The way he narrates events showcases his moral status, purposing to keep a rescued disjoint of events and reliability. He effectively engages the empathetic nature of the reader hence curbing any form of single preconceptions. The Great Gatsby’s narrative scheme commences with a young narrator who, through his aimlessness, decides to embark on a journey that shows the fundamental truths of human conditions. In this novel, Caraway seems fretful at the moral confinements linked to his father’s advice. In doing so, he acts as the moral guidance of the novel. Nick Carraway's development in the narrative shows that he has many attributes that others lack since he is the right choice as the narrator due to his temperament, his moral guidance, and his behavior throughout the novel. Nick is the best choice as a narrator due to his temperament. As he clearly shows in Chapter 1, he is open-minded, tolerant, and a good listener. For this reason, others confide in him and tell him their hidden secrets. For instance; a random man confides in him and asks him for directions to West Egg village. He asked him helplessly that “How do you Get to Wes Egg Village” (Fitzgerald, 4)? In particular, Gatsby trusted him and classified him as his confidant (Fitzgerald). In the novel, Carraway generally assumes a secondary responsibility preferring to comment and describe events instead of dominating the action. Mostly, he acts as Fitzgerald’s voice, as shown by his extended meditation on the American dream and time as the culmination of chapter 9 of the Novel. The moral guidance of the novel rests on the shoulders of Carraway. During the first few scenes of the book, his judgments and gestures mark him as an individual of moral integrity. For instance, he indicates that. He also exhibits misanthropic notions implying that he is highly controlled by Fitzgerald’s moral vacuum perceived to have embodied American values. For instance, when he returned from the East, he focused on unifying the world and has moral amnion forever. In this case, his journey towards the East opens his eye to the carelessness of the wealthy. He sees the neglect of the Gatsby's unrealistic splendor and the less caring nature of the Buchanan. For this reason, such issues disapprovingly align with the social stratification prevalent in New York. He also mentions, “Only Gatsby, the man that gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction” (Fitzgerald, 1).In this statement, Nick indicates to the reader that everyone will earn his unaffected scorn except Gatsby. Although this does not affect the story's plot, it is an excellent hint to the reader to be suspicious of everyone apart from Gatsby. Although he has a significant role in the novel, his behavior shows a mixed reaction to Life, especially when they visited the East Coast. It embellishes an internal conflict that he fails to solve until the culmination of the novel (Maharani, 45).On the contrary, he is also attracted to the fun-driven and fast-paced lifestyle of New York. He indicates, “I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer” (Fitzgerald, 4).In other words, this shows that he was getting embroiled in the fun and entertainment prevalent in his new found home. Yet, he finds it damaging and grotesque. In conclusion, Nick Carraway's character in the narrative shows that he has many attributes that others lack since his integrity and capacity to determine right and wrong assists in leveraging him above the rest. The way he explains events in the story showcases his moral guidance and his ability to weave a disjointed society together.
