SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW.pdf SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW The social determinants of health can impact almost any area of Environmental Public Health (EPH) practice. Determinants such as geographic location, socioeconomic status, education and literacy, mental health, language, and culture, can create barriers to compliance and lead to health inequities. Difference in cultural/subcultural beliefs and values can also impede compliance. It is therefore imperative that Environmental Health Officers recognize and understand cultural differences and the context in which they operate to ensure public health and safety. For this assignment, each student will choose a topic that examines a barrier to compliance and pose a research question. Drawing on a number of peer reviewed journal articles and reports (including government, if relevant), you will present a concise, comprehensive, and up-to-date answer to that question in a systematic literature review. OBJECTIVE AND DEMONSTRATED LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this assignment, students will be able to: • Extract meaningful information from scientific literature • Recognize and synthesize major research findings, conclusions, and limitations • Critically analyze the approaches (methods) and findings (results) of scientific research • Compose a literature review having organized information in a logical and concise manner • Cite and organize references in a correct and consistent fashion, using the APA style guide Each student must include a minimum of ten sources for their review. Two of these can be specifically for adding context (i.e. including credible media source for your review’s Introduction). You will submit all source/research materials with your final document in order to obtain a final grade for this assignment. REVIEW REQUIREMENTS General Criteria: Overall, your target audience will find the review highly educational. The review will show your understanding of the complexities of the issue. Your literature review will: • Explain the context/controversy of the issue • Succinctly state what research has been done on the topic and the current thinking on the subject matter (not source by source, but in collaboration) • Pose a clear and succinct research question (that has come out of your chosen context) that is consistent throughout your document (i.e., details the results/findings specific to your question) • Present your findings using the APA style guide • Offer a concise conclusion • Present recommendations that demonstrate a strong critical analysis on where future research on the issue should head Your literature review will include all appropriate sections, including: • Abstract • Introduction • Methods • Results • Discussion o Limitations • Conclusion/Recommendations You will also have relevant headings for each major section of the review as well as descriptive/informative subheadings (when/where applicable). The style of your paper will meet professional standards and be appropriate for your audience. It will: • be written in well-structured paragraphs • have clear, correct, and concise sentences • use consistent “person” and “voice” • have precise word choice • use punctuation correctly and be grammatically correct In summary, you will demonstrate a solid understanding of the tenets of technical writing throughout your document.
