SYMBOLIC SPEECH PREPARATION OUTLINE Title: “Becoming a Sister” Statement of Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about how my life has changed with becoming a big sister Central Idea: My sister and I have made many memories with each other and she has impacted my life in several ways. Introduction I. Attention: What would you think if your mom always said she would not have another child and then one day, at Blue Coast, she tells you that you have a little brother or sister on the way? You’d laugh, right? Ok, well maybe not. But that was my reaction. II. Topic Statement: I was scared to death of becoming a big sister. The only experience with siblings I had ever had was with my aunt and uncle, who would pick on me relentlessly. I wondered if I would be this pesky big sister, or if I would be more than that. III. Credibility: After six years of being a big sister, I have not only mastered the art of being pesky, but I believe I have been a good influence in my sister’s life. IV. Preview: Today, I’d like to focus on her birth, all the memories we have made, and what our future together may hold. (Transition: First, I would like to discuss the day she was born.) Body I. The birth of my sister was a 24-hour event. A. My father woke up before the sun had risen on October 26, 2006. 1. After dropping me off at the grandparents, my parents headed to the hospital. 2. I had breakfast with my grandmother and soon-to-be aunt at Cracker Barrel- peach pancakes. 3. Mom walked the halls of the hospital. B. My grandparents and I arrived at the hospital about midday. 1. I sampled everything in the hospital cafeteria: cookies, sandwiches, and even chocolate milk. 2. At about 11:00, I fell asleep in the lobby, where the security guard placed a pillow under my head and a blanket over me. 3. I woke up and went upstairs, where my family wrote down bets on Brylee’s weight and length. I bet that she would weight 7 lbs, 11 oz- exactly one more pound than me. 4. Brylee Grace Sneed was born at 1:39 a.m. She weighed 7 lbs, 11 oz. 5. I got to press the button that played music whenever a baby was born. (Transition: I have spoken so far about the birth of my sister, but it was the next few years to come that make her so special to me.) II. My sister and I have been able to share many memories over the past six years. A. I got to see her take her first steps. B. I picked up her little hand to put it in her smash cake on her first birthday. She replied with a screech. C. We got to go to the beach together, where we first discovered her hate for sand. D. I learned to drive with a screaming two year old in the backseat. E. We lost our first dog to cancer when she was three. F. She got her first puppy that same year. I am getting to see her grow up with her dog, just as I grew up with mine. G. I saw her graduate from preschool; she saw me graduate from high school. H. I was there for her first stomach virus, which happened to hit while we are on a trip in Chattanooga. I. I got a shot before she had to get hers to show her it didn’t hurt. This is a complicated task for someone who used to be terrified of needles. (Transition: We have shared so many memories, but I look forward to what the future holds for us.) III. I look forward to seeing her accomplish all that I have accomplished and more. A. She already comes to me with questions about Jesus, her kindergarten boyfriend, and what she should wear for gym class tomorrow. B. I look forward to her growing up and seeing her become a leader, a best friend, a responsible daughter, a loving granddaughter, and a passionate student. C. I know her strong-will will enable to reach her fullest potential, and I am so excited to be able to watch and guide her in doing so. (Transition: In review …) Conclusion I. Summary: Today, I’ve shared with you my love for my sister. II. Close: There is only way I know to sum up what being a sister means to me: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If one falls down, one can help the other up…”–Ecclesiastes 49: 9-10. to me its unforgetting life moment. Anyway so, when I first moved from Egypt to united stated of America to achieve the American dream as many immigrants dreaming for a better life opportunity, freedoms and good environment. I were 18 years old at that time when I got accepted to immigration lottery of USA. Of course, it’s not an essay process to come to America you have to do a lot of health checkup and you have to know someone that lives here and provide that information to the immigration and customs enforcement so, they make sure you won’t end up in the street after you get to USA. So, immediately got in contact to my childhood friend that moved here 5 years before me to get his parent’s permission for me to waited me at the airport and let me stay at their house till I find a job and they agreed. But, to my luck I moved in 2009 back when the economic was collapsed with just six hundred dollars in my pocket. It was so hard and difficult at that time to find a job. Ended staying at my friend parent’s house for a month close to completely run out of money and I can see it in their eyes that they don’t want me anymore in their house and I can hear them gossiping about me to leave that felt like a heavy rock on my chest not knowing what to do. The next morning, I walked about 6 miles to the Egyptian church that they took me their couple of time hoping to talk to the priest explaining my situation to him and he agreed for me to stay in the church’s event room. Couple of days latter he found me a job at opry mills mall. I was the happiest I’ve been. I ended up working there for about a year before the 2010 flood that destroyed the mall causing it to shut down and I got a laid off from work but didn’t care that much at that time because within the time period I worked there at the opry mills mall I saved up enough money to get me a cheap car and I was staying with Roommate that I meet at worked with. Not much latter a found another job at Tyson chicken in Shelbyville. While I was working there, I wanted to continue my education so, I ended up going to adult high school because there was no high school going to accept you at the age of 19 to get my high school diploma and graduated from there. My ambition was to get into medical school to become a nurse with no help from finical aid I had to work a lot to save up money and here I’m at MTSU on my second semester to continue my journey towards my dream.
