This process consists of a series of five steps, and can help to successfully resolve conflict. (Abigail & Cahn, 2011) The five steps are: the prelude to conflict, the triggering event, the initiation phase, the differentiation phase, and the resolution phase  using the book   Abigail, R. & Chan, D. (2011). Managing conflict through communication Feedback from Professor: Tara: I would like to give you the opportunity to rework this assignment.  I am not sure that this was completely understood.  The five stages of the constructive conflict process were not correctly identified.  Additionally, these were to be described and applied to an example of your own experience.  Connections to course material were to be included throughout.  Please contact me via email if you are interested in reworking this to the assignment requirements. You can resubmit this for up to full credit without penalty. If you have any questions, please let me know.  Week 1 assignment instructions: In Chapter 1 of the text,  Managing Conflict Through Communication , the five stages in a constructive conflict process are explained. Write a paper in which you identify a conflict that you or someone you know has had and has already been resolved. Identify and describe the five stages of a constructive conflict process. Then, apply each of the five stages of a constructive conflict process to your example. Your paper should clearly identify each stage and provide details or examples for each stage. You can review Examples 1 and 2, located in  Section 1.3  of the text, for ideas on how to organize this assignment. (see below) Example 1 · Prelude. For the first time in about two weeks, my dad, brother, and I were all in the same place at the same time. We went to dinner together, giving us our first chance in weeks to talk together. We had just ordered dinner when the inevitable question came up. What am I going to do after I graduate? When the question came up this time, I had an answer. I told my dad about the progress I had made in job contacts and other possibilities I was considering. I especially wanted to travel during the summer with a sports team as a sports information director, but I had made no specific plans. Pop asked if I had sent in my application yet. I said that I hadn’t. · Trigger. My older brother, Stuart, chimed in that I’d better do it soon. This is when the conflict started. The tone in Stuart’s voice was what set me off. He was using a condescending attitude toward me, which I hate. · Initiation. I told him that it was none of his business; that he need not tell me what to do. · Differentiation. Stuart got mad, as usual, and told me that I was interpreting the situation wrong. He basically told me that I shouldn’t feel the way I do because they were only showing that they care. This rubbed me the wrong way because I’ve had enough of people telling me how I should feel. I tried to explain how I felt but was interrupted several times with the response that I was wrong to feel that way. I told him that I thought I was being more than fair in telling my family my plans and feelings. · Resolution. At this point, my father intervened and made us both apologize to each other for making such a scene. We did and moved on to other topics that were safer to discuss. Example 2 · Prelude. Our daughter is not a morning person. My husband is one, but I am usually the one who drags her out of bed for school. The other morning I was having a hard time waking up, and I didn’t worry too much about it because my husband was up and I didn’t have to get up early. I finally got up just before my daughter had to leave. · Trigger. My husband remarked “I got Jenny up for you.” That really irritated me, because when he says that it sounds like taking care of our daughter is a favor he does me instead of an obligation we both have. · Initiation. I remarked that it really bothered me when he said that. · Differentiation. He said that he realized that it would be easier for all concerned if he got her up this morning. I said I didn’t like the way he said it. · Resolution. He apologized and said he didn’t mean it the way it sounded. He appreciated that I usually got her up. He was just trying to reassure me that I didn’t have to worry about getting Jenny to school. I told him I appreciated being reassured, but really needed to believe we were in this together. He agreed, and we dropped it. These are the five steps This process consists of a series of five steps, and can help to successfully resolve conflict. (Abigail & Cahn, 2011) The five steps are: the prelude to conflict, the triggering event, the initiation phase, the differentiation phase, and the resolution phase The book we are using is Managing Conflict Through Communication (Abigail & Cahn, 2011) STAGES OF CONSTRUCTIVE CONFLICT 1 Stages of Constructive Conflict Management Tara Thompson University of Arizona Professor: Janessa Gerling August 2, 2021 STAGES OF CONSTRUCTIVE CONFLICT 2 My husband works for the City in the Water Management department; hes responsible for connecting, disconnecting, and servicing water meters. He has call duty monthly, which consists of two other coworkers and a crew leader. There is always a conflict between the call duty team and the crew leaders regarding who receives a call, the order the work is distributed based on where the on-call person lives about the location that needs servicing. Last month the crew leader sent my husband on a call, he responded to the call; once he arrived at the site, he noticed that it was a two men job. He immediately contacted his crew leader asking for help; since the crew leader lived about thirty minutes away, he stated, Im not coming back out to assist anyone. My husband asked the crew leader if he could send another person out to assist; the crew leader responded, I dont have anyone else to send, my husband explained. This particular job would take longer, and I need safety reasons another man to assist. They ne ver agreed until my husband calls their supervisor. The supervisor, my husband, and the crew leader sat down and discussed the situation and realized it was a lack of communication. The crew leader wasnt listening; he was more adamant about not driving back; he never considered it a real safety issue at that time of night and the length of time it would take for one crew person to complete the job. Potential opposition or incompatibility The first stage in the conflict process describes the present opportunities or chances of a conflict (Van Bussel, 2015). When they arise, the cause for disputes is categorized into three categories: communications, structure, and personal variables. Communication, exchange of words, and communication that has noise are likely to start a conflict. The design, the degree of dependence among individuals, the style of leadership, and the reward system also cause conflicts; hence the size and the specialization cause conflict. Personal variables are individual attributes STAGES OF CONSTRUCTIVE CONFLICT 3 such as authoritative, which trigger conflicts easily. This scenario resulted in the two individuals responding to the call and the crew leader showing authority. They created noise, and the crew leader displayed control, not wanting to lose the argument, which further escalated the conflict and control. Cognition and personalization At this stage, both parties decide and come to realize the main reason behind their conflict. The involved parties at this stage are driven by their emotions in whatever they are doing and the conversation their having. In the scenario, the main reason for the conflict was getting mistreated and feeling unsafe, not providing the appropriate help, not being a team player, and not act ively listening. The crew leader was driven by emotions when he stated he would not come back to assist. Intentions They are the decisions to act in any given way to intervene in peoples emotions and actions of their behavior (Maltarich, 2018). They provide guidelines to people with conflict., an individuals intention is defined by the choice they make, which can also determine the dispute. The choice can change when in a match due to the reaction of emotions to the other partys behavior. The parties both changed their meaning because the feelings of the other triggered each individual. Behavior During this stage, it is when the conflict is visible to everyone around and themselves. The step comprises actions, statements, and reactions made by the individuals engaged in battle. The STAGES OF CONSTRUCTIVE CONFLICT 4 individuals, in this case, started exchanging words between themse lves which later resulted in an argument and misunderstanding. Their exchange of words and the demanding behavior was so heated that a clear understanding was never reached. Outcomes After any conflict, there are always consequences amongst th e conflicting parties. The conflict outcomes can be the ones that will build individuals or destroy the relationship permanently. After calming down the disagreement between the two parties, they talked, and the crew leader realized he was not actively listening. They forgave each other and vowed to work harmoniously without causing any conflict again. The outcome was forgiveness, and respect was gained. STAGES OF CONSTRUCTIVE CONFLICT 5 Reference Mark A.
