Unit 7 discussion responses - Law
1. Plagiarism is copying someone elses work or ideas without giving them credit and presenting it as if it was your own. Plagiarism is not appropriate because it can get a person into a lot of trouble and based on a persons moral, a person should have integrity. Although it is easy to plagiarize, in some cases it can be unintentionally which is the reason why it is important to obtain enough knowledge and have an understanding on how to avoid plagiarism. A student might plagiarize for many reasons but I think the major reason would be to obtain an excellent grade in the course. I believe that fear of failing can sometimes take over you especially with college courses which leads students to make poor decisions. To my understanding, Kean University kicks students out on the first attend to plagiarize. However, there are some professors that give students a second chance to redo the assignment. I believe that people deserve a second chance, I feel like consequences of plagarism should be a grade penalty and give that student the opportunity to redo the assignment and of course if it happens again, failing the course of facing disciplinary action should be taken into consideration. Plagiarism can be avoided in various ways. But my number one advise would be to cite your source. Although we put a statement or summarize an article in our own words, that knowledge came from someone else and it is not our words or ideas. Citing the source is a lot easier now with all the websites that can help us convert the article into whatever format is required such as APA, MLA,etc. Proofreading your work would also give the writer the opportunity to see where he/she is missing a citation. There are also websites that offer plagiarism checker which can be beneficial when writing a research paper. 2. Plagiarism is when someone takes concepts, or even exact phrasing and wording, and submits the piece of work as if it was their own. This is inappropriate because when submitting a paper, you are taking credit for your own ideas and work, and receiving a grade for it. Outside of school, you may even be submitting this work for your own merit and claiming that this literature is yours. This is a problem because the person who first released the work should be the one who receives the credit, and deserves to not have their work stolen. A student would probably plagiarize if they did not want to go through the effort of either citing the original source, or come up with their own ideas for a paper. It is an approach that cuts a lot of corners and tells professors that this student is dishonest and does not work for an honest grade. When considering the consequences of plagiarism, personally I think it should be taken seriously. I know some universities, if not most, will resort to expulsion for this. However, I wonder if it would be a better consequence to drop them from the class they plagiarized in, with the threat of expulsion if plagiarism were to occur again. The main issue is that once you know it happened once, you cannot really be entirely sure that it has not already happened, or will not happen again in the future. It is a complicated issue to create consequences for. Plagiarism can be avoided by making sure to properly cite each source that the student takes from, whether it is a reference or direct quote. In addition, submitting work through websites that have built in checkers for plagiarism can create more of a deterrent, although obviously it is sad that they are needed.  3. plagarism is the use of articles or information that someone else has attained, and trying to pass it off as your own work. This is a very serious problem when it comes to writing papers and doing rsearch because you are essentially stealing someones work, and trying to use it as your own words. It is inappropiate because you can get in serious trouble for it, and cause yourself to lose the grade you would have received. Students plagerize when they dont want to do the research themselves, and they want to get an easy grade on something. Some people go as far as posting stories and other statistics to these databases passing off someone elses work as their own to heighten their grade or staus. Consequences of plagarism should result in a failure of a grade, or depending on the situation being fired from a job if you are being paid to write these articles or use this information in any way. Ways to avoid this could be having to send your findings through a plagarism checker to make sure they are your own words, or if you must use other peoples work, make sure it is properly cited to avoid this problem.  4. Plagiarism is the point at which somebody takes ideas, or even definite stating and phrasing, and presents the piece of work as though it was their own. This is unseemly in light of the fact that while presenting a paper, you are assuming acknowledgment for your own thoughts and work, and getting a grade for it. Outside of school, you might even be presenting this work for your own legitimacy and guaranteeing that this writing is yours. This is an issue in light of the fact that the individual who initially delivered the work ought to be the person who gets the credit, and has the right to not have their work taken. An understudy would presumably copy on the off chance that they would not like to go through the work of either refering to the first source, or concoct their own thoughts for a paper. While thinking about the results of counterfeiting, by and by I figure it ought to be treated in a serious way. I know a few colleges, if not most, will fall back on ejection for this. Be that as it may, I keep thinking about whether it would be a superior outcome to drop them from the class they appropriated in, with the danger of ejection if literary theft somehow happened to happen once more. The primary issue is that once you realize it happened once, you cant actually be completely certain that it has not as of now occurred, or wont occur again later on. It is a convoluted issue to make ramifications for. Counterfeiting can be stayed away from by making a point to appropriately refer to each source that the understudy takes from, regardless of whether it is a reference or direct statement. 5. Plagiarism is simply defined as using some elses work or their ideas and passing them off as your own. Plagiarism is inappropriate because it is stealing credit from someone elses work. A student might plagiarize because they are late on submitting an assignment and they dont have enough time to complete the project. Sometimes plagiarism can be done on accident in the example of not properly citing a source. If a student is unsure how to properly quote another article and has done so unsuccessfully it can be taken as a form of plagiarism. Thats why it is so important to make sure you are using your citations properly. I feel the consequences for plagiarism should be a 0 on the assignment. If the assignment was not your own work then you should most definitely not receive credit for the work submitted. Although in some situations it is efficient to expelled the student who does this. In the situation of improper citations professors can work with students to explain how to properly cite and allow them the ability to resubmit the assignment. If for example a final research paper was copied entirely from another website a student would then fail the class and even risk being expelled. Which I feel is fair. The intention behind the plagiarism should always be taken into account. If a student intentionally copies someone elses work and tries to pass it off as their own then they should face expulsion. Plagiarism can be avoided by ensuring you are using your own work. Submission cites also allow you to double check all of your work. It will tell you what percentage of your work is your own and what percentage of work has been found on other cites. It can also be avoided by limiting the amount you research on the Internet and trying to focus purely on your own opinions.
