Running head: SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS 1 3 SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS The University of Arizona Global Campus 12 August 2021 Summary The article talks about how SHARP, a program within the army responsible for ending sexual assaults and harassment within the ranks, directs its efforts to prevent such behaviors from ever occurring. It further states that these prospects can be achieved by instilling and restoring trust, starting at the top-level (rank). By reinforcing values, culture, and unit cohesion, trust can be restored. Although measure the article highlights that will help address sexual assaults is providing support to the victims in various ways, including support with medical services or mental health. It also talks about how there are different services in place to assist victims and survivors, such as helplines and even the People First Task Force (Devon, 2021). There are several main points highlighted in the article; firstly, it stipulates how the Armys Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Program is Establishing a culture of preventive measures, knowledge, support, and trust by pushing for new reforms that are needed to eradicate harmful behaviors within the army. The program provides support for victims as well as holds the perpetrators accountable. It says that the only way that these behaviors can be permanently eradicated is if the army reinforces a culture of trust, good clause, and unity within the units. Lastly, it states that how the military aims to combine almost 15 separate rules and directives to address the matter. Once published, the new guideline shall offer SHARP personnel and leaders with a single rule to allow and enhance the mitigation and response to sexual misconduct across the whole force. SHARP directors also strive to centrally identify and oversee all SARCs and victim advocates (Devon, 2021). Analysis It is both refreshing and surprising to see the actions and practices that are being undertaken by the different programs within the military to address the issue of sexual assaults. The long-standing culture within the army, especially when it involves seniors assaulting juniors as always been to cover up and thus making the likelihood of reporting very rare. Most high ranking officers are not charged when accused due to their position. So the article provided a new light on how the SHARP program is working towards eradicating such cultures and advocating more for victims. The most critical information within the article is the improvements being made by SHARP to address the issue. One of the main improvements in their policies includes providing unlimited reporting resources for people and the services for SARC and victim advocacy. Additionally, it stipulated that during investigative, litigation and recovery procedure, citizens and their dependents shall also have access to advocate services. This is very important as it encourages more people to report such acts when they occur, knowing they will be properly advocated for. It also holds the perpetrators accountable. To summarize, this article has provided me with more knowledge on the issue of sexual assault within the army, although I knew it was a problem, I had no idea how big the issue was and how policies play a significant role in how these behaviors are death with. In other words, stricter policies are the best in situations like these. They enable survivors /victims to feel more comfortable coming out and telling their stories, thus holding their assaulters accountable. REFERENCES Devon L. Suits. (2021, 2 April). It consists of a template you will fill out and submit in Canvas. In addition to introducing and practicing targeted components of the research and writing process, these notebooks will help you develop and practice the skills you will demonstrate on your other assignments. This week, the writing notebook focuses on integrating research into your own writing. Review the following resources first: · Integrating Research (with video) · Quoting, Paraphrasing, & Summarizing (summarizing) As you write, you are sharing your opinion, but you also need to support the ideas in your writing with evidence. Think about an argument you’ve had with a friend or family member—nothing major, just a disagreement over something, such as who is the greatest professional baseball player, or which movie is the best, or even which is the best taco shop. Arguments like this are largely opinion, but you can use evidence to support the argument for one side or another. You should first create your argument (or as much of it as you can) and then share the evidence you find in places that support the points you are making. STEP ONE: Supporting Your Thesis Statement Here’s an example using the topic from the Week 1 Research Notebook to show how you get started integrating your research into your writing: Article Title: Online, Blended and Technology-Enhanced Learning: Tools to Facilitate Community College Student Success in the Digitally-Driven Workplace. Thesis Statement: A significant benefit of distance education is the preparation needed to work online developed skills students will need in the workplace. So, take a look at the article you chose to write about and the thesis statement you have created for your outline. Use these to fill in the sections below: Article Title This is the article you used in for your Week 2 Assignment. Click or tap here to enter text. Thesis Statement This might change as you write and that’s ok, you just need something to help keep your essay focused. Click or tap here to enter text. STEP TWO: Finding Evidence You have the opportunity to use this article as one of your sources for your Week 5 Final Paper, so it’s worth taking a look at to see what evidence is in there. Here’s an example: Source 1: (List source here) Levy, D. (2017). ENG122 Week 4 Research Notebook 2 Outlining The Research Analysis The University of Arizona Global Campus ENG122 10 August 2021 Introduction Its astonishing and a matter of concern that sexual harassment has found its root in the military and at an alarming rate. A study conducted in 2018 found out that 20500 cases were reported relating to military service members being sexually assaulted or raped, and this statistic indicated that more than 13000 military women were victimized. Unfortunately, the vast majority of harassment in the military ends up unreported. Additionally, the retaliation is pervasive, with more than three-quarters of the cases reported alleged that the retaliators were in the reporter’s command chain (Times Up 2021). Harassment in the military should be a concern to national security, considering that more than 1 in four service members who survived an assault or harassment end up leaving the force, undermining the military force readiness. As a result, the essence of this essay is to have a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of sexual-related harassment in military staffs by trying to understand if the impacts are the same in both male and female gender. The article of choice for exploration is Magley et al. (1999) “The impact of sexual harassment on military personnel: Is it the same for men and women.” Civil workplace research recognized the severe psychological, health associated, and job correlated consequences of voluptuous harassment to females. The issue of whether males are similarly harassed has been raised more lately, leading to a significant discussion not just about the prevalence of these encounters nevertheless the gender of the perpetrator. This research compares the results of sexual harassment for males and females using data from the latest gender survey of the United States Department of Defense (Magley et al., 1999). The findings from both linear as well as quadratic regression analyzes show that, in 3 outcomes: psychological, health, s well as job-related, harassment has an equally detrimental impact on men and women. There were nevertheless three discrepancies that suggested distinct experiences for both genders of sexual harassment. Foremost, females were more susceptible to sexual harassment than males. Secondly, women reported greater rates of sexual harassment than males; thus, the detrimental effect on women as a group is much more severe. Finally, women have nearly always been sexually harassed by males; men are slightly more likely than women to encounter such actions by men. The gender surveys extensive study of the effect of sexual harassment on military members was a significant breakthrough. The study was based on the methodological enhancement of sexual harassment evaluation and on comprehensive theoretical notions of the consequences of sexual harassment, which possibly led to the largest theoretical evaluation of sexual harassment. Given the increased knowledge of the frequency of military sexual harassment and the possible harmful impacts of these encounters, the issue of the repercussions of these events on both men and women military members is appropriate. Furthermore, concerns were raised concerning the frequency of same-sex harassment by adopting a Dont ask, dont tell policy on gays and lesbian military staff. The article thus is an important source of data that explains the reason military individuals opt to leave the service after they survive harassment while in service. This is because the majority gets disturbed, especially psychologically, which affects their general work output and general interactions, especially if the perpetrator was a highly valued colleague or a high chain of command. Thus, they opt to leave the service rather than seeing and meeting their offender regularly as they partake in their job, which leads to psychological and mental torture. Conclusion. From the article, its evident that contrary to many individuals’ assumptions, harassment in the military occurs to both men and women. However, the most affected individuals are the female counterparts. Sexual harassment outcomes affect both men and women psychologically, their health as well as job-related endeavors. Additionally, most harassment perpetrators are higher individuals in the chain of command. Additionally, one in every four individuals in the military that survive harassment end up leaving the force, which leads to concerns in national security. Furthermore, stereotypes have been created with the military following the notion of the Dont ask, don’t tell policy on gays and lesbians, increasing the incidence of same-sex harassment within the military.
