing philosophical interpretations of how they interact. The important thing to note here is that spiritual thinkers lie beyond the scope of science. They do not ad will not conflict with science .In other words this two are totally independent. The bottom line is that the society has to choose which direction they want to follow, the preferred one will be that which will not cause any harm to other members of the society but help in improving their lives.
