Week 2 Research Notebook
Summary and Analysis Activity
Each week you will have an opportunity to practice different aspects of the research and writing process in a research notebook. It consists of a template you will fill out and submit in Canvas. In addition to introducing and practicing targeted components of the research and writing process, these notebooks will help you develop and practice the skills you will demonstrate on your other assignments.
This week, the research notebook focuses on summarizing and analyzing sources.
Review the following resources first:
·
Writing a Summary
·
Summary vs. Analysis
To summarize is to take ideas and present them again in a more concise way. But to analyze is to reach your own conclusions about how the elements of a topic, theory, issue, or story fit together to create something that may not be evident at first glance.
Your written assignment this week, the Source Critique Essay, asks you to engage with one source. Here, you’ll practice the different steps and stages to building a successful critique using summary and analysis.
STEP ONE: Writing a Summary
A summary is a short objective overview of the main ideas of a larger work. It includes only the broader points or purpose of a work rather than the details or smaller plot points. You can think of a summary as how you might boil down the main points of an article to describe it to other people.
Using the article that will be the focus for your Week 2 Written Assignment, restate the main idea of the article.
Click or tap here to enter text.
Now, break down the main points. Remember, these are just the main points that support the main idea, without any examples or evidence.

This roadmap will help you develop the required material for your Week2 Written Assignment. Remember that to write a summary, you should include all of the main points or ideas in the work but avoid smaller details or ideas. Your summary should be written using your own words and will present the main ideas objectively, avoiding your own opinion and thoughts about the work.
STEP TWO: Analyzing the Information
Analysis means breaking something down into its various elements and then asking critical thinking questions in order to reach some conclusions of your own. When asked to write an analysis, you must also add your own understanding of what you’ve discovered about your topic.
What’s your reaction to the information revealed in the article? Was it surprising, or did it align with your own previous understanding of the topic?
Click or tap here to enter text.
What information from the article do you think is the most important? Why?
Click or tap here to enter text.
STEP THREE: Pulling It Together
Your Week 2 Written Assignment will ask you to interpret the information from your article. This really means that you’ll comment on the usefulness of the article, and what it contributes to understanding the topic or issue.
Use this space to share your ideas about how this article contributes to your understanding of the importance of the overall topic you are exploring. Don’t worry about writing a formal paragraph. Just try to capture the ideas you will finalize and polish as you complete your Week 2 Written Assignment.

Sexual harassment elimination in the Army or Military

9 August 2021
Sexual assault and harassment are a concern in the armed forces and especially in the US. Yearly, thousands of service members are estimated to have encountered some form of sexual violence, e.g., rape, sexual assault, or harassment. Sexual assault has been widely reported in military contexts. The issue is prevalent, and the effect is inevitable. In 2004, a study by the Department of Defense Task Force on the care of the victims of sexual abuse offered suggestions for systemic improvements in the response of individuals living with sexual violence (Ayesha, 2021). Nevertheless, raising awareness and preventing sexual abuse remains a major issue for the Defense Department, the army, and the Army Materiel Command.
These suggestions included the development of a key accountability point and a unified response system. Furthermore, the legal obligation to engage in the military judicial system was shown to be an important impediment in reporting acts of sexual assault by service members. A commanding officer of a service member was informed to report a crime, and a formal inquiry was initiated. The DoD has made numerous improvements, and federal law has been enacted since that study to guarantee that victims get appropriate treatment. The proposals of this task force led to the new policy and the creation of the Pentagons Sexual Assault Preventive and Response Office, which would monitor all prevention and response operations related to sexual assaults. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has also introduced significant system improvements to help treat and benefit veterans seeking care with a history of wartime sexual trauma.
Military life and sexual assault experience offer distinct difficulties. Men and women who suffer sexual assault or harassment frequently live and work with the individual who has done this. When the perpetrator monitors or overshadows the victim, he may threaten his career or shut off assistance and support alternatives. Service members cannot leave a job due to a harsh working environment and may face penalties for not placing orders. Unit cohesiveness may make severing that connection difficult, unpleasant, and even dangerous for a victim by reporting abuse.
Some argue that the militarys culture has to reform to avoid sexual assaults and find that sexual harassment is frequent; unit cohesiveness may also contribute to pressures on reporting incidents of violence. Although there have been numerous improvements, others argue that the DoD has not done much to prevent and react to sexual assault (Suzanne, 2021). The following sections offer information on the extent of sexual assault both inside military and military service academies. There is also a section on the experience, symptoms, and treatment of the DDs military sexual trauma (MST).
In order to mitigate military harassment, several things have to be done. First, all the leadership should be held accountable, meaning despite the level as they are responsible for creating an ambiance encouraging these harassments. Additionally, by improving the reporting system. By having a single database maintain the reports relating to assaulter harassment. This makes it easier to separate other concerns from the serious ones
Change current legislation to prevent assault. Certain legislation should be examined to see if it really creates reporting obstacles or serves as a reversal against reporters. Enhance assistance for survivors. The medical treatment regimen may not be adequate, and individuals who are attacked may require long-term care that tackles psychological problems and other problems associated with military change. Enhance sexual assault prevention training skills. The training should concentrate on psychoeducation and risk reduction skills, with a particular emphasis on the underlying causes and cultural elements in the military.
