Portfolio - Business & Finance
In a 4 – 6 page paper based on your internship course experience and the learning objectives achieved during the course, review your internship experience successes and challenges leading to growth. You should demonstrate in your paper a description of your professional portfolio and include any evidence of accomplishment and skill development or recognition that you have acquired this session and how it will contribute to your portfolio.
Provide at least two (2) peer-reviewed sources. If you have completed this CLA2 assignment in an internship course prior to this class, select new examples and sources to support your response. For questions, contact your instructor.
The concepts of business and management have the potential to advance my career in
the industry. Coming from technical background and engineering, the business courses are
particularly interesting to see what happens in the financial cycle of the business. Significantly
five weeks of observations, experience, internship, and business course concepts offer
evidence-based and real-world evaluation of my professional career that leverages my
decision-making and further actions towards career development and work performance. In
these 8 weeks of taking Marketing management, I had learned briefly about how the market
segmentation happens and what factors need to be considered while launching a product, how
long the product will last in the market based on the changing trends in the consumer behavior.
In the first few weeks of Marketing management, I was introduced to the basic
terminology and how the marketing concepts support the external and internal operations of the
business decisions and how marketing plays into the overall dynamics of a companys vision
and how the product we make in our company are emphasized in the marketing for gaining the
market which would help me in future career prospects or start my own business. Coming to
journaling, I was able to keep track of my progress especially on my communication skills and
my goals and objectives. I recently moved on to a new position of Validation engineer which is in
the same industry but slightly different responsibilities. As a part of the job, I have to take
responsibility for the concerned project and coordinate with external manufacturers to make
sure the design details are followed through and through. This inevitably needs a lot of
communication exchange between different teams in both companies. I took a more realistic
approach of breaking down the project requirements into segments and assigning each of them
to resource deliverables. Breaking down the requirements provides clear instruction and
deliverables to each resource and helps in streamlining the objectives and better traceability for
the project. This is a really significant improvement in the existing approach as we were able to
cut short the meeting times by half and reduce the need for unscheduled meetings. The meeting
notes includes what was done so far, what the final requirements are and finally including the
holding items for each task so they were being accounted for when assigning the next tasks.
Another item from my journal entries was goal tracking. I am set to achieve certain goals
by the end of this year. One of them is to learn new skills that would help me propel in my career
and at the same time help me with my current position. I’m currently preparing for ASQ
certification which requires learning statistical techniques intended to make informed decisions
to assure the confidence and quality in the product. Every week I set a tracker to maintain my
progress of what I have learned and plan ahead for the remaining modules. The journaling
proved successful in tracking my goals and my progression which really gave me some
confidence in planning the activities both personally and professionally. I tried Triad Journaling
this time around for helping with the business classes. It involves writing 3 weekly reflections
focusing on ideas , questions, thoughts and experiences from the classroom (Silva, 2003). It;s a
interpretative self observation technique of recording and sharing our own experiences in a
professional set up. As Evers puts it, it’s important to date the journal entry and second being no
rules after the first one (Evers, 2008). The time stamp not only gives the content of the entry but
it registers the emotional quotient that led to it. This made it easier for me to journal as there
are no rules and constructs around what to include in the journal and being creative in the
entries gave me more freedom to structure the entries more creatively. This sparked a little more
enthusiasm to write something in a bit of a creative way conveying the simple thought and
helped me push through these 8 weeks.
Coming to learning new things this semester which was a long term goal I set myself in
the last semester and is still ongoing. So far I was able to learn Solidworks which is more on the
technical side to assist me with the design components. Taking the Marketing class this session
has opened up new avenues for me how the products we make are being sold and how they
are being differentiated from the competitors. This is an entirely different arena that happens in
the background which I never really concerned about. But now that view has changed for me.
Marketing plays a crucial role in any business, big or small. The current industry and the
products we make are pretty competitive and marketing can be challenging to make our
products stand out from the competition. One of the many concepts we learned in the course is
the use of 4P’s which refers to product, place, price and promotion. Coming to the promotion
part, our main customers are physicians. So we have to take their feedback when developing
the product. The way we promote is using legacy names for the products and bundling them
that complement each other in functionality and giving demos in the symposiums and putting
customers feedback on the performance of the product on our website.
Accomplishments
There are not many significant accomplishments this semester as the product line was
relatively new and it’s still in its infancy. But I was recognized and rewarded for my work on
deploying a production line to Mexico and China and working tirelessly with those sites to make
it successful. My director in a site visit mentioned that I have the potential to propel faster in the
company which he normally won’t be convinced by ordinary work. I take it as an absolute
achievement.
Overall this was great 8 weeks into the course and I learned something new and
significant that helps me in my profession or starting my own business. This innovative
strategies in the marketing and business concepts brings me one step closer to goal to be a
sensible decision driven and creative entrepreneur.
