Industry Report - Marketing
I need assistance in writing an industry report. Industry Analytical Report Assignment Analytical Report A common document in the business world is a report. There are two basic types, the informational report and the analytical report. The informational report presents data without analysis or recommendation. The analytical report provides data, analyses, conclusions and if requested, recommendations. We have already gone over some types reports in class. For this assignment, read over Chapter 9 “Informal Reports” provided as a pdf in this module. You will create an analytical report on an industry that interests you. To emulate “real world” scenarios, and to allow you to integrate your academic or career goals, you may pick a field you intend to enter, or a field you would like to examine. Sign up for your topic on the Collaborations spreadsheet located in the Canvas course. The topic you select can be your academic major, your career field, or your personal area of interest. Select an area that will align with your business and/or professional goals, if possible. You will research the industry, write an analytical report, and then discuss the report with the class. Assignment You are to act as a business analyst and you are writing a report on the current state of affairs about this industry. Imagine you have a client who wishes to invest his or her life savings in this business. He/she wants to know if it is a viable enterprise, and he/she engages your assistance to report on the industry. You are to provide data that shows current performance, industry outlook, products and services, major markets, success factors and barriers to entry. You will analyze the pros and cons, and offer conclusions and/or recommendations at the end. You are not arguing for or against his investment, per se, but you will research and report on the industry to prepare him to make informed decisions. Your conclusions or recommendations would therefore be based upon what you uncover in your research about the viability of the enterprise. IbisWorld will provide you with an excellent overall report if your area is well-defined, as with a NAIC code. Start there. You should then add sources from your particular industry. It is fine to include industry association figures; but also include a few peer-reviewed journals about your industry. You must locate the business in NW Florida (you may pick the county/city) and add the necessary demographic information and local competition. You should locate statistics and data from reputable sources to construct an unbiased report, in which you refrain from expressing your own values and beliefs, but instead offer objective comments based on the research. Stages & Submissions The project will be done in stages. The specific dates and times will be listed in Canvas for the various stages. 1. Topics chosen: Week 2 & 3 (Sign up on Collaboration). Sample reports will be shown in class; topics will be selected. Get your field approved before beginning. Try to select a field broad enough for NAIC code or similar assigned industry designation. 2. Research on your topic begins as soon as you select your industry. Plan to use quality sources including Ibis World, peer-reviewed journals, and quality data sources. This is not a project for basic Internet searches or Wikipedia (although Wikipedia is a good place to start if you want to check their sources). 3. Rough Draft Due: Week 6 (Oct 1): You must submit your Industry Report Rough Draft in Canvas. Don’t be late. We go right into workshop and if you are late, Canvas will not assign you peer reviews. You will miss both sets of points. 4. Rewrite your rough draft: Week 7. Based on peer review you will rewrite your report. 5. Industry Report Due Mid-Week 8: Industry Report—last day to submit Oct 14. You might want to submit a copy one day before this date to allow yourself time to resolve technical difficulties. You may submit up to 3 submissions, so submit a draft early just to be safe, and then submit edits if needed. Format: Prepare in Letter format, using the Indirect Approach. Refer to Chapter 9 of your textbook (pdf form is available on Canvas). See pages 248 For Direct vs Indirect Strategy, and pages 248-250 for directions for the Letter format. Spacing/Margins/Font: 1-inch margins (top, bottom, right, left), single-spacing body and double-spacing between paragraphs/sections/headings. Font should be Calibri or Times New Roman, size 11 or 12. See the Tips for Letter Reports on page 250. Length: 800 word minimum of the content (the To, From, Date, Subject lines and the Reference page(s) are not counted toward your 800 word minimum requirement). Maximum word count is 1500. Sources: Your sources must be industry databases, Ibis World, reputable demographic sources, and articles or materials found in the library databases (at least one or more scholarly [peer-reviewed] journal articles). Stay away from blogs, Wikipedia, and encyclopedias unless you have a compelling reason to use them. Use of .com sources is allowed, but not for general information as they may be biased; an exception would be fully cited industry-specific surveys or independent research conducted by the industry. See Paul Williford in the library if you need help finding sources. Sources must be cited within your report (APA style), and you must include a reference page in APA format. Organization of your report: There are many samples of Letter reports in Chapter 9. Some styles will overlap. So, depending your topic, you will have headings appropriate to your area. The basic organization should include: A Greeting/situational introduction that summarizes the “event” · Formal Introduction: One well-developed paragraph that includes definition, background and general explanation about the industry. Here, you will not reveal your recommendations. You will offer purpose of the report and method of data collection. · Data and Research: This section will be the longest section of your report and will consist of multiple paragraphs. These paragraphs may be constructed under sub headings that combine function and description. · Because you are discussing the research, you must use parenthetical citations throughout every paragraph and you should paraphrase as necessary. You may use charts or illustrations sparingly. Footnotes may be included only if there is a necessary reason for the notation. (Chapter 9, pdf: Figure 9.5 on page 258 will give you some tips on including citations in APA style in your report). · The information you are presenting must be from credible sources, but the writing of that information must be in your own words. Proper citation technique is important in a research report. All of this section will be evidence (your sources paraphrased). Refrain from using too many lists or anything else that avoids your original writing or is a waste of space—you need full paragraphs and complete sentences. Use third person and avoid use of first and second person in Discussion and Research portion. · Discussion/Analysis Remaining impartial in your report does not mean that you cannot discuss the pros and cons, concerns, problems or opportunities you have discovered. Revealing such findings can prompt the discussion/analysis. For example, if your research reveals that opening a rock-climbing business in Destin may be hampered by the fact that tourists rank “the beach” as the number one activity while on vacation, you should make that observation. Or, if your industry is particularly price-sensitive, you should state that success may depend upon proper product/service pricing. Think in terms of qualifiers. The data suggests success may be possible, provided X, Y and Z are addressed; or this industry depends heavily on X and Y therefore possible supply chain interruption of X and Y must be considered, etc. · Conclusion: You are summarizing your research. You may use a bulleted list to present your ideas as long as you present the list within a paragraph, complete with introductory and concluding statements “sandwiching” the list. · Note: Your report will go through Turnitin. This software flags phrase or sentence that are not original. REVIEWER SCORE 1.
