Döring, N. (2020). How is the COVID-19 pandemic affecting our sexualities? An overview of the current media narratives and research hypotheses. Archives of sexual behavior, 49(8), 2765-2778.
This article addresses how the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has affected our sexuality by reviewing the influences that have been mentioned in different media platforms and academic literature. This study focuses on four major themes: solo sex, partnered sex, sexual and reproductive health issues in vulnerable groups, and sexual and reproductive healthcare and sexual education. For partnered sex, it was established that couples had more relationship sex. Many children were born during the pandemic because of fewer distractions, availability, and the assumption of no possibility of coronavirus transmission between couples living together. However, other couples have experienced the reverse where they have experienced less sex and high divorce rates triggered by increased stress, job losses, home office duties, homeschooling, etc. It also suffices to say that based on the conducted research by the authors, some people have been shown to experience less casual sex because of the measures put in place to prevent the further spread of the virus. For solo sex, there has been an increase in masturbation, toy use, and pornography use because of people’s isolation during the pandemic. For the third theme, the pandemic has had adverse effects on reproductive and sexual health in terms of higher social and health inequalities. This especially applies to the vulnerable groups such as the LGBTQ, adolescents, etc., who are more likely to go through domestic violence and poorer medical care, including more restrictions to family planning and abortion access. The authors particularly stress the importance of sexual education in all facets to better handle sexual issues during the pandemic, such as coping with domestic isolation as a couple. The main limitation was the use of only English and German media contributions and academic literature. However, this article is an excellent reflection of what we are all experiencing worldwide in the face of the pandemic. Researchers can further this knowledge by providing recommendations on tackling the negative effects of Covid-19 in terms of human sexuality. It incorporates the most recent research to add to its context.
Frank, K. (2019). Rethinking risk, culture, and intervention in collective sex environments. Archives of Sexual Behavior, 48(1), 3-30.
This article dives into existing studies on environments where individuals meet for sexual activities, such as parks and sex clubs, to investigate the risk of HIV or STIs as well as collective sexual behavior. The authors purpose to analyze how collective sex has been investigated to promote more debates and propose new areas of interest. The sex location is crucial in this study to remedy the generalizing sexual risk-taking behavior models and to provide the knowledge embedded in the distinctiveness of the surrounding and its users. This article identifies some similarities in the social and spatial organization of collective sex environments. It has also helped in the understanding of various interventions in such environments. For instance, the authors emphasize the need to increase safe sexual behavior or negotiation of consent in sexual activities. This article has a limitation of theoretical restriction by using specific risk groups and environmental settings, overestimating the uniqueness of sexual enclaves and of the difference between a certain enclave and the wider social context. This study is relevant in our lives today because people often engage in risky sexual encounters in such environments, and some interventions should be implemented to prevent any negative effects. It is impossible to escape such locations because people derive pleasure from them, and with such an understanding, future researchers can explore various ways to reduce HIV and STI risks.
Grubbs, J. B., Wright, P. J., Braden, A. L., Wilt, J. A., & Kraus, S. W. (2019). Internet pornography use and sexual motivation: A systematic review and integration. Annals of the International Communication Association, 43(2), 117-155.
Pornography tends to be a common activity in the developed countries. The primary focus is on the research with regards to pornography use into an organizational structure meaningful to sexual motivation in a broad manner. To achieve this, the authors conducted a comprehensive review of research to examine personality, emotional as well as attitudinal associates and predictors of usage of pornography. From a thorough review, the current work demonstrates the fact that pornography is mainly consumed for pleasure. This tends to be associated with the increase in casual or impersonal approaches to sexuality. In addition to that, it tends to predict more approaches actually concerned with pleasure regarding sexual behavior. This study is also relevant in our lives today because pornography has been widespread for quite a long time. Pornography is one of the ways in which the media influences people’s sexuality, and there should be rules and interventions to guide its use.
Zikarge, T. H. (2019). Adolescents Exposure to Global Mass Media: Influences on Sexual Behavior and Sexuality in Hawassa City, Ethiopia.
This article focuses on dealing with the problematic sexual behavior of the youth influenced by uncontrolled media influence. The study uses a cross-sectional survey design to gain information about the current situation associated with the matter under study. This article establishes that many adolescents have had exposure to sexual messages and images on TV that are often displayed in a positive light in the media without giving a thought to the potential adverse risks and consequences. This study shows that adolescents spent an average of 3 to 4 hours of the day utilizing the media especially visiting websites and watching television. Even though these media channels provide information and entertainment, they mostly breed negative effects through media’s sexual content and aggression. This study is significant in our society, especially during the pandemic where there is restricted movement, and people are constantly on their gadgets and are often tempted to watch sexual content. With the recommendations provided in the article, the media can control its information to be more adolescent-friendly, and our youth can undertake literacy programs to be more sexually responsible.
Xu, Y., Norton, S., & Rahman, Q. (2018). Early life conditions, reproductive and sexuality-related life-history outcomes among human males: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Evolution and Human Behavior, 39(1), 40-51.
This article addresses the relationship between early-life situations and the reproductive and sexuality-related outcomes among men. The study involves a thorough review of198 articles. The study findings demonstrate a relationship between low family SES and early sexual start, early marriage, and early first birth. However, there lacks a strong link between family SES and timing of puberty or the number of sexual partners. Additionally, there is a positive correlation between parental absence and early start of sexual activities, early marriage, and early first birth. However, parental absence has no substantial relationship with the delayed timing of puberty. On the other hand, small body size has a relationship with delayed timing of puberty but lacks an association with the number of offspring and adult body size. Additionally, there is a strong link between non-heterosexual orientation and small body size, more siblings, and having older parents. All these factors help in comprehending the human male reproductive and outcomes related to their sexuality. This study is relevant in explaining how a man’s life history influences his present and future sexuality. This study can help propose various recommendations to improve people’s wellbeing and sexuality, such as advocating for more parental involvement to reduce early marriages. I hope that other researchers can use this knowledge as a foundation for further research on how to improve human sexuality.
Petrychyn, J. (2021). Masturbating to remain (close to) the same: sexually explicit media as habitual media. Leisure Sciences, 43(1-2), 138-142.
This article explores the prevalence of sexually explicit media and other types of digitally mediated sex during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The authors particularly draw on the research by Wendy Chun on habitual new media to help explain why people have resulted to using the media for sex and leisure. The authors argue that sexual content from the media become a norm in the middle of a pandemic because it assists in generating sense of closeness and sameness in the midst of isolation. This implies that people are using masturbation to maintain closeness to others and to themselves. This study is relevant today, and it is applicable to any other future pandemic that may lead to the confinement of people in their homes. Particularly in the early phases of the pandemic, people were afraid to interact and only relied on the media to maintain social interactions. That steered the use of sexual content portrayed by the media to pleasure themselves. This is alarming, and the media stations should come up with ways to moderate their content.
